Gushing? Use hops and don't move!
ABSTRACT
It is proposed that primary gushing is caused by, among other things, hydrophobines or alkanes that "trap" CO2 into "nanobombs". Possible gushing supressors therefore have to go into competition with those molecules. J. Titze and his team looked into the suitability of certain hop components to do so. They selected 6 different hop oil components. Though these components showed gushing suppressing activities in the
model tests they also found that this effect can be destroyed with abrupt mechanical agitation. The good news is that different high temperature did not influence the gushing suppressing effects!..so don't move to fast while drinking!

Canada, ON: Brick Brewing reports decline in Q2 net revenues
|
Brick Brewing Co. Limited, the largest Canadian-owned and Canadian-based publicly held brewery in Ontario, on September 12 released its financial results for the second quarter of its 2014 fiscal year.
The company's key brands, its growth pillars for the future, performed well in the quarter with Laker volume up 11%, Waterloo up 22% and Seagram coolers and ciders up 5% from the same period last year. The volume gains were achieved amidst a beer category that experienced declines of approximately 5%-6% over the same period, driven by cool summer weather.
Net Revenues for the second quarter of fiscal 2014 were C$11.4 million compared to C$11.5 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2013. The impact of higher volumes was eroded by sales mix and pricing pressure from large brewers' nationally supported brands. Gross profit for the quarter declined to 21.4% in the second quarter of fiscal 2014, from 33.2% in Q2 of the prior year, the result of a shift in package size mix as well as higher operating cost to support free can-in-case promotional activity. EBITDA for the second quarter of fiscal 2014 decreased to C$0.4 million compared to EBITDA of C$2.4 million in the second quarter of fiscal 2013.

USA, CA: San Diego’s Coronado Brewing and Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing release a collaboration brew
|
San Diego’s Coronado Brewing and Tampa’s Cigar City Brewing have collaborated to release The Last Spike Not-So-Common IPA, Shanken News Daily reported on September 12.
Billed as a California Common IPA, The Last Spike is intended to fuse East and West Coast brewing styles and features both a big-malt and dry-hopped character. The 7.5%-abv entry, which debuted at the Cigar City tasting room in August, is slated to launch in Southern California this month, with a limited supply available in 750-ml. bottles across Los Angeles, Orange County and San Diego.

USA, CO: Upslope Brewing Co. ramping up production
|
Seven months into brewing beer at its new Flatiron business park location, Upslope Brewing Co. of Boulder, CO. is ramping up production even more. Founder Matt Cutter only wishes the company had made the move sooner, Business Reporter communicated on September 10.
Upslope had two 120-barrel fermenters and a 120-barrel bright tank installed on September 9. The new tanks should be worked into Upslope’s rotation by next week and give the company an extra 400 barrels of capacity per year. Upslope has a 30-barrel brewhouse and already had five 120-barrel fermenters at its east Boulder location. That’s in addition to the seven-barrel brewhouse still in use at the company’s original location in north Boulder.
“This is how we scale up,” Cutter said. “We’ll just brew more often.”
The new tanks cost about $100,000 and were needed after Upslope had to cut short the production of its limited-release Belgian Pale Ale this year to keep up with demand for its year-round offerings.
“I wish I had these tanks about three months ago,” Cutter said.
Upslope, founded in 2008, added the 20,000-square-foot Flatiron business park location in February, opening a taproom there in April.

USA, MI: Hearings begin on legislation to boost microbreweries output
|
Michigan’s burgeoning craft beer industry is backing a bipartisan package of bills to loosen the state’s complex array of brewery regulations and allow further expansion, The Detroit News reported on September 10.
While lawmakers and craft beer industry officials agree the reforms are needed, some microbrewery owners argue the steps may not be enough to jolt the industry into much higher growth.
Hearings began this week on legislation boosting the number of barrels microbreweries are allowed to produce each year, broaden limits on the ownership of brew pubs and let small brewers serve up their stouts, ales and porters in two drinking rooms apiece.
New Holland Brewing Co. president Brett VanderKamp said it’s about “allowing more market access for (Michigan) brewers.” VanderKamp heads the Michigan Brewers Guild’s government affairs committee.
“We want to provide a little more flexibility for our craft brewers,” added state Rep. Andy Schor, D-Lansing, chief sponsor of one bill. “I’m looking forward to the testimony because there are a lot of intricacies in our regulations.”

