Brewery news Japan: Beer shipments rise 9.5% in January
Japan’s shipments of beer and beerlike alcoholic drinks rose 9.5 percent in January from the previous year, logging their first increase in three months on solid sales of mainstay products spruced up by renewals, The Japan Times quoted data from five major brewers on February 13.

The pace of growth is the highest since the 13 percent logged in January 2011. Some 22.48 million cases were shipped last month, with each case equivalent to 20 633-ml bottles on a volume basis.

Two of the leaders — Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Kirin Brewery Co. — renewed key products in December. Their efforts got a lift from the unusually long New Year holidays, which coincided with a stretch of good weather that contributed to the sales surge.

By category, regular beer shipments soared 10 percent to 11.21 million cases thanks to robust demand from households and stores. Shipments of “happoshu,” a low-malt near-beer, grew 3.5 percent to 3.15 million cases, while cheap “third-category beer” gained 11.2 percent to 8.11 million cases.

The five breweries are Asahi Breweries, Kirin Brewery, Suntory Liquors Ltd., Sapporo Breweries Ltd. and Orion Breweries Ltd.

Brewery news Malaysia: Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia and Guinness Anchor stocks gain on expectations of strong Q4 results
Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia Bhd and Guiness Anchor Bhd (GAB) snatched the two top spots among gainers on February 11 as investors expect their fourth quarter results to be strong, The Edge Malaysia reported.

At 12.30 pm noon break, Carlsberg – the top gainer – jumped 44 sen or 3.6% to RM12.62 per share on trades of 215,000 shares. The stock has been rising from RM11.10 in the past several trading days.

GAB, which ranked second among risers, soared 36 sen or 2.6% to RM14.48 on 99,300 shares. Like Carlsberg, it has started to rise earlier this month.

“It could be due to expectations of higher profitability. There were fewer measures (against the breweries) in the recent Budget and there were a few positive brokers' reports over the past few weeks,” said Ian Yoong, a private investor and former investment banker.

Yoong also told theedgemalaysia.com: "The recent M&A activity in the global alcoholic beverage sector has raised the bar to about 20-25x EBITDA.

“Malaysian breweries Guinness Anchor and Carlsberg are trading way below this benchmark. The interest in these stocks may be an indication of impending M&A (merger and acquisition) activity."

A dealer said fourth quarter results of these companies could be better due to the festive ...More info on site

NB proposed to pay 4.50 naira dividend. ($1 = 163.45 naira)

Brewery news UK: Budvar’s new UK sales director discusses growth strategy
Budvar’s new UK sales director plans to grow the business by pushing 33cl cans, price-marked packs, the super-premium Budvar Premier Select and an alcohol-free beer, Off Licence News reported on February 14.

Simon George recently joined the business from Magners, and he has pledged to spark “sustainable growth” in “an iconic beer brand” by diversifying away from the core brand.

He said: “In the off-trade we have a real opportunity around Budvar in cans. We have spent £3.5 million on the canning line to revamp it.

“Cans for us are up 47% in the last year, driven by a really good performance of the 33cl can.

“Sainsbury’s has taken that 6x33cl and it’s doing really well. It’s a point of difference.”

George also singled out non-alcoholic beer as an opportunity. He said although Budvar’s non-alcoholic offering did not have good distribution it was was “an excellent proposition” and “a huge opportunity” for the brand.

He added: “Of all the non-alcoholic beers in the world this one actually tastes like a beer. That category could do with a refresh.

“We also have a strong opportunity to develop the 7.5% abv Premier Select.”

George admitted that this category is under intense pressure from government, but said he hoped the authorities ...More info on site

Brewery news France: Heineken claims sales leadership over Carlsberg brands
Heineken’s iconic brand gained 0.4 points in 2013 to reach a 17.3% market share and become the new market leader in France, Pascal Sabrie, Heineken France President, was quoted as saying by Le Figaro on February 13.

Citing IRI data, Mr. Sabrie said the Dutch brand thus overcame Carlsberg’s Kronenbourg (16.2% market share by volume) and 1664 beer (10.3%) in hypermarkets. Heineken, which is priced even higher, claims 18.4% of the market in value terms, against Kronenbourg’s 12.5% and 1664’s 11.3%.

Kronenbourg owners, however, don’t agree with Heineken and claim hypermarket leadership at 17.6%, pointing out that the latter does not take into account sales of Kronenbourg 7.2 (amber) Kronenbourg Pur Malt (alcohol-free), comparing Heineken sales to Kronenbourg Export’s (blonde) only.

Brewery news The Czech Republic: Budweiser Budvar invests in new can filling line to meet growing at-home consumption trend
Budweiser Budvar says it chose to invest in a new KHS can filling line following a recent shift in the nation’s beer market towards at-home beer consumption, BeverageDaily.com reported on February 10.

In 2013 around 40% of beer sold in the country was consumed in restaurants and bars, the beer brand says, compared with 50% in 2005, with keg, tank, vat and barrel sales declining.

Budweiser Budvar is the No.4 brand in the Czech Republic behind Pilsner Urquell, Staropramen and Heineken – native industry average sales rose 1.5% in 2012, but the brand recorded 2% growth. According to a recent case study released by KHS, sales of Budweiser Budvar in PET and glass bottles now account for 70% of brand sales at home, followed by 25% in kegs, tanks, vats and barrels and the remaining 5% in cans, a figure that is rising.

“To date we had our cans filled under license. However, as there’s been a distinct growth in the sale of canned beer, it’s now worth investing in our own canning line. Even if our can sales should stagnate, it’s still profitable,” Adam Brož, master brewer and director of production and technology at Budweiser Budvar said.

The Czech brewer recently installed a ...More info on site

Brewery news Belarus: Vice Premier orders investigation of Heineken’s loss-making operations
Belarus’ Vice Premier Mikhail Rusyi instructed the Mogilev Oblast authorities to look into the reasons for the loss-making operation of the Heineken business in Bobruisk and to submit a report within a week. The Vice Premier took part in a meeting of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee to review the economic performance of the region in 2013, BelTA reported on February 13.

The Vice Premier said he was bewildered why such a big famous brewing company has been operating in the red in Belarus for several years already. “According to economic laws, such enterprises are either closed down or sold to other more successful companies. If this does not happen, it means Heineken has some other sources of income,” said Mikhail Rusyi.

“We need to look into this matter and sort everything out over the next week,” said Mikhail Rusyi. “After all, if the company does not earn a profit, it means it does not pay corresponding taxes to the budget. This is not good, especially for such a well-known brand as Heineken.”

For his part, the Chairman of the Mogilev Oblast Executive Committee Piotr Rudnik suggested setting out a target for all regional businesses and organizations regarding the return on sales, which ...More info on site
