USA, NC: Appalachian Mountain Brewery completes name change
|
Appalachian Mountain Brewery, Inc. (OTC:HOPS), is pleased to announce, the Financial Industry Regulatory Authority ("FINRA") has approved its name change from North Carolina Natural Energy, Inc. (OTC:NCNE), and will begin trading under the new OTC stock symbol "HOPS." Shareholders do not need to take any action regarding this change, Wall Street Journal reported on January 8.
Appalachian Mountain Brewery ("AMB") is profitable and is consolidating its financial statements now to be published showing results of operations for its year end December 31, 2013. In response to inquiries coming into the company, AMB is filing Form D with US Securities and Exchange Commission and Form U2A with the North Carolina Secretary of State Securities Division, preparing to engage its 506c Crowd Funding, allowing qualified investors to take advantage of the recently passed JOBS Act.
The JOBS Act allows high net worth investors to contact AMB to participate in the growth of Appalachian Mountain Brewery by purchasing preferred stock directly from the company in a private placement. USA, OH: Lawmaker reintroduces bill to encourage business growth in Ohio craft beer industry
|
Rep. Dan Ramos, D-Lorain, has reintroduced a bill into the legislature that he says will encourage business growth and create more choices for brewers and consumers, Akron Legal News reported on January 9.
House Bill 391 would allow brewers to produce and sell beer containing up to 21% alcohol by volume.
The bill, which Ramos originally introduced in the last General Assembly as House Bill 356, will help “spur economic development in Ohio’s growing brewing industry,” the lawmaker said in a statement.
“The brewing industry is one of the few sectors that continued to experience growth through the recession,” he said. “It is time Ohio abandons unnecessary regulations that put us at a competitive disadvantage with other states and do whatever we can to encourage the further growth of these businesses.”
Under current Ohio law, beer produced or sold in the state is restricted to 12 percent ABV.
Ohio last raised its ABV cap in 2002, from 6 percent to 12 percent alcohol by volume.
Ramos said craft brewers currently provide an estimated 108,000 jobs nationally and the industry has seen double-digit growth over much of the last decade, with more breweries operating in 2012 than at any time since the 1880s.

USA, NY: Druthers Brewing Company plans to open second brewery
|
An interesting potential development in North Albany's warehouse district: Druthers Brewing Company -- which already has a brew pub in downtown Saratoga Springs -- has been granted a zoning variance in order to open a production facility and tasting room/restaurant, Alloveralbany reported on January 9.
Druthers partner and brewmaster George de Piro posted about the plan at the TU's Beer Nut blog:
Our current location in Saratoga Springs has been doing pretty well and we really want to get our beer to a wider audience. The 10 BBL (barrel) brewing system there can barely handle demand, so to sell more beer we need to build another brewery. I live in Albany and want to do more to help revitalize our downtown. Thus, the decision was made to open Druthers II in New York's capital.
De Piro's post includes a projected start date for brewing of June 2014, "if everything goes perfectly."

USA, IA & CA: Shmaltz Brewing Company expanding distribution to Iowa
|
Shmaltz Brewing Co. is expanding to Iowa per an agreement with Johnson Brothers of Iowa, making it the 35th state in the brewery’s distribution footprint, Brewbound reported on January 8.
It marks the first big announcement of the year from the brewery, which enjoyed a very active 2013. Over the past 12 months, the company opened a new production facility in Upstate New York, sold its Coney Island line to Alchemy & Science, and landed 10 new distribution agreements across eight states.
According to a press release, the brewery is projected to increase its staff to 20 employees and reach $4 million in sales this year.
“We are really excited to bring Shmaltz Brewing Company and He’brew® beers to Iowa,” said Lyle Stutzman, President Johnson Brothers, in the release. “Having the ‘Best Craft Brewer in America’ in our portfolio is an honor.”

USA, MT: The Front Brewing Company to expand capacity
|
The Front Brewing Co. has purchased the former Sperry’s Market building in Great Falls to quadruple its production capacity for microbrew craft beers, company president Linda Caricaburu said on January 8, according to Great Falls Tribune.
Caricaburu said the company had reached capacity at its main site and was unable to meet growing demands for its beers, particularly the popular Mountain Man Ale.
They’ll keep producing with a 10-barrel system at the original Westside building but will add a 30-barrel system in the building downtown, she said.
Caricaburu said she now employs the equivalent of two and a half full-time employees and expects to hire another one or two workers at the new facility, “possibly more after we ramp up.”
Her husband, Brad Talcott, owns both buildings.
The former market served more recently as an ice cream production facility for the Udder Factory, but has been vacant, Caricaburu said. She said she and her husband wanted to be part of the downtown renovation and felt that building met their needs with high ceilings, solid floors and cooling systems.
They hope to have the new production facility in operation by early spring, depending on the time it takes to get licensing approved, she said.