USA, NY: The Adirondack Brewery expands distribution of its beer to two more counties
|
The Adirondack Brewery is eager to announce that their newest distribution partner, Clare Rose, Inc, on Long Island, will be supplying both Nassau and Suffolk counties with their locally brewed New York State beer starting September 23rd, Brewbound posted on September 12.
The Adirondack Brewery, located in the Village of Lake George, currently has full distribution in 25 counties in New York, as far west as Syracuse, with self-distribution in the metro-NY area. Adding these 2 counties, in addition to the growth in existing territories will put the Adirondack Brewery’s annual output to 10,000 barrels by 2015. This brewery is well know for their very drinkable, session beers, Bear Naked Ale, Dirty Blond Ale & Beaver Tail Brown Ale, which are all proudly brewed and packaged at 33 Canada Street in Lake George.

USA, AZ: Grand Canyon Brewing collaborates with Arizona homebrewers for Ruby Red Pale Ale
|
Earlier this summer, Arizona homebrewers and craft beer experts, James Swann and Andrew Bauman teamed up with another local brewery, Mudshark Brewing in Lake Havasu City to create RoadZoda—a crisp, American wheat beer with tangerine, mango, vanilla and cinnamon. The limited availability and delicious flavor had local beer fans begging for more, Brewbound reported on September 10.
Continuing on their mission to support local beer and create new flavor profiles, the duo plus homebrewer friend and creative director of HDE Agency, Landon Evans headed up to Williams, AZ in early August to brew with the Grand Canyon Brewing Company.
In collaboration with Andrew Carricato, head brewer at the Grand Canyon Brewing Company, the team created Ruby Red Pale Ale, which was scheduled to be ready for tapping on Septmeber 12th.
Puby Red Pale Ale was made with 21 lbs of ruby red grapefruit, 20 lbs of papaya and 5 lbs of lemon—the perfect end of summer session brew!

USA, LA: Louisiana brewer sued for naming its beer Mechahopzilla
|
The creators of the original Godzilla are reportedly suing a Louisiana-based brewing company over their Mechahopzilla beer, The Inquisitr reported on September 11.
Toho Co., Ltd. is responsible for crafting the giant monster’s original cinematic adventure back in 1954. The creature’s enemy, the robotic Mechagodzilla, was brought to life in 1974. Not surprisingly, the company isn’t exactly thrilled with having these characters ripped off in the US.
According to The Daily Meal, Toho has taken issue with the products manufactured by New Orleans Lager & Ale Brewing Company. Apparently the Godzilla creators feel that Mechahopzilla beer violates a few copyright laws. As a result, the company has filed a lawsuit against the brewer.
Toho reportedly filed the lawsuit after the brewing company decided to ignore requests to halt the manufacturing of Mechahopzilla beer.
“It was Toho’s preference to resolve this matter without a lawsuit, but unfortunately, defendant’s cavalier and intentional disregard for Toho’s intellectual property made legal action necessary,” the production company’s lawyer explained.
Law360 reports that New Orleans Lager & Ale Brewing Company never received a cease and desist order from Toho. They continue to sally forth with the beverage.

