ABSTRACT
Serbian researchers looked into the comparison
of electrochemical versus spectrophotometric
assessment of antioxidant activity of hop components. In conclusion, in contrast to the most commonly applied
spectrophotometric antioxidant assays (DPPH, radical
scavenging of 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl, FRAP,
ferric reducing antioxidant power and ABTS, scavenging
of 2,2-azino-bis-3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulfonic
acid) the recently developed DC (direct current)
polarographic assay recognizes humulone as a superior
antioxidant in comparison with various hop phenolics.
This is an additional evidence on bitter acids efficiency
as antioxidants, indicated in recent literature, and
suggests that their contribution to total antioxidant
activity of complex hop samples should not be
neglected. Hop H2O2 scavenging activity positively
correlated with the content of humulone and total
resins, and negatively with hop storage index. So the DC
polarographic assay might be a good addition for the
routine analyses in the brewing industry!

Australia: Australians increasingly opting for imported beer over local products
|
Australians are increasingly opting for imported beer over local products, new research from Roy Morgan Research shows. While most Australians are patriotic in their beer choice, an increasing number are making the switch to imported beer - particularly younger drinkers.
In the year to September 2013, 35% of Australians drank Australian beer in an average four weeks, down from 39% in the year to September 2009. Over the same period, the proportion of Australians who drank imported beer in any given four weeks grew from 14 to 17%.
Attitudes towards Australian beer have also shifted, with fewer Australian drinkers agreeing with the statement “Australian beer is the only beer worth drinking”. In September 2013, only 13% of drinkers agreed with the statement, compared to 18% in 2009.
While 43% of drinkers aged 18 to 25 drank domestic beer in 2009, only 35% reported drinking Australian beer in 2013. Younger consumers of imported beer grew from 23 to 28% over the same period.
“A key differentiator in type of beer consumed is age, with those aged under 25 showing a greater preference for imported beers than those aged 25 and over,” said Geoffrey Smith, general manager consumer products, Roy Morgan Research.

Canada: Molson Coors and AB InBev agree to shut down JV on Modelo brands distribution earlier than planned
|
Molson Coors Brewing announced earlier this week that it had agreed to exit a JV with AB InBev early – March 1 2014 rather than January 1 2018 – that covers the distribution of Grupo Modelo’s brands in Canada.
AB InBev will pay Molson Coors C$70 mln ($67 mln) to terminate the deal, while doubts persist over the future of the latter’s licensing deal with SABMiller (via MillerCoors) to distribute its brands in Canada.
Molson Coors won a temporary injunction back in June to continue managing the SAB brands ahead of a full court hearing over the dispute – SAB blames low sales volumes and missed targets on its move to terminate the licensing agreement – after Molson Coors sued its partner back in January.

Asia: Heineken’s Tiger beer sales up 20% in Q3 2013
|
Heineken attributes booming Tiger beer sales of 20% in Asia Pacific to a more mainstream market positioning slightly below its eponymous brand, Beverage Daily reported on November 6.
Across the region, the Heineken brands grew low single digit in Q3 2013, but the real star on the show was Tiger – which accounts for around 25% of Asia Pacific volumes – with regional growth of 20%.
“We have taken a slightly different position towards the Tiger brand than what was happening under the previous management. We have put Tiger more in between mainstream and the Heineken brands,” Heineken CFO Rene Hooft Graafland said.
“Still premium, but more affordable premium, making sure that they can source out of mainstream volumes and see that in markets like Vietnam. And that is a very, very successful strategy.”
