Brewery news USA: Some of once very popular beers now struggling to attract consumers’ interest
Beer is not selling the way it used to. U.S. sales of the beverage declined in four of the past five years. Between 2007 and 2012, beer sales fell by 2.3%, or more than 4.8 million barrels, Business Time reported on February 27.

This overall drop in beer sales is yet another challenge many of the once most popular U.S. brands have to overcome as they continue to lose market share. According to data provided by Beer Marketer’s Insights, American sales of nine major brands, including the once top-selling Budweiser, declined by more than 25% over the past five years. Michelob Light’s U.S. sales declined by nearly 70%.

According to Eric Shepard, executive editor at Beer Marketer’s Insights, major brewers point to the lingering effects of the recession as the reason beer sales are down. While this is clearly the case, it is likely just one of the causes.

Wine and spirits have done much better, especially as they added flavored brands. “The [beer] brewers have dabbled in that, and have had some success with, for example, Redd’s Apple Ale, but nowhere near the success that flavored vodkas and flavored whiskeys have had,” Shepard said. Flavored and craft beers have performed extremely ...More info on site

Brewery news Brazil: Ambev to launch Corona beer in Q2 this year
Ambev, the Brazilian arm of the world’s largest beer maker AB InBev, plans to introduce Corona beer in Brazil in the second quarter of this year, Terra Brasil reported on February 26.

The launch makes part of the company’s strategy to expand in the premium beer segment which offers a higher margin.

Joao Castro Neves, the company’s General Manager, said in a teleconference with analysts, the beer was expected to arrive in Brazil after the World Soccer Cup and to be positioned as a “super premium” product.

Last year, Ambev’s super premium beers accounted for about 7% of the company’s volume in Brazil. Its total beer sales in the country dropped by 4.3% damaged by inflation and unfavourable weather.

The company has a positive outlook for the current year, expecting that the beer industry will return to growth helped by lower prices and the FIFA World Cup.

Brewery news USA: Belgian-style wheat beer seen as fastest growing craft beer, but some question whether it can be called “craft”
A Belgian-style wheat beer by the name of Shock Top is the fastest growing craft beer in the US, according to Moody’s. Production of Shock Top surged by 64% between 2011 and 2012, according to data the ratings firm recently collected. For the record, Shock Top’s growth comes off a comparatively low base. Pennsylvania-based DG Yuengling is the largest craft beer in the US, according to Moody’s. It rolled out 3.3 million barrels in 2012, capturing 16% of the craft beer market share.

It should also be noted that Shock Top isn’t a concoction that some regional brewer came up with. The beer was launched by Belgian brewing giant Anheuser-Busch InBev, the world’s largest brewer by sales, in 2006 as a direct answer to Blue Moon, which marked big beer’s first major foray into the craft beers sector. (Blue Moon is made by MillerCoors, a joint venture of two of AB Inbev’s global rivals.)

As a result, some question whether it is even fair to call Shock Top a “craft beer.” The Brewers’ Association, a craft beer industry group, says these kinds of beers are more accurately described as “crafty,” because of what it says is the less-than-upfront way they’re are marketed ...More info on site
