Turkey: Barley production forecasted to lower by 5.3% in 2006/07
USDA decreased Turkey barley production forecasts for 2006/07 by 5.3% down to 7.2 million t which lowers the crop level by 5% year-on-year. The pessimistic forecast was inspired by a very drought climate and a strong heat during latest May which damaged substantially the crops. Accordingly, the barley crop level in the south and a southeast of the country is estimated as low.
Experts believe that yielding less barley in the 2006/07 season won’t allow Turkey to export barley. In the previous season, Turkey shipped abroad around 500,000 t of barley. At the same time, import of barley is forecasted to diminish by 37.5% to 25,000 t.
