If craft beers are botteled in PET, what happens to the hop aroma?
ABSTRACT
This question was investigated by a team of German researchers. They investigated the flavor and hop aroma stability of two different craft beers (IPA, Pilsner type, both dry hopped) over a period of 6 months bottled in different PET materials. They found that the quality of the relevant PET material is crucial for the flavour and
hop aroma stability. Choosing high quality PET material along with cool storage temperatures ensures the flavour and aroma decay over time is relatively small.

Russia: Russian brewers propose their own limits on selling beer in PET bottles
|
Russian brewers are proposing their own limits on selling beer in plastic bottles as the State Duma considers stricter measures that would weigh on sales of brewers including Carlsberg A/S and Anheuser-Busch InBev NV, Bloomberg reported on October 2.
The industry is willing to stop producing beer in plastic bottles larger than 2.5 litres from January, Isaac Sheps, head of the Union of Russian Brewers, told reporters in Moscow on October 2. The State Duma is considering two separate proposals that would ban sales in plastic bottles of more than half a litre or a litre.
About half of the country’s beer is sold in plastic bottles, according to the trade group, whose members include Carlsberg, InBev and Heineken NV. Russian beer production was 90.4 million hectolitres last year, 18 percent lower than in 2008, as the country has raised excise taxes on beer, banned most advertising for the beverage and restricted sales.
The brewers also agreed to stop producing strong beer in plastic bottles larger than 2 litres, Sheps said.

USA: Craft brewers offer better beer and plenty of potential for growth

While giant brewers like Budweiser and Molson Coors still dominate the U.S. beer market, craft brewers have managed to carve out a decent sized niche for themselves.
Not only do companies like Boston Beer Company offer an arguably better beer, but you can tell that there is a great level of care put into the product as well. Many consumers have noticed the flavor—or at least the uniqueness– and have allowed Boston Beer to grow into the great position it finds itself in today, Investor Place communicated on October 3.
Yet even with the solid level of growth that the company has seen so far, Boston Beer makes up less than 1.5% of the total U.S. market, suggesting that it clearly has plenty of room to grow. For this reason, and America’s current obsession with craft beer, this brewer of Boston Lager could be worth a closer look.

South Africa: SABMiller workers strike continues but beer supplies are not expected to be affected by it

The Food and Allied Workers Union says more SA Breweries (SAB) workers will join its nationwide strike if a wage agreement is not reached soon, The Post reported on October 4.
The union is asking for a 9 percent increase, whereas SAB is offering 7 percent.
The strike entered its fifth day on October 4.
Fawu general secretary Katishi Masemola said workers from Durban as well as those in the SAB soft drink division would be asked to join the strike. They were also considering asking SABMiller employees around the world to join in.
“SAB claims it is offering a guaranteed 7 percent increase, but that is not the case. The offer is a 4.2 percent across the board and another 2.8 percent for performance merit.
“We’ll know soon whether the Durban branch will be joining the strike and we would also look into asking SABMiller workers across the world to join.”
SAB spokeswoman Robyn Chalmers said the strike would not cause a shortage of beer.
“We have a full contingency plan to ensure that we have the people and infrastructure in place to keep our operations as normal as possible for the duration of the strike.

Australia: Carlton & United Breweries to double sales of its relaunched craft beer portfolio
|
Australia’s second largest brewer, Carlton & United Breweries, wants to double sales of its relaunched Cascade craft beer portfolio within four years as it begins an assault on the booming niche market it has failed to leverage for a decade, Financial Review reported on October 3.
After arresting the decade-long decline in the nation’s biggest beer, VB, SABMiller wants to resuscitate earnings in the craft category – a market that has been in double digit growth for years, but a sector in which CUB previous management acknowledged they had under-invested.
SABMiller bought CUB parent Foster’s Group for A$12.3 billion in December 2011.
Cascade was launched a month ago and officially unveiled at its Cascade brewery in Hobart on October 2. Cascade Brewery Co brand manager Louise Thiele said CUB had neglected Cascade, underpinning a sales decline of 10 per cent year-on-year for five years.
The new lower alcohol content Cascade Premium Lager, pale ale and the new bright ale beers feature the brewery, the oldest in Australia, on the label and are sold in brown rather than green bottles.

Canada & China: Russell Breweries completes construction of its first brewery in China
|
Russell Breweries Inc. reported on October 2 that its partners in China (Russell Breweries Inc. China "RBIC") have now completed construction on the new test brewery in Hefei, China. The brewery is now fully operational and its adjoining restaurant is ready to open in the coming days.
This will be the first brewery in this region of China to offer premium small-batch beers made to North American craft brewing standards. Standard quality control protocols will be monitored by a Senior Brewer, Kevin Wilson from the company's head office in British Columbia, Canada. Kevin is currently in China training local brewers and overseeing the implementation of the company's stringent quality control measures to ensure product consistency.

USA & Mexico : Baja Brewing starts distribution in the USA market
|
Mexico-based Baja Brewing has expanded its U.S. presence with the launch of its flagship Cabotella ale across Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico and Texas, Shanken News Daily reported on October 3.
Cabotella is billed as a golden, medium-bodied blonde ale. The 5.5%-abv entry will be offered in Arizona and New Mexico via Southern Wine & Spirits, in Colorado via Baroness and in Texas via both L&F and Intwine Distributors.
Established in 2007 in the Mexican state of Baja California Sur, Baja offers eight core beers, as well as variety of seasonals, and reported a total production of 2,400 barrels for 2012.

Australia: Australian government extends time for approving ADM’s acquisition of GrainCorp
|
The Australian government on October 4 extended the time period for approving the US$3.1 billion acquisition of Australian grain handler GrainCorp Ltd by US-based Archer Daniels Midland Co (ADM), Domain-B.com reports.
The Australian Foreign Investment Review Board (FIRB) will now give its decision on the deal by 17 December.
''Given the size of this transaction and the complex nature of the issues involved, I have decided to extend the statutory time period. This will allow sufficient time for the new government to carefully consider all the relevant issues and advice from the FIRB before making a decision," Australian Treasurer Joe Hockey, who also oversees FIRB, said in a statement.
Describing GrainCorp as a ''significant Australian company'', Hockey said, ''The government welcomes foreign investment because of the benefits that it provides to the Australian economy.''
Australia's new conservative government, which took office in September, has said that it is open to foreign investment in the country, although its coalition partner, the National Party, has opposed the ADM-GrainCorp merger.
In April, GrainCorp, Australia's largest independent grain handler, finally agreed to be acquired by ADM, after the Illinois-based agriculture giant sweetened its offer to US$3.1 billion plus dividend from its earlier US$2.9 billion offer.
