Hops against Alzheimer disease!

ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers have screened more than 1600 plants used in Chinese medicine to see if any of these could be used to treat the Alzheimer disease, which is the most frequently observed neurodegenerative disorder in Japan and other advanced countries. Guess what they found as a promising plant - hops! It is generally accepted that Alzheimer disease is caused by a certain protein (Aβ) and the production of this protein was inhibited by a hops extract. A major component resulting in the inhibitory activity was purified, and its chemical identity was determined to be Garcinielliptone HC. For the experiments, model mice with Alzheimer disease with hop extracts consumed daily in their drinking water showed significant mitigation of memory impairment at ages of 9 and 12 months. Moreover, oral administration of hop extracts also prevented an emotional disturbance. Despite lifelong consumption of hop extracts, no deleterious side effects were observed at any age. So if you don't forget your daily share of hops you won't forget anything any longer.

Brewery news USA: Brewers Association Board Meeting produces strategic changes
At a two-day meeting held February 26-27 in Boulder, CO, the Brewers Association (BA) Board of Directors introduced changes to the association’s foundational framework to better serve the not-for-profit trade group’s membership of small and independent American craft brewers, according to Association’s news release of March 3. The Board approved changes to the Brewers Association purpose, mission, core values & beliefs, and the craft brewer definition.

Purpose

Slightly revised, the Brewers Association now states its purpose as: To promote and protect American craft brewers, their beers and the community of brewing enthusiasts. “In spirit and action, our purpose remains unchanged,” said Gary Fish, chair of the BA Board of Directors and president of Deschutes Brewery. “Removing the previous reference to ‘craft beers’—which the Brewers Association does not define, but rather leaves to the beer enthusiast—allows the focus to remain on the craft brewers the BA works to promote and protect.” Mission

The Brewers Association mission now states: By 2020, America’s craft brewers will have more than 20 percent market share and will continue to be recognized as making the best beer in the world. We will:

Promote access to raw materials and markets Support research and advances in safety, sustainability, education, technology and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: All signs point to continued craft beer industry success
Craft beer production was up 9.6 percent in 2013, while overall beer production fell 1.4 percent, according to Technomic's "2014 Special Trends in Adult Beverage Report: State of the Industry" report. And that continued popularity of specialty beers is paving the way for a new crop of beer makers, CNBC.com reported on March 2.

"Over the last couple of years, the number of new brewery openings has been at near unprecedented levels," said Bart Watson, Ph.D., staff economist at Brewers Association, a craft beer industry group. "We're seeing breweries open at about a rate of 1.2 per day."

While the 1990s and early 2000s saw a big rise in brew pubs, the trend today leans more toward microbreweries that aim to distribute their product. That puts them up against the giants of the beer industry—like Anheuser-Busch and Molson Coors—as well as national craft brewers who are nearly as well known, including Boston Beer Co., maker of Samuel Adams, and privately held Sierra Nevada.

Craft breweries have a few things working in their favor, perhaps the most important of which is a customer base that's financially well off. Nielsen reports that 58.9 percent of craft beer drinkers have annual incomes of $75,000 or more. ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: Beer sales overall still on the way down but things look better when craft beer comes into the picture
While the Beer Institute industry lobbying group notes that January beer sales were up 0.7% from the same month last year, the fact is that beer sales overall are still on the way down. The Treasury Department's Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau reported a 1.5% decrease in overall beer sales and a 2.6-million barrel loss in beer production. That's basically akin to shutting down Boston Beer's Samuel Adams brand (which produced 2.7 million barrels in 2012) for an entire year, The Street reported on March 4.

Yet the analysts at Moody's decided to look on the bright side when assessing the big beer picture for 2014. Maybe U.S. beer consumption by volume has dropped in four of the past five years, thanks largely to Anheuser-Busch InBev and SABMiller/MolsonCoors joint venture MillerCoors selling a lot less light lager. Maybe that same downturn reduced beer's share of the overall alcohol market from 55% in 2000 to 49% in 2012. But that's not so bad when craft beer volume increased by an estimated 15% last year, industry observers point out.

