Namibia: The Namibian Competition Commission approves takeover of Camelthorn Brewing by Namibia Breweries Limited
|
The Namibian Competition Commission has approved the takeover of microbrewery, Camelthorn Brewing, by Namibia Breweries Limited. The approval is without conditions, the Commission announced on January 6.
According to a report by AllAfrica.com, the Commission said the merger is not likely to give rise to anti-competitive concerns in view of the significance of NBL in the Namibian beer market.
The Commission said it also considered the fact that Camelthorn is currently facing financial difficulty, and based on the evaluation of it being determined a failing undertaking, it resolved to approve the merger without conditions.
Namibia Breweries is the biggest commercial beer company in Namibia, while Camelthorn is a micro brewer of organic craft beers including brands such as Weissbier, Light Weissbier, Helles, Gold, Red Ale and Sundowner.
In December, NBL announced on the Namibia Stock Exchange, that it had advised shareholders that negotiations were still in progress, which if successfully concluded, may have a material effect on the price of the company´s shares.
In December, it emerged that Camelthorn Brewing Company, has reached a debt settlement agreement with the Development Bank of Namibia over a N$10 million debt.

USA & Spain: US brewing company partners with Spanish brewery to produce new beers
|
Due South Brewing, a US-based distributing microbrewery, has partnered with a new brewery - Edge Brewing - in Barcelona, Spain, Drinks Business Review reported on January 3.
Under the collaboration, Due South Brewing founder and head brewer Mike Halker will move to Spain in February 2014 to brew two different styles of beer.
Besides the production of new beers, other plans in the deal include introducing locals to Due South's beers and beer dinners.
Following this, Halker will return to Spain for the release of the new beers in early March 2014.
Halker was quoted by Craftbeer as saying that this collaboration indicates the beginning of a cultural shift in Spain, a country known more for its wine than its beer.
"The American craft beer movement is gaining popularity in Europe and Due South Brewing Co. is thrilled to help expose the people of Spain to the plethora of flavor possibilities when it comes to designing unique beers," Halker added.

UK & Russia: UK’s Inveralmond Brewery signs a deal to export its beers to Russia
|
An independent Perthshire, UK, craft brewery has signed a major deal to export four of its most popular beers to Russia, The Scotstman reported on January 7.
Inveralmond Brewery, which is based in Perth, has reached an agreement with Russian distribution company Elizabet to sell its Lia Fail, Ossian, Thrappledouser and Blackfriars beers in the expanding Baltic market.
A spokeswoman for the brewery said: “Russia is one of the UK’s fastest-growing export markets and the third-largest export market outside Europe and North America. Assisted by Scottish Development International in establishing the trade, Inveralmond Brewery is the latest Scottish food and drink producer to join a growing Russian export market and is expected to see sales rise as a direct result.”
She added: “Until very recently Russia had considered beer a ‘soft’ drink, or more specifically a ‘foodstuff’, as it fell below the 10 per cent alcohol limits until Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a bill, which came into effect in January 2012, that now officially classifies beer as alcoholic.
“Soaring in popularity in recent years, with Russian beer sales rising by more than 40 per cent, the product is frequently marketed to Russians as a healthier alternative to spirits.”

Jamaica: Brewer Red Stripe signs land lease agreement to grow cassava
|
Jamaica’s Agriculture Ministry and brewing company Red Stripe signed a lease agreement on January 7 for lands at Bernard Lodge in St Catherine to facilitate a multi-million dollar cassava-growing project, Jamaica Observer reported.
The agreement signed at Red Stripe’s Spanish Town Road head office in Kingston will facilitate the provision of an initial 36.2 acres to implement a pilot project.
“Thirty-six acres might seem small. But what you intend to do is employ best practices and you are going to be moving cassava production to the level (where) farmers can make (a livelihood) out of growing cassava,” Agriculture minister Roger Clarke said at the signing.
The pilot is the initial phase of the project targeting some 500 acres for cultivation over an 18-month period by Red Stripe, with some US$1 million earmarked for this segment of the undertaking.
Diageo, Red Stripe’s parent company aims to replace 20 per cent of imported inputs, primarily barley, used in the production of its flagship product Red Stripe Beer, by 2016.