USA, NH & MI: Smuttynose Brewing Co. beers coming to Michigan
|
Smuttynose Brewing Co. will enter the state of Michigan for the first time this fall through a partnership with West Side Beer Distributing, Shanken News Daily reported on September 12.
Beginning in October, the beers will be available in four key markets—Grand Rapids, Kalamazoo, Lansing and Romulus/Detroit. Initial shipments of Finestkind IPA and Big A IPA will be available exclusively on draft, with shipments of bottle packages to begin early next year.
With the addition of the Michigan market, Smuttynose will be available across 23 states and Washington, D.C.
The company produced nearly 41,000 barrels of beer last year, and will move into its new brewery and visitors’ center in Hampton, New Hampshire in 2014.

USA, CA: New English barleywine now available at Valiant Brewing Co.
|
Hot on the heels of its six-month anniversary, Valiant Brewing Co., Orange (CA)’s newest microbrewery, has released Stentorian, a 13.3% ABV barrel-aged English barleywine, Brewbound reported on September 10.
“We’ve been waiting a long time for this,” says brewmaster Brian Schroepfer, who owns and operates Valiant Brewing Company with his wife Kelly. Schroepfer developed the recipe for Stentorian years ago, and brewed this batch several months ago before aging it in bourbon barrels.
Deep copper and bronze, Stentorian has an aroma of dried fruit, like plum, date, and rich raisin. The overtone of caramel sweetness combines with a deep malty aroma, while a slight presence of oak helps balance out the complex floral notes from the late-addition Goldings hops.
Valiant has a lineup of 15 craft beers in its tasting room, including some unique styles: an Imperial black espresso Saison (Mounds of Grounds), a Belgian IPA (Tilt Shift), an Imperial chocolate porter (Pathos), and a Double Red Wheat (Stonewall Jackson 5). The brewery recently signed with a Southern California distributor and is talks with a Washington state distributor, and its Fields Ablaze Saison—an easy-drinking 7.2% ABV beer infused with lemongrass-seckel pear tea—won Silver in the 2013 Los Angeles Commercial Beer Competition.

World: AB InBev sells $1.8 bln of bonds in euros and pounds
|
Anheuser-Busch InBev NV (ABI), the world’s biggest brewer, sold $1.8 billion of bonds denominated in euros and pounds after corporate borrowing costs fell to the lowest in three weeks in Europe, Bloomberg reported on September 17.
The average yield demanded to hold investment-grade securities dropped five basis points to 2.02 percent, the lowest since Aug. 27, Bloomberg index data show. The cost of insuring the debt against losses held at a 16-week low, with the Markit iTraxx Europe index of credit-default swaps falling 0.6 basis point to 93 basis points.
AB InBev priced 750 million euros ($1 billion) of seven-year notes to yield 48 basis points more than the mid-swap rate, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.The brewer also sold 500 million pounds ($795 million) of 12-year notes yielding 105 basis points more than U.K. government debt. It’s the company’s first sale in the currency since June 2009, the data show.
Karen Couck, a spokeswoman for AB InBev in Leuven, Belgium confirmed the company was selling bonds without providing any further information.

The Czech Republic: Volume of sold bottled beer prevails over tapped beer in 2012
|
The high popularity of tapped beer, typical of Czechs, is gone now that the volume of sold bottled beer prevailed over the tapped beer drunk in pubs for the first time in 2012, daily Mlada fronta Dnes (MfD) reported on September 16.
In this respect, Czechs are starting to follow the habits of their western neighbours, it writes.
In Germany, one in five sold beers is drunk in a pub, while in the Czech Republic, still in 2011 people drank less beer from bottles or cans than what they consumed in pubs, MfD writes.
Now the situation is markedly changing. Of all the beer sold last year, 44.3 percent was sold in bottles, 43.4 in kegs and the rest in cans or tanks, the paper continues.
As a result, the number of restaurants and beer pubs is declining, it says.
"This change has been underway in the past ten years. The trend accelerated last year, however. I think the main reason is money saving and the tax increase that drew money out from people's pockets. A number of analyses we have had worked out show that beer consumption has transferred to people's homes," says Doug Bradman, outgoing head of the Plzensky Prazdroj brewery.

