Canada: Canadian government takes steps to improve the performance of the rail supply chain to help farmers get grain to market
|
Canadian Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz announced on February 5 the federal government is taking further measures to improve the grain transportation supply chain based on the Crop Logistics Working Group's recommendations, according to Progressiverailroading.com.
Immediate actions include pursuing enhancements to the grain monitoring program to improve the frequency of reporting and providing an ongoing forum for grain industry representatives to discuss improvements.
A proposed expanded range of metrics and reporting frequencies would include railroad order fulfillment information pertaining to weekly rail-car orders; the size of the grain service covered hopper fleet for both mainline carriers by class of service on a weekly basis; terminal unloading performance by railroad; Western Canada grain traffic via rail to Eastern Canada, U.S. and Mexican destinations; U.S. grain traffic to Western Canadian destinations; and Western Canadian grain traffic shipped to ports in containers.
"Canada's crop industry is a vital part of the Canadian economy and we will continue to work with all parts of the supply chain to get farmers' products to market," said Ritz in a press release. "Current transportation challenges faced by producers present an opportunity for the entire value chain to improve efficiencies and position Canada's grain sector for future growth."

USA, IN: Evil Czech Brewery expands to Mishawaka
|
Culver-based Evil Czech Brewery is moving production to Mishawaka. The new venue will be a full service restaurant and brewery, WNDU-TV reported on February 5.
As of now, the brew pub is set to open in April. And renovations are well under way. Flooring and artwork is complete in the new facility, but construction crews are still on site installing equipment.
The new location is meant to provide more space for brewing, but it is also a way to bring in more traffic. The facility was the former home of the Mishawaka Brewing Company.
"We took the old Mishawaka Brew Co. and we gutted this whole building out," said Shawn Erickson, the General Manager at Evil Czech. "The cool thing about it is a lot of people, they actually hold this building in high regard as a brewing facility before. So, hopefully we can re-invigorate the community with brewing."
The company is keeping much of the new facility under wraps, but says the final product will be much different from the former Mishawaka Brewing Co.
"There's going to be a lot of surprises when we open the doors," said Erickson. "It's going to be very, very ahead of its time in this area."

USA, CO & WI: Avery Brewing Co. announces distribution to Wisconsin
|
The Avery Brewing Company announced on February 5 that it is expand its distribution in Wisconsin by partnering with Beechwood Sales & Service and Specialty Beverage of Wisconsin. Starting this week Avery beers will be available throughout the entire state in package and on draft.
“We are so proud to have full distribution once again to the homeland of both our CFO and our plant engineer,” said Adam Avery, the brewery’s president, CEO and brewmaster. “Wisconsin has a long and proud history with beer and we are honored to be a part of it.”
Bottles, cans, and draft of year round beers like White Rascal Belgian-Style White Ale, Avery IPA and Ellie’s Brown Ale will be the first available, and seasonals and other limited releases will arrive in the months to follow.
“What makes a brand like Avery stand out, is the quality of the beers,” said Dave Cartwright of Beechwood and Specialty Beverage of Wisconsin. “We were greatly disappointed when Avery decided to pull from most of Wisconsin due to capacity constraints three years ago. USA, VA: Champion Brewing Company expanding production in Charlottesville
|
Champion Brewing Company, based in Charlottesville, will soon be able to produce 20 times as much beer as it does now, the Charlottesville Newsplex reported on February 5.
The company is opening a brand new producing facility, one that is much bigger than their current one. They started moving in some of the brewing equipment on February 5.
They say the new facility will allow them to meet their increasing demand both in the Central Virginia area and around the state.
They will also be hiring a few more people to work at the new facility.
Champion Brewing Company plan to start brewing there by April.

Japan & USA: Japanese whisky’s presence in the US is small but growing
|
Consumer enthusiasm for whiskies has created new opportunities for origins beyond Scotland, the U.S. and Ireland—and Japanese whisky is looking to benefit from the trend. The category’s presence in the U.S. is small at about 8,000 cases, according to Impact Databank, but its upscale positioning has attracted new attention, Shanken News Daily reported on February 6.
“American consumers now have a broad appetite for exploration when it comes to whiskies,” says Robin Coupar, senior brand manager of fine whiskies at Campari America, which currently imports the Suntory whisky line from Japan. Those labels include single malt brand The Yamazaki, which has a 12-year-old ($65 a 750-ml.), 18-year-old ($200) and 25-year-old ($1,600); single malt The Hakushu, offering 12-year-old ($65) and a more peated version at $160; and 12-year-old blend Hibiki ($65).
The whiskies of Suntory’s great rival, Nikka Whisky Distilling Co., are handled in the U.S. by Anchor Distilling Co., which markets Nikka’s single malt brand Yoichi 15-year-old ($130) and pure malt Taketsuru 12-year-old ($70). Anchor also has limited inventories of the Taketsuru 17-year-old ($150) and 21-year-old ($180). A little over one year after opening its doors, Worthy Brewing Company is expanding distribution into Idaho, partnered with Hayden Beverage, Brewbound reported on February 5.
Worthy’s portfolio will be available at select retailers, restaurants and craft beer bars throughout the state by the end of February. Worthy Brewing Company delivers remarkably balanced, filtered ales that are hand-crafted using all natural, premium ingredients and the great water from the Cascade Mountains in Bend, Oregon. Their flagship beers include: Worthy IPA, Worthy Pale Ale, Easy Day Kolsch, and Lights Out Stout. Worthy packages its beer in 12 oz. aluminum cans because of efficient shipping, superior protection of the beer and infinite recyclability. Their bottling line also cranks out 22 ounce bottles of Worthy Imperial IPA, along with limited releases of seasonal beers, such as Powder Keg Winter Ale.

