Scientific Digest
The relativeness of the HSI value
ABSTRACT
For a lot of brewers the HSI value is an important parameter to judge the freshness of the hops purchased and therefore often specified for the purchase. This study looked into the development of the HSI values during the growing season. They found initial HSI values were ranging from 0.18 to 0.30, with a highest range of increase from first to last picking date of 0.10! This makes clear that a higher initial HSI value does not necessarily indicate a higher deterioration rate of hops! Read more

USA, MS: Lucky Town Brewing Co. to move to Jackson, MS
|
Lucky Town Brewing Co., a craft beer company now based in Gluckstadt and getting its beer brewed under contract, has an option to buy a former Greyhound bus service building in Jackson for its own brewery, The New Chronicle reported on September, 2.
Lucky Town Brewing Co. would be the first microbrewery in Jackson, which recently adopted a zoning ordinance for small-scale breweries producing up to 5,000 barrels a year for wholesale distribution.
The option is contingent on a zoning variance and use permit from the city because Lucky Town's site would be within 1,000 of an area zoned for homes, company co-founder Chip Jones said.
The bus barn's high ceilings are good for microbrewing, Jones said.
“The space is plentiful for the next four to five years, and the 1.7-acre lot gives us room to expand for as large as we're ever going to get, probably”, Chip Jones said.
There are few manufacturers in Jackson so far, and the Business Association of Midtown welcomes the brewery, association president Andy Hilton said. Beer wouldn't be sold there, only made, he said — and its presence may attract other businesses, he said.
Midtown Neighborhood Association president Jennifer West said after sit-down meetings with brewery founders, residents are

World: Pernod Ricard confident of good prospects for whisky in emerging markets
|
New Chivas Brothers executive chairman Laurent Lacassagne has said the drinks giant must not overreact to sales falls in Asia and he remains "very confident" in the future of Scotch whisky, The Herald reported on September 4.
Parent company Pernod Ricard, the world's second largest spirits group, said it is prepared to make acquisitions to boost its presence in the United States, where its brands including single malt Glenlivet are performing well.
It also believes there are good prospects for whisky in markets such as South Africa, Brazil and Mexico.
Mr Lacassagne was speaking in London days after Pernod revealed that whisky sales had fallen in Asia, where it gets 40% of its revenues, and China, in particular, during its last financial year.
Mr Lacassagne, who previously ran Pernod Ricard Europe, said his experience in the wine industry taught him to be cautious about major strategy shifts.
"The most important thing in terms of distribution is consistency, and not to over react to short-term changes," he said.
"The future of Scotch whisky is very good," he added.
In China, whisky sales have been hit by the economic slowdown and a government clampdown on conspicuous consumption.
Mr Lacassagne said that Pernod, whose whisky brands include Ballantine's and Royal Salute,

Turkey: Alcohol consumption not appearing to be falling despite high taxes and sales area restrictions
|
Despite high taxes and area restrictions over the last decade of AKP rule, Turkey’s alcohol consumption doesn't appear to be falling, Hurriyet Daily News reported on August 31.
Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç recently objected to a local singer singing a folk song, as the song contained the word “rakı” in the lyrics. It was the song of a Balkan man complaining that he couldn't save enough money for rakı. Even though Arınç said he was joking, his behavior has been perceived as another example of intervention into people’ lifestyles and was criticized as such.
There have been moves against alcohol through taxes, area restrictions and neighborhood pressure over the last decade of Justice and Development Party (AKP) rule. This has been a more noticeable fact in Anatolian cities.
Still, the statistics reveal that alcohol consumption has not dropped radically and there is a formal production and sales as well as an illegal trade. In short, society is saying, “I won’t let you touch my drink!” and is holding out on bans. People propose a toast with rakı, or with wine or beer, which are more affordable for some.
The AKP’s alcohol battle began with “area restrictions.” While Turkey’s current Prime Minister Erdoğan

UK: Transport strike action threatening to affect beer supplies
|
Beer pumps are at risk of running dry in parts of Burton and South Derbyshire as talks continue over possible strike action over deliveries, Burton Mail reported on September 2.
Crucial talks to avoid severe disruption to the deliveries of Fosters, Heineken, Kronenbourg, John Smith’s, Strongbow plus Britvic soft drinks, to almost 30,000 pubs across the UK are continuing after workers for KNDL (Kuehne + Nagel Drinks Logistics) overwhelmingly voted for strike action.
Pubs and premises run by Enterprise Inns, Trust Inns, Wetherspoons, and Wells and Young’s would be badly affected. The company also supplies airports, courts, sports clubs, including Premiership football clubs, recreational centres, theatres and cinemas, health clubs, military camps, working men’s clubs and the hospitality industry.
It is not yet clear how Wetherspoons, which owns The Lord Burton, in High Street, Burton, and the Sir Nigel Gresley, in The Delph, Swadlincote, will be affected if the strike goes ahead and if a plan of action is in the place. The company did not wish to comment.
KNDL plans to move its stock from 29 depots to three super hubs for distribution. But staff members fear that while the 29 depots will remain open, the move could eventually lead to significant job