"Major brewers Anheuser-Busch InBev and MillerCoors have captured more than 18% of the U.S. craft market combined with brands like Blue Moon, Shock ...More info on site

Brewery news USA: AB InBev adds two new flavours to Bud Light Lime Ritas range
Beer major AB InBev has expanded the portfolio of its Bud Light Lime Ritas with two new flavors - Mang-O-Rita and Raz-Ber-Rita, Drinks Business Review reported on March 4.

Lime-A-Rita, Straw-Ber-Rita and seasonal Cran-Brrr-Rita are the other three existing flavors in the Bud Light Lime Ritas range.

With 8% ABV, the new flavored malt beverages offer Bud Light Lime refreshment with the taste of mango and raspberry margaritas.

The company is offering Mang-O-Rita and Raz-Ber-Rita flavors for sale in three pack sizes including, 12-pack 8oz cans; four-pack 16oz cans; and 24oz individual cans.

AB InBev has also introduced a four-flavor Mix-A-Rita 18-pack to encourage mixology.

All the flavors are also available in a Mix-A-Rita 18-pack, which includes six Lime-A-Ritas, four Straw-Ber-Ritas, four Mang-O-Ritas and four Raz-Ber-Ritas.

Bud Light vice president Rob McCarthy said they anticipate Raz-Ber-Rita and Mang-O-Rita to continue extending the brand into the popular margarita space.

"With four permanent Rita flavors to choose from, and our new convenient mixed pack featuring them all, we're excited to see consumers experiment and create their own "Mix-A-Rita" combinations," McCarthy added.

Brewery news USA, IL: AB InBev-owned Goose Island plans major expansion
In the wake of a 70% jump in sales last year, Goose Island Beer Co. is laying plans for significant expansion. The Chicago-based craft brewer, acquired by Anheuser-Busch InBev in 2011, has leased a 130,000-square-foot warehouse near its headquarters on Chicago’s north side, where it plans to house hundreds of new Bourbon barrels for production of its Bourbon County Stout series, which is aged for more than a year, Shanken News Daily reported on February 28.

Bourbon County, offered just one day a year and priced at $25 a four-pack of 12-ounce bottles, has sold out in a matter of hours everywhere it’s been released. The product, offered in flavors such as coffee, rye and vanilla, has become a cult favorite, with beer lovers in cities such as Miami and Houston camping out overnight in front of retail stores the day after Thanksgiving to ensure they could buy it.

“The bigger warehouse will allow us to quadruple our capacity for Bourbon County,” says Goose Island CEO Andrew Goeler. “We’ll get more product out to our markets, although we’ll still be far short of meeting demand.”

Once a regional brewer before being taken national last year by Anheuser-Busch, Goose Island brews some of its ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Brewer tries to challenge inflexible state law
Antonio Rizos, owner of Opa Opa Brewing Co., wants to see a change in a 47-year-old state law that he and other small craft brewers say is harming their ability to do business by keeping their distribution rights locked to wholesalers indefinitely, Masslive.com reported on March 3.

In his case, he said the law as it is written locks him into an indefinite relationship with a distributor. He says the law needs to change so his needs for getting his beer out to consumers can be met.

“There has to be a way out of the contract,” he said. “There should be no way that you can be stuck with it forever.”

In Massachusetts, brewers need to contract with wholesalers for the distribution of their products to bars and package store. Rizos can sell as much beer as he wants at his own two restaurants, Opa Opa Brewery and Steakhouse in Southampton and the Brewmaster’s Tavern in Williamsburg, but he needs a wholesaler if he wants to deliver a case to a package store down the street.

Rizos’ issue with the law, Massachusetts General Laws Chapter 138, section 25E, is that once a brewer has a relationship with a wholesaler lasting six months or ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Daredevil Brewing Company expanding to new location in Speedway
A little more than a year after Daredevil Brewing Co. built its first production brewery in Shelbyville, the craft beer maker is moving and expanding, Indianapolis Star reported on February 28.