USA, NC & CA: Sierra Nevada Brewery making progress; plans to open in August
|
Stan Cooper, co-manager of the Sierra Nevada brewery under construction in Mills River, updated Town Council members on January 9 on the facility's progress, BlueRidgeNow.com reported.
He talked about the company's plans to include a child care center on the property, about 80 acres of which the company is requesting be annexed into Mills River and rezoned light industrial.
He also mentioned eventual plans for a health care center on the property that would serve company employees. Music and entertainment facilities are also planned, along with a meeting facility and a “beer camp” where visitors can stay overnight in cabins while attending brewing classes for several days.
“We are not nearly complete,” in terms of construction, he said, but he expects the facility to be open to the public by early August.
“We are done with the first phase of our building” plans and are brewing beer, “but we are struggling to mimic the product flavor profile due to a number of differences in the altitude and the weather,” compared to the company's headquarters in Chico, California, he said.

USA, NM: Santa Fe Brewing Company expanding its brewery operations
|
After years of research and planning, Santa Fe Brewing has made the decision to expand its brewery operation. The purhase of the 3.27 acre piece of land adjacent to the existing brewery in Santa Fe will be used to build a new brewing facility that will increase capacity significantly, Brewbound reported on January 9.
The Santa Fe Brewing expansion is projected to take three years and to be completed in three different phases. “We are excited to take this next step in growing Santa Fe Brewing”, said Brian Lock, president. “We have not scheduled a date to break ground because we were waiting to make sure everything with the land acquisition was final”. When construction of the final phase is complete the brewery will be able to increase its capacity from the current 30,000 barrels annually to 200,000 barrels annually.
With the expansion of distribution into three new states in 2013, a new facility was inevitable. “In order to keep up with demand we had to rethink or current facility and we were lucky that the property right next door was available,” remarked Lock.

|
Lafayette's third brewery, The Post Brewing Co., opened for the first time on January 9, according to Daily Camera.
The Post Brewing Co., a chicken and beer restaurant concept, is the brainchild of long-time restaurateur Dave Query, of the Big Red F Group. Big Red F operates Jax Fish House, Centro Latin Kitchen and The West End Tavern.
The beer listed on the The Post's online menu is primarily from area breweries, including neighboring brewery Odd13.

USA, WI: Oldest brewery in Wisconsin to start making beer again after fire
|
Minhas Craft Brewery in Monroe announced that it would start making new batches of beer the week of January 20 — two months after a fire caused more than $2 million in damage to the nation’s second-oldest brewery, Wisconsin State Journal reported on January 9.
The November 21 fire, which started in a second-floor stairwell and shot to 20 feet above the third-floor roof, was put out within 10 minutes by more than 100 firefighters from Monroe and 18 surrounding communities.
An official cause of the fire has not been determined, but it was believed to have started because of a malfunction in a portable pump being used by a subcontractor to spray foam insulation on the walls of the stairwell, located next to rooms housing the brewery’s fermentation tanks, brewery president Gary Olson said in an interview on January 9.
Olson declined to name the subcontractor, citing ongoing legal work involved with insurance.
No one was seriously injured in the fire, although one Monroe firefighter was treated and released for smoke inhalation and has since returned to work.

Canada, MB: Winnipeg beer brewers get C$200,000 deal
|
Some local brewers are about to take their beer-production business to the next level in Manitoba.
The entrepreneurs behind Farmery Estate Brewery have inked a deal to see their product brewed in the province, CBC News reported on January 09.
Lawrence and Chris Warwaruk, brothers from Manitoba, pitched their idea to build a brewery on their estate in Neepawa.
They grow the hops in province for their beer, dubbed Farmery, but will now be able to brew it right here at home. Previously, their beer was made in partnership with an Ontario business.
The brothers already own a gastropub in South Osborne, named Luxalune. The pub offers dozens of different brews from around the world, including the beer they developed themselves.
The brothers eventually chose a deal with David Chilton and Arlene Dickinson.
Chilton and Dickinson offered the brothers one of two arrangements, and they opted for a deal that would provide C$200,000 for the costs of the on site brewery, which are estimated at a total of C$1.5 million.
In exchange, Chilton and Dickinson got a six per cent royalty.
The deal means the brothers will build Canada’s first estate brewery.

