Gushing? Use hops and don't move!

ABSTRACT
It is proposed that primary gushing is caused by, among other things, hydrophobines or alkanes that "trap" CO2 into "nanobombs". Possible gushing supressors therefore have to go into competition with those molecules. J. Titze and his team looked into the suitability of certain hop components to do so. They selected 6 different hop oil components. Though these components showed gushing suppressing activities in the model tests they also found that this effect can be destroyed with abrupt mechanical agitation. The good news is that different high temperature did not influence the gushing suppressing effects!..so don't move to fast while drinking!

Brewery news Namibia: Namibia Breweries Limited reports higher beer sales volumes in the year to June 30
Namibians have continued to love the beer bottle with Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL) announcing on September 19 that overall beer sales volumes on the local market grew at double digits, delivering a 12% growth in the year ended 30 June compared to the previous year, The Namibian reported.

The company said in financial results that the Tafel brand continued to outperform the portfolio and was the main driver of the overall beer growth.

“Windhoek Draught continues to perform well and has also contributed to the overall growth in volumes,” the company said.

SABMiller, NBL’s biggest competitor in Namibia is expected to open a brewery at Okahandja in mid 2015 with an installed capacity of 260 000 hectolitres per annum, which can be expanded to 400 000 hectolitres. SABMiller is investing N$420 million in the brewery.

The results revealed that after tax, profit dropped to N$72 million from N$221 million last year. Revenue increased to N$2,38 billion from N$2,16 billion last year. Revenue increased mainly due to performance of the home market and increased volumes produced and supplied to DHN its South African Joint Venture. Operating profit for the year grew by 17% compared to the previous year.

Brewery news South Korea: Craft beer does not even appear in statistics yet, but interest in it is phenomenal
In a tangle of nondescript alleyways in central Seoul’s Noksapyeong district, a handful of Korean and foreign entrepreneurs are pioneering a new market for homegrown craft beers, The Wall Street Journal reported on September 18.

Hidden opposite a side exit to the U.S. Army’s giant Yongsan garrison is trend-setting brewpub Craftworks Brewing Co. Defying its shabby surroundings, Craftworks’ interior is upscale. The bar’s eight taps pour artisanal ales, wheat beers, lagers and porters — each branded with a Korean name.

Canadian Dan Vroon opened Craftworks with six fellow expats in 2010. The concept: Sell Korean-made North American-style craft beers.

The go-to location for foreign bars in Seoul is Itaewon, the city’s expatriate ghetto a mile away, but Mr. Vroon decided on Noksapyeong for his watering hole. Several small foreign-run bars and restaurants already existed there, spillover from Itaewon, which has gentrified in recent years.

“Rents were overpriced in Itaewon and there was no space,” Mr. Vroon says.

While imported beer sales in South Korea have edged up in recent years, the local market is dominated by a duopoly of giant brewers, Oriental Brewery Co. and Hite-Jinro Co., whose output is exclusively mild, U.S.-style lagers. Mr. Vroon was convinced demand existed among expatriates and Koreans who’d ...More info on site

Brewery news Australia: CUB shifts Carlton Cold to mid-strength category
The shakeup at Carlton & United Breweries continues apace, with the underperforming Carlton Cold brand being shifted from its current form to mid-strength, The Shout reported on September 20.

Currently brewed at four per cent AVB, Cold will be downgraded to 3.5 per cent, as the brewing giant fine-tunes its offering in a beer climate that sees one in five sold in Australia now a mid-strength.

“The new Carlton Cold, along with Carlton Mid and Peroni Leggera now form the three main brews in our mid strength offering,” says CUB’s General Manager of Marketing for Carlton Brands Andrew Meldrum.

The move echoes CUB CEO Ari Mervis’ comments last month that certain brands were due for reworking, and that the CUB beer portfolio needed more clarity in its market targets.

"What we have done is we've identified which brands need to participate in which consumer segments," Mervis said.

CUB last year restored the original 4.9 per cent AVB recipe of its flailing flagship Victoria Bitter product in a successful attempt to reinvigorate the brand, which had lost its crown as the country’s top-selling beer.

Meanwhile, the recent advertising drive that has accompanied Crown Lager’s own reboot has been given another shot in the arm, ...More info on site

Whisky news India: Court gives UB Group one week to submit report on stake sale to Diageo
The Karnataka high court on September 17 gave Vijay Mallya’s UB Group one week to submit an audited report on United Breweries Holdings Ltd’s (UBHL’s) stake sale in United Spirits Ltd (USL) to Diageo Plc, Livemint reports.

Five groups of creditors to Kingfisher Airlines Ltd, the UB Group’s grounded airline, have filed winding-up petitions in the Karnataka high court against United Breweries, which has given corporate guarantees worth nearly Rs.9,000 crore for the airline’s debt.

To raise funds, Mallya, through United Breweries and other group companies, agreed in November to sell stake in United Spirits, India’s largest distiller, to Diageo.

Kingfisher’s creditors tried to stop the stake sale, but the high court had allowed United Breweries in May to sell over 13.5 million United Spirits shares to the UK distiller. It had also asked the company to deposit Rs.250 crore in the court related to the winding-up petitions and to submit a detailed report on the sale.

While United Breweries deposited Rs.250 crore with the court it hasn’t yet submitted the complete report. United Breweries also couldn’t sell the entire amount of 13.5 million shares as some UB Group lenders refused to release nearly 3.5 million United Spirits shares that they held as pledge ...More info on site