Owners of the brewery have entered into a development agreement with the Speedway Redevelopment Commission for a 2-acre lot.

“We’re going to be building a 10,000-square-foot production brewery that will also include a taproom,” said Shane Pearson, who co-founded the brewery with his brother, Michael, and their friend, Bill Ballinger, in 2013.

Daredevil’s new location in Speedway will feature the brewer’s first public taproom. Pearson said he and the other owners are still working on the design of the space, but the taproom will have all of Daredevil’s beers available for purchase and feature an outdoor seating area.

“We continually expand the number of restaurants, entertainment and dining options along Main Street, and I think this adds to that selection,” said Scott Harris, executive director of the Speedway Redevelopment Commission. “They’re a very good craft beer. We like the name of Daredevil, it has a certain relationship with those people who drive around the track.”

But Pearson said the name “Daredevil” is really just coincidence.

“When we came up with the name of Daredevil, it ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, GA & TN: Red Hare Brewing Company expanding into Chattanooga & Nashville
Officials with Georgia's Red Hare Brewing Company announced the company is expanding into Chattanooga and Nashville, Nooga.com reported on March 4.

"We were getting lots of requests from people in Chattanooga who had visited our brewery, so Chattanooga is a natural choice, as it is the closest city north of us with a big appetite for craft beer," owner Roger Davis said in a prepared statement.

Red Hare Brewing Company is located in Marietta, GA, about an hour and a half from Chattanooga. It's an independent microbrewery that's been open about two years and expanded quickly in Georgia, according to a news release.

The brewery will sell Long Day lager, Gangway IPA and Watership brown ale, along with the seasonal line and Rabbit’s Reserve series in the greater Chattanooga area beginning this month. The microbrews will be available in kegs and cans.

Brewery news USA, IL & WI: Solemn Oath Brewing expanding distribution
Scores of Chicago area beer lovers make a point of crossing over the border to Wisconsin to get a trunkload of New Glarus beer so it only stands to reason that Wisconsinites would return the favor and head to the Land of Lincoln for beer from Illinois that's unavailable in America's Dairyland, Chicagoist.com reported on March 1.

One of those breweries until February 27 was Solemn Oath, the Naperville brewery that's growing by leaps and bounds and has fast established a reputation as one of the area breweries to watch. Solemn Oath Brewery will launch in Wisconsin around April through an exclusive partnership with Wirtz Beverage Wisconsin, marking "a significant expansion effort" for both companies. The agreement marks the first craft beer brand for the distributor (in its Wisconsin division, anyway) and the first market expansion for the emerging Illinois-based craft brewery.

"We are a Chicagoland brewery and our primary focus is here in this oft-frozen eight-county metropolis, but Wisconsin is a foundation and extension of our home," Barley writes. "It is a part of our roots and we can’t wait to bring our beer there."

Solemn Oath and Wirtz are still in the process of deciding which of their beers to send ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, OH: Buckeye Lake Brewery set to double in size
Buckeye Lake Brewery, located in Licking County, is already exceeding its own expectations. Opened two years this month, the operation is set to double in size as demand for space is at an all time high, for owner and customers alike, Columbusunderground.com reported on March 1.

Buckeye Lake Brewery currently occupies 1,400 square feet in a three-unit building. Both a brewery and a taproom have fit into the tiny space, but demand for increased seating for the pub part of the operation prompted owner Rich Hennosy to make a move.

He purchased an additional 1,400 square feet two doors down from his current lease, and plans to move the bulk of the production to that site. This will mean that 25 seats will be created in the tasting room, which has become a popular hangout since Hennosy arranged for food truck meal service last Fall.

What this also adds is the room to begin bottling. Hennosy recently bottled his first beer – Shovelhead, a double IPA at 8.3% ABV. He expects to produce several more varietals for bottles in the near future, including a Coconut Stout, and all of these can be found at Savor Growl, The Beverage Source, Brews Café, ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, ME: Baxter Brewing Company expanding
Baxter Brewing will now be able to brew and package 24 hours a day with its new expansion, which finished on March 4, according to WCSH-TV.

