Canada, BC: The Savoy Brewery closes down in Nelson
A nanobrewery open since 2016 in Nelson’s Savoy Hotel has unexpectedly closed down, the Canadian Beer News reported on January 29.
The Savoy Brewery was located in the hotel’s Falls Music Lounge restaurant and bar, which has also been shuttered along with the adjoining Farm Fresh Café. The hotel itself remains in operation, as does the onsite Bloom Nightclub.
The Savoy Hotel property was purchased in 2013 by Jimmy Bundschuh, founder of the Shambhala Music Festival, and was renovated and reopened in phases over a five year period, leading up to an official grand re-opening last March.
A statement released on January 28 said that the closure of the brewery and restaurants was primarily due to a “competitive restaurant market” in the area, which made it difficult to “rise above a number of challenges in the industry.”
“I am hugely proud of what my team has achieved and I know that they will go on to do great things,” Bundschuh added. “While I am greatly saddened by the closure of these businesses, I look forward to serving our guests in the hotel and nightclub.”
