UK: The Malting Barley Committee reports updates to the list of approved malting barley varieties
The UK Malting Barley Committee has held its Spring 2012 meeting to discuss the progress of new varieties within the testing system. The outcome was the promotion of Moonshine to Provisional Approval 2 for malt distilling use, and Shuffle to Full Approval for malt distilling use and to Provisional 2 for brewing use.
Shuffle showed some reduced husk retention in 2011 and hence this should be considered as part of an overall risk management strategy, along with good agronomic and harvest management practice.
Oxbridge was removed from the Approved List as a malt distilling variety.
Additions to the approved list having been granted Provisional Approval 1 are Winter varieties: Archer and Venture for brewing and Spring varieties: Chronicle, Odyssey and Overture for brewing and malt distilling, the Malting Barley Committee reports.
