Spain: Spain expected to reduce grain imports due to abundant crop this year
Barley news

According to the report of the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) of the US Ministry of Agriculture, in the 2025/26 marketing year, grain production in Spain will exceed 24.1 million tonnes, which will allow for a reduction in imports. This was facilitated by the expansion of sown areas, heavy rainfall, and mild weather that began in March and was favorable for winter crops, as reported by agronews.ua.

It is noted that the spring of 2025 was characterized by abundant rains in Spain from early March to the second half of May, which replenished soil moisture levels, improved water reserves, and ensured high yields on rainfed lands. Currently, the country’s reservoirs are filled to 76.8% of their total capacity, and stable irrigation water supply has allowed for the expansion of corn acreage to almost 130 thousand hectares.

According to forecasts, corn production in Spain this year may exceed 3.6 million tonnes, wheat – 8.5 million tonnes, barley – 9.5 million tonnes, oats – 1.3 million tonnes. However, FAS notes that prolonged spring rains forced farmers in some regions to switch to short-cycle barley varieties with lower yields. Due to waterlogging of the soil, farmers were unable to carry out timely cultivation and fertilizer application, raising concerns about pest proliferation and reduced protein content in grains.

Nevertheless, the steady demand from the livestock sector, supported by positive margin indicators, is expected to persist. Against the backdrop of the expected increase in harvest and stable demand, grain imports to Spain in the 2025/26 season may decrease to 14 million tons compared to over 16 million tons in the current MY.