Tanzania: Local distributor assures its customers it would work on increasing sales volume of Windhoek Premium Lager
|
Mabibo Beer Wines and Spirit Limited has assured its customers that it would work on obstacles hampering the increase of sales volume of Windhoek Premium Larger amid its plan of setting a plant for brewing the beers in Tanzania, Daily News reported on January 6.
The company has exclusive rights of importing and distributing the beer brand in the country. It is currently importing the products from Namibia Breweries Limited (NBL), the manufacturer of Windhoek.
Mabibo’s Director General Benedictor Rugemalira told a news conference that his company would also make sure that bar owners and other sellers stick to the recommended price of 58,000/- per carton so that the beers reach customers at cheap price.
“Bar owners are required to sell a bottle of Windhoek at 3,000/- or a differential of 500/- of local beer. Through such price, the bar owner is assured of reaping a profit of 14,000/- per carton. This profit cannot be obtained from any other local beer in the country,” she stressed.

USA: Barley researchers and end-users discuss progress in Scab-resistant barley breeding
|
Barley researchers and end-users gathered in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on December 3-5, 2013 to participate in the National Fusarium Head Blight Forum to discuss the progress made in developing Fusarium head blight (Scab) resistant barley varieties and the direction of future research, Farm & Ranch Guide reports.
The forum was made possible with funding from the USDA Agricultural Research Service (ARS) as part of its nationwide efforts to combat Scab in wheat and barley called the US Wheat and Barley Scab Initiative (USWBSI).
Scab is a fungal infection of wheat and barley heads, and after several years of devastating losses to the disease in the upper Midwest in the mid-90s, Congress provided the USDA-ARS with funding for the USWBSI. Research has not only focused on identifying new sources of resistance, but also on refining techniques to incorporate new resistance into new barley varieties, and on cultural practices that minimize the occurrence and spread of the fungus.

USA: Some small craft brewers having trouble securing hops for their beers
|
Some small craft brewers in the US are having trouble securing hops for their flavorful beers, even though Washington state farmers have boosted production of the crop in recent years, The Seattle Times reported on January 7.
Growing demand from craft brewers is prompting more farmers to plant the aroma variety of hops that add herbal, fruity and floral flavors to microbrews.
The Tri-City Herald reported on January 6 that Washington farmers harvested more than 54.9 million pounds of hops last year, up 13 percent from 2012.
But the number of craft breweries is also growing. As of 2013, there were almost 2,500 craft breweries nationwide, according to the Boulder, Colo.-based Brewers Association. That was nearly 500 more than 2011.
Mike Sutherland, owner of White Bluffs Brewing in Richland, says those breweries are all competing for hops.
Area breweries say they don't expect the demand for craft beers to decline.
Craft beers are flavorful, said Geoff Gruetzmacher of Richland's Growler Guys. And it's that taste that has helped make them popular.

World: Drinks companies using whisky brands to sell flavoured spirit drinks
|
Drinks companies have become braver about using whisky brands to sell spirit drinks that don't meet strict Scotch whisky rules, as the industry prepares for another year of production expansion, The Herald reported on January 2.
Meanwhile, more marketing heft is being directed to single malts, even as blends remain dominant in the sales mix, as companies seek to establish their whiskies as luxury brands.
This is occurring against a backdrop of expansion in production with Swedish company Grythyttan turning to investors this month seeking £1 million to build a distillery on Orkney (Scotland).
French spirits giant Pernod Ricard is currently shipping the first bottles of Ballantine's Brasil to target markets in Spain, France and Latin America.
The drink mixes Ballantine's whisky with lime but to meet rules about the use of the term Scotch whisky, which are enshrined in European law, the company describes it as a "spirit drink".
It is targeted at young nighttime consumers who already drink Ballantine's Finest with mixers.
Earlier this year, privately owned Edrington used its Famous Grouse brand to launch Ginger Grouse, an alcoholic ginger beer "infused" with its flagship whisky, targeting the Scottish market.
The likes of Drambuie have also long used whisky in liqueur.
