If craft beers are botteled in PET, what happens to the hop aroma?
ABSTRACT
This question was investigated by a team of German researchers. They investigated the flavor and hop aroma stability of two different craft beers (IPA, Pilsner type, both dry hopped) over a period of 6 months bottled in different PET materials. They found that the quality of the relevant PET material is crucial for the flavour and
hop aroma stability. Choosing high quality PET material along with cool storage temperatures ensures the flavour and aroma decay over time is relatively small. Read more

USA: Government shutdown halts debuting new products in beer and other industries
|
Brewers that are waiting for approval on labels for new products won't get the go-ahead during the government shutdown, STLToday.com reported on October 1.
The partial shutdown of the U.S. government that began on October 1 means Anheuser-Busch and other beer, wine and spirits producers won't be able to get labels approved, a necessary step in debuting new products or making changes to existing products' labels.
St. Louis-based Anheuser-Busch, the North American headquarters for the world's largest brewer, AB InBev, said at any given time it has "a handful" of pending label applications and product formulas before the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau, which oversees beer labels.
“A government shutdown could impact our ability to efficiently move those applications forward or submit new ones in the short-term,” an AB spokeswoman wrote in an email.
According to beer news website Beerpulse.com, the TTB has received 111,090 label requests for wine, beer and spirits labels since the start of the year, and the shutdown will halt the approval of about 400 labels daily.
A message on the TTB's website says: “Due to the lapse in government funding, only web sites supporting excepted functions will be updated unless otherwise funded.”
Producers can still file electronic payments and

USA: MillerCoors to expand its Leinenkugel brand’s product line
|
MillerCoors is bullish on the Leinenkugel brand. Crain’s Chicago Business reports the brewing giant is expanding the brand’s product line, advertising and distribution to appeal to a wider range of beer drinkers, similar to how MillerCoors has done with its Blue Moon brand in recent years.
There’s room to grow in the beer marketplace and Leinenkugel, which already has a wide range of styles in its product line, is getting this vote of confidence largely on the strength of sales of its Summer Shandy. Jacob Leinenkugel Brewing Co. President Jake Leinenkugel said half of the company’s business this year has been from sales of Summer Shandy, which became the first of their brands to be available in all 50 states and have national advertising behind it.
"We never thought it would be that big but it continues to grow,” Leinenkugel said.
Dick Leinenkugel, business development manager for Tenth & Blake Brewing Co., the craft division of Chicago-based MillerCoors, said Summer Shandy “gives us a real strong platform because there are more people than ever interested in our brand. After they discover Summer Shandy, they say 'what else do you make?'"
MillerCoors’ increased investment in Leinenkugel is another battle for the consumer dollars of

Malaysia: Higher alcohol excises will encourage illicit parallel imports – Carlsberg Malaysia MD
|
Raising excise duty on alcohol will encourage illicit parallel imports which is a problem in Malaysia just as contraband cigarettes is a problem for the cigarette industry, The Malaysian Reserve reported on October 2.
“We have seen an increasing level of parallel imports in the beer industry and some of these parallel imports (relatively unknown brands coming into the country selling at cheaper prices) are selling at lower price than local producers.
We are concerned that a further hike in the beer taxes will encourage parallel imports that would not be beneficial for the local producers who pay tax,” Carlsberg Malaysia Bhd MD Henrik Juel Andersen said.
“We hope that the government will continue to protect the local industry,” said Andersen.
The market has been abuzz with the speculation that the “sin” sector will be taxed more ahead of Budget 2014. So far, the tobacco industry has been slapped with a 14% additional excise tax and excise duty.
Alcohol last saw an excise hike in 2005 and, according to Andersen, that puts Malaysian alcohol tax as the second-highest in the world and the highest in Asia.
Andersen hopes that alcohol tax will not go up especially with the coming Visit Malaysia Year 2014 where more

Brazil: Ambev introduces new import beer from the Netherlands
|
Ambev, Brazil’s largest brewer and part of the world’s No. 1 beer company AB InBev, is expanding its import beer portfolio, Veja reported on September 30.
The company has added the Dutch beer Hertog Jan to its line of 15 imported beer brands in Brazil, which also includes the Belgian Leffe and Hoegaarden, the German Franziskaner, Quilmes from Argentina, and others.
Hertog Jan will be marketed exclusively through the company’s Internet-shop Empório da Cerveja, at R$30 reais per 500 ml bottle.
Today, the premium beer segment is estimated to account for 6% of Ambev’s overall sales. The company aims to increase this share to 8% by 2014.