The Czech Republic: Heineken loses exclusivity on use of term “Radler” in the Czech Republic
|
The brewing group Heineken has lost exclusive rights over the use of the term "Radler" for a beer mixed with lemonade in the Czech Republic, according to a decision of the Intellectual Property Office (UPV) that was confirmed to CTK on January 9 by UPV spokesman Josef Dvornak.
Some of the Czech breweries had to stop using the term on their products over Heineken's exclusivity. Now they want to turn to courts for damages.
Heineken said it was analysing the ruling and that its steps would follow in the weeks to come.
Pivovary Staropramen, the second largest brewery in the Czech Republic, launched Staropramen Cool Lemon, a mix of lemon juice and beer, on the market in May 2011. Consequently, beer flavoured with lemonade or another soft drink became a hit in the country.
Some brewers started using the term "Radler" on their products.
Radler is used for beer mix drinks in German-speaking countries where they are very popular.
Kralovsky Pivovar Krusovice, one of top five Czech brewers owned by Heineken, had the trademark registered in the Czech Republic in 2001. Upon an injunction issued on the request of Heineken, competitor breweries had to stop using it on the Czech market.

Australia: Adelaide scientists prepare to release a revolutionary barley variety
|
Adelaide agricultural scientists are about to release a new type of barley grain they say could boost yields by as much as 10 per cent, ABC reported on January 8.
The variety named Compass has been developed over the past five years by a team at the University of Adelaide's Waite Campus.
Test crops were planted in a range of conditions at more than 34 farms across the country, including sites in Western Australia and Queensland.
The barley is one of many new Australian varieties undergoing testing ahead of commercial approval and researchers hope the final test results will be released within weeks, making the grain available for sowing in 2015.
Program leader Jason Eglinton says the crop has demonstrated its robustness during trials and yields about 10 per cent more than the dominant Commander variety.
"The improvements that we've been able to achieve are through a number of small contributions all combined," he said.
"There's improvements in the disease resistance of the new variety.
There's improvements in the grain size and the stability in the grain size, small differences in its developmental pattern."
Dr Eglinton says the grain is not the result of genetic modification but selective breeding.

Australia: AWB increases barley pools estimated returns
|
AWB on January 9 increased its South Australian & Victorian 2013/14 Barley Pools Estimated Pool Returns (EPRs) by A$14 - A$23 a tonne.
Head of Trading and Risk Management Mr Josh Martin said: "Domestically barley prices have increased and the market has found a level of support from continued dry conditions and demand in NSW & Queensland."
"Globally feed markets have been recently impacted by China's rejection of GM US corn however this has impacted positively on Australian barley demand and price as the market sees current Australian barley prices as fair value," Mr Martin said.
"We anticipate record barley exports into China this year which is a positive for pool participants and we continue to invest considerable effort in maintaining and building relationships in supplying feed barley to Asia and Middle East markets, where customers are looking for reliable suppliers."

UK & Hong Kong: Welsh brewery to export its beer to Hong Kong for the first time
|
A Welsh brewery is making inroads in China with its much-admired stout, Wales Online reported on January 9.
Sam Tam, a director of Trafalgar, a large bar in Hong Kong’s metropolitan Wan Chai district, is thought to have become the first person to strike a deal with Cardiff’s Brains brewery to get Brains Black anywhere outside Wales.
Drinkers in Hong Kong will soon get the chance to compare it to Guinness, one of the most popular drinks among beer-lovers in Hong Kong.
When Brains Black was launched in 2010, Brains hoped it would provide an alternative to Guinness, the market leader in the stout world.

At the launch of Brains Black, Brains invited former Welsh rugby player Rob Jones and former Ireland international Simon Easterby to a blind taste test between the Welsh beer and Guinness.
The Welshman guessed the Brains beer correctly but the Irishman struggled to tell the difference between the Welsh and Irish beers.
The Welsh stout also performed well against Guinness in taste tests with consumers.

Iceland: Iceland brewer launches whale beer

Iceland doesn't treat cetaceans the way most of the world wants them to be treated. Like Japan and Norway, Iceland has continued to hunt fin and minke whales in defiance of an international moratorium on the practice. It's not a challenge to find a restaurant serving whale meat in the capital city of Reykjavík. With all this in mind, it is not really surprising that Iceland's whaling business has recently teamed up with a brewery to produce "whale beer", The Atlantic reported on January 9.
Hvalur, the company managed by "the Icelandic Ahab" Kristján Loftsson, is providing whale meal—a byproduct of processing the animal's meat and oil—to Steðja Brewery to create a limited edition product tied to Iceland's annual mid-winter festival Thorrablot. The beer, marketed as a drink for "true vikings," will only be available from January 24 through February 22. It's 5.2 percent alcohol and is supposedly "healthy" by virtue of containing whale, which is, according to the brewery, high in protein and low in fat.
