Ireland: Malting barley growers to resume contract talks with Boortmalt post-harvest
This year’s malting barley negotiations took place against a very difficult backdrop, Noel Delany, Irish Farmers' Association (IFA) grain chairman, was quoted as saying by Meat Trade News Daily on September, 30.
"Significant progress has been made with Boortmalt agreeing to purchase close on 50pc more than the contracted tonnage at full premium," Mr. Delany said, reminding that former Greencore Malt management cut contract tonnage by one-third and the number of suppliers by close to 50pc.
"Talks are to resume post-harvest to examine how the process can be further streamlined to allow for increased malt and malting barley production, benefiting both farmers and the maltster," Mr. Delany added.
Malt markets remain slow in general as the global recession takes its toll on beer and whiskey consumption.