Germany: Beer at Oktoberfest to be more expensive this year
|
Although prices at Oktoberfest have been inflation-beating for years, consumption of beer keeps rising. Average price of the 1-liter (35 oz) stein of beer will be 9.66 euros ($ 12.85), up 3.6 percent from last year’s festivities, compared with German overall annual inflation of 1.5 percent, Reuters reported on September 17.
Since 1985, the Wiesn Visitor Price Index has risen more than twice as fast as the country’s overall inflation rate, Unicredit calculations show. But this has failed to stem the tide of more beer flowing down visitors’ throats, with millions and millions of litres to be consumed again this year.
Unicredit’s research note also pointed out that the European Central Bank’s low-rate policy could play a role in boosting beer consumption, bucking an international trend of declining brew sales in the face of increasing costs.

China: Chongqing Brewery suspends share trading until the end of September
|
Chongqing Brewery, controlled by Danish brewer Carlsberg, suspended share trading on the Shanghai bourse on September 16, and announced that its subsidiary vaccine maker Jiachen Biological Engineering will begin a review of its Hepatitis B vaccines research soon, Global Times reported on September 16.
It will resume share trading on September 27 after it announces the curative effects of its vaccines.
Chongqing Brewery's share prices surged 37 times during the period from 1998 to 2011, boosted by the news of its involvement in the pharmaceutical sector. But in January 2012, the company said clinical trials of its vaccines showed that the effectiveness is no different from that of a placebo, causing its share price to drop.
Currently its share prices are at around 17 yuan ($2.78), compared with the price of 80 yuan back in 2011.

Belarus: Large share of imported beer worries the authorities
|
Imported beer accounted for about 30% of the total volume of beer sold in Belarus this year. The data was voiced at the government session held in Lida on 11 September to discuss problems of the Belarusian brewing industry, BelTA reported.
The rising volume of beer import is said to be one of the key reasons negatively affecting the development of Belarusian breweries, primarily those with a state share.
In 2012 Belarusian breweries operated at 62% of the output capacity and the falling production trend continues this year, too, said Chairman of the State Control Committee Alexander Yakobson. Breweries with a share of foreign capital are moving in. In January-July 2013, Belarus imported $44.9 million worth of beer, with beer export at $17.7 million.
Vladimir Kalenik, Head of the Central Office for Control over Consumer Market and Services Sphere of the State Control Committee of Belarus, believes that the import percentage is abnormal for a country with a well-developed brewing industry, which relies on local raw materials and is capable of satisfying the domestic demand with quality products. In 2012, imported beer accounted for 3.7% of the total resources in the Russian Federation, 1.3% in Ukraine, and 2% in Poland.

Australia: New barley variety La Trobe expected to improve export opportunities for Australian growers
|
A new barley variety has been officially named at the Australian Barley Technical Symposium. The IGB1101, now officially named La Trobe, will reportedly improve export opportunities for Australian growers in medium to low rainfall areas, Food Processing reported on September 13.
La Trobe reportedly offers similar yields to Hindmarsh, which is the yield benchmark in medium to low rainfall districts, but with an improved malt quality. It was developed as part of an ongoing collaboration between Syngenta and InterGrain, and is owned by the Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DPI) Victoria.
According to Ben Miles, Syngenta Head of Cereals Australasia, the export malt quality of La Trobe provides an opportunity for barley growers in southern regions to capitalise on potential premiums for malting grain as well as reap Hindmarsh yields.
“The feedback we’re getting from maltsters is that there’s a gap in the market for a high-quality export malt variety that is adapted to these growing areas,” Miles said.
“We are hopeful that La Trobe will become an accredited export malt variety, providing growers with all the benefits of growing Hindmarsh, which they like, plus giving them full potential to access a decent malt premium.”
La Trobe is undergoing Australian Malting and Brewing Accreditation.
