Battle Creek Unlimited's $200,000 brewery incentive has been awarded to New Holland Brewing Company, WZZM13.com reported on April 20.
At the end of December, Battle Creek Unlimited put out a request for proposals to breweries interested in coming to Battle Creek, offering up to $200,000 in financial assistance.
The incentive was announced alongside requests for proposals for three downtown properties — 15 Carlyle St., 64 W. Michigan Ave. and 119 W. Michigan Ave.
New Holland's proposal was accepted for both the $200,000 and the 64 W. Michigan Ave. property, which sits right across from Wave Square and next to Rice's Shoe Store.
“We are pleased to expand our footprint into Battle Creek and look forward to partnering with the community to bring a vibrant venue, authentic beer and spirits, and quality service to downtown Battle Creek," said Brett VanderKamp, the president and founder of New Holland, in a press release. "We see several key downtown projects on the horizon as a turning point for downtown Battle Creek and are excited to be a part of the equation.”
New Holland was founded in Holland in 1997. It operates New Holland Pub in Holland, Knickerbocker in Grand Rapids and a Holland production facility.
The brewery produces Dragon's Milk Bourbon Barrel Stout, Mad Hatter IPA and Cabin Fever, a seasonal brew, among others. New Holland's brews sell in 38 states and four countries. The company also began distilling whiskey, rum and gin in 2005.
Among the plans listed for the Battle Creek location are onsite brewing and distilling, lunch and dinner options, a seasonal beer garden, retail and potentially a coffee bar.
Renovations are planned for summer 2018, with a spring 2019 completion date. The company expects to employ around 50 people.
“The New Holland team sees great opportunity in our city," said Joe Sobieralski, Battle Creek Unlimited president and CEO, in a press release. "Their proposal was outstanding, and we truly hit a home run with New Holland and their leadership team. The New Holland Brewing team will invest substantially into the property as they work to remodel this prime downtown location into their newest facility. We are beyond excited to have New Holland set up shop in downtown Battle Creek.”