The Netherlands: Heineken aiming at revolutionizing beer consumption at home
|
Heineken has said it plans to introduce a home appliance for beer, in a move that it claims will “revolutionise the way beer is experienced and enjoyed at home”, NamNews reported on September 27.
The Dutch group said it will reveal the product in Paris on 17 October, and would only say that it will an “iconic high end home appliance” similar to coffee machines.
Heineken said the machine has been designed through its global tie-up with industrial designer Marc Newson, who led the project. The brewer noted: “We spotted the opportunity to create a premium but playful at home drinking experience for consumers.”
Explaining the move, Heineken said latest trends indicate that consumers are increasingly looking to enhance the at-home drinking experience. The product is aimed at helping it capitalise on that, even as it uses product design to try and differentiate itself from rivals.

Ukraine & Latvia: Ukrainian investors building new microbrewery in Riga
|
Across from the Riga Passenger Port at Republikas Square 1, construction is under way on the Stargorod beer brewery and restaurant – a project from a team of Ukrainian investors worth EUR 18 million, LETA/Nozare.lv reported on September 30.
The developer is Baltic Pub Ltd., and it has completely revamped the existing edifice. State-of-the-art brewing and catering facilities and equipment will be installed, manufactured in the Czech Republic.
Doors are to open at the end of this year, and customers can expect classic types of Czech beer, snacks and entrees, and big screens all around for sports viewing.
Andrejs Sikors, the Alus brālība Association's chairman of the board, commented to Nozare.lv that "the appearance of new players on the market is a good thing; the number of micro-brews is growing, and this can be applauded. Such breweries offer a special product, satisfying consumer demand. Stiffer competition will facilitate beer drinking, and – maybe – boost consumption, which is quite low in Latvia."
Stargorod is one of the biggest breweries and entertainment complexes in Ukraine, with restaurants in Harkov, Lviv and Donetsk. The company's concept is the brewery, pub and eatery all under one roof which gives the customer the added pleasure

The Netherlands & China: Heineken accuses Chinese machinery company of pirating its name and logo
|
China became the world's copycatting centre by faking everything from Louis Vuitton bags and PhD diplomas to Apple stores. Now Heineken has become the latest multinational to face an intellectual property challenge - from a tiny Chinese sewing machine company. The global brewer has accused Wujiang Xili Machinery Factory, a company from Jiangsu province with fewer than 50 employees, of pirating its name and logo, and using them at a Shanghai trade show last week, MoneyControl reported on September 28.
The case comes as China comes under continuing pressure from the US, Europe and Japan to improve its intellectual property record.
China this month amended its trademark law in ways that lawyers say will make it easier for foreign companies to protect their trademarks. The new law, which takes effect in May, will raise the penalty for trademark infringement and increase the burden on a defendant to prove that an application was made in good faith. Geoffrey Lin, a lawyer at Ropes & Gray, said China has become "more consistent" in the application of its intellectual property laws. But he said foreign companies still face a lot of "hijacking" where local companies register trademarks that resemble those of a multinational

USA & Mexico: Mexico’s craft brewers interested in US malting barley
|
Mexico’s growing craft beer industry sent its first delegate to Idaho barley country, as part of a trade team that left Sept. 26 following an overnight visit, Capital Press reported on September 27.
“We for the first time had representatives from the craft beer segment in Mexico, which is small but growing like it is in the U.S.,” said Idaho Barley Commission Administrator Kelly Olson. “They’re trying to figure out what it would take to get barley from this region.”
Jose Ruiz, manager of MI CerveSA and a representative with the Craft Brewers Association in Mexico, said craft brewing in his country has enjoyed recent annual growth above 60 percent.
“Craft breweries in Mexico have grown from 20 five years ago to almost 100 now,” Ruiz said.
He said Mexican craft breweries — known for using no sugars other than malt in their beers and for their small, independent ownership — still have too little volume to contract for U.S. acreage, or buy directly from the big malting companies.
“I see it will continue to grow. We expect it to follow the same trend as in the USA, so maybe in the future we’ll be in a position to buy direct from here,” Ruiz said.