USA, ID: Edge Brewing Company opens in Boise

For the past two or three years, Marcus Bezuhly and his wife, Sherry, watched patrons at their Homebrewstuff shop in Garden City open breweries: Payette, Crooked Fence, Slanted Rock, the soon-to-debut Bogus and Cloud 9, the Idaho Statesman reported on February 5.
"They're all customers of mine," Marcus Bezuhly says. "To see them opening breweries, I was like, 'I need to do this, too!' "
One transformed office building and $1.6 million later, Boise has its newest brewpub. Bezuhly and his wife opened Edge Brewing Co. and restaurant on February 5. It's the second newcomer to materialize in the past month - Woodland Empire Ale Craft opened in January - continuing a mini-rampage of new breweries.
"I feel like we don't have to be first," Bezuhly says. "We just have to brew the best beer we can. I think that's the important thing. We're all about the variety and quality of beer."
Bezuhly, a home brewer for 16 years, says he hates the term "flagship beer."
"One of the things I've always loved about home brewing is just always being able to make something different," he says.

USA, WA: Burwood Brewing Company opens its doors to the public
|
Starting this week, 100 pints of craft beer will be poured every Thursday at Walla Walla’s new Burwood Brewing Co., Union-Bulletin.com reported on February 5.
After at least five months of planning, form-filing, organizing and creating, David and Jennifer Marshall are able to open their doors in the winery incubator complex at the Walla Walla Regional Airport.
The limited quantity of beer available is due to the relatively small size of the current system at Burwood. It produces only enough for 100 pints. A bigger system will be brought in, and a spring grand opening is in the works.
In the meantime, the 100 Pint Nights start at 4:30 p.m. Thursdays and will last until the beer is gone. Only one style of beer will be poured each week. It will be available by the glass only. A different style of beer will be poured each week.
Burwood is the first brewery to join the incubator village. But the Marshalls are no strangers to beer.

USA, CA: La Jolla Brewing Company holds grand opening
|
The La Jolla Brewing Company held a grand opening on January 30, in the former home of the La Jolla Brew House. Samples of San Diego beers, including those made by La Jolla Brewing Company, were served at the opening, Lajollalight.com reported on February 5.
Brewmaster Brett Stampf has 20 years of brewing experience at breweries such as Dogfish Head, Green Flash Brewing and Stone Brewing Co. He plans to brew about five beers in house while showcasing more than 20 local beers, such as those from newcomer Modern Times Brewery.
Management partner Joe Matibag said since the soft opening in early January, residents have been receptive to the establishment, and have come in to check out the atmosphere and food.
“We want a local pub-style establishment where there is a comfortable neighborhood feel and it’s a nice place to hang out,” he said. “We plan to cater to a variety of patrons, including beer aficionados and also those who want to try something new. We want to create a space for the craft breweries around San Diego to showcase their beers.”

UK & India: UK Office of Fair Trading concerned about the impact of Diageo’s deal with United Spirits
|
Despite Diageo offering to divest bulk of Whyte & Mackay business to address anti-competition concerns posed by its deal with United Spirits, the UK OFT expressed concern about the impact of the deal, Money Life reported on February 7.
The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) in the UK has released a 53-page report detailing concerns posed by the Diageo-United Spirits deal to competition in the British whisky market.
On 25 November 2013, the OFT decided to have a fresh look at the $2 billion deal, after Diageo offered to divest bulk of Whyte & Mackay (W&M) business to address anti-competition concerns posed by this merger.
The regulator on February 6 made public the “full text” of its 25th November decision, wherein it said that “the OFT is concerned only by the impact of the transaction“.
“The focus of the competitive assessment is therefore on the incremental effect on competition of Diageo’s shareholding and the control this confers on Diageo.
“... A significant number of third parties raised the concern that the parties would restrict the supply and/or increase prices of private label blended Scotch whisky,” the 53-page order said.

UK: Whisky industry complains of “sustained pressure” from taxation
|
Scotch whisky is under “sustained pressure” from taxation, with spirits facing a more punitive tax burden than any other consumer product in the UK, The Grocer reported on February 7.
Representatives of the Scottish Whisky Association (SWA) met the economic secretary to the Treasury Nicky Morgan on February 6 to discuss effects of above-inflation excise duty on the industry.
Whisky drinkers pay 48% more duty than beer drinkers for the same amount of alcohol, said SWA chief executive David Frost, and VAT and duty now account for 79% of the average price of a bottle of Scottish whisky.
“Scrapping the duty escalator and freezing alcohol duty this year would benefit the UK economy and hard-pressed consumers,” he said, adding that it was unfair that one part of the drinks industry has been singled out, when the government removed the escalator from beer last year.
Duty has risen 44% since the duty escalator was introduced in 2008, according to the SWA, and while exports are increasing, the UK market for Scotch has declined 12% by volume. It is now 21% lower than it was a decade ago.
“An unfair tax system, penalising an important domestic industry, sends the wrong signals to overseas governments,” Frost said.