"We only filled about 30% of our orders in 2012, and that's in Maine and Massachusetts," said owner Luke Livingston.

That led to the expansion, which started last January. The first phase completed last July, which added three 240 barrel fermenters and included the hiring of nine people. Phase two finished on March 4. The goal is to fill the northern New England orders, and then to expand into new markets.

Baxter Brewing Co. is the first craft brewery in New England to use 100 percent aluminum cans.

Brewery news USA, TX: Boerne Brewery gets fully operational
Home to the Dodging Duck Brewhaus since the early 2000s, the town of Boerne now has a new kid brewing traditional ales. Led by founder and head brewer Fred Hernandez, Boerne Brewery looks to honor the area’s German roots but with a Texas twist, San Antonio Current reported on March 5.

The 6,000-square-foot Boerne Brewery broke ground in 2011 on property formerly owned by longtime residents Edgar Voges and his wife Anna, who had lived in the Boerne area since the early 1900s. Hernandez and his marketing/sales manager Roger Castillo did much of the interior build out, often using pieces of the original farmstead, like rock from the farmhouse’s original façade and corrugated metal from the nearby sheds.

Though the equipment arrived in 2012, it wasn’t until the summer of 2013 that they were able to start brewing. “Our equipment was manufactured in China,” said Hernandez. “Not surprisingly, it was built to design specifications and not standard engineering. The parts are not inter-changeable.” With the kinks worked out, the brewing began.

Boerne Brewery will start off with four year-round offerings, of which three are already available: Denim-Hosen, a traditional Kölsch-style wheat ale that has a clean, crisp finish (perfect for Texas summers); Willy’s ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, NC: Brueprint Brewing Company opening in Apex this spring
Apex will get its first brewery this spring when Brueprint Brewing Company opens its doors.

The owner, Chris Wagner, said he was supposed to have his final inspection on March 4 and hopefully receive his state permit by next week. While no firm opening date is set, Wagner says he expects to be open to the public by late May, according to Triangle Business Journal.

Wagner spent the last 22 years as a water engineer, working at various wastewater management firms up and down the coast, so brewing beer came naturally to him, he says. Seven and a half years ago he settled in Holly Springs with his family. He started brewing beer at about that time. “My sister-in-law got me a Mr. Beer kit and shortly thereafter I went into full-scale brewing. I realized I was doing it to get away from work, and thought, ‘This is what I should be doing’,” he said.

The brewery had interested investors and private funding. According to Wagner, they didn’t break the $1 million mark. “We were able to keep the cost down and have been able to be pretty creative. We did all the demolition ourselves. The building where the tasting room is, we ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, AB & BC: Big Rock announces craft brewery location in Vancouver
Further to the September 5, 2013 announcement of its intention to establish a brewery in British Columbia, Big Rock is pleased to announce that it has signed a lease on a vacant warehouse facility in Vancouver. Later this year, Big Rock will open the doors of a brand new brewery and craft beer destination in the Mount Pleasant area, in the heart of the city's burgeoning craft beer district, Wall Street Journal reported on March 3.

"BC is where smaller, innovative, more nimble breweries and brew pubs are most appreciated. As a result, British Columbia is quickly becoming the Craft Beer Capital of Canada", says Jody Hammel, Big Rock's newly appointed BC Brewmaster. "West Coast craft beer drinkers are thirsty for fresh, natural, local brews - and that's what Big Rock is all about."

Jody brings over 20 years of brewing experience to his new role, including six years in BC spent with the Whistler Brewing Company, Bear Brewing and the Kamloops brewery. "I look forward to creating new, innovative and deliberately different beers in a brewery with a footprint and mission that I believe is the future of brewing - small batches of unique brews. Natural, unpasteurized and fresh - the ...More info on site

Brewery news Canada, ON: Boshkung Brewing coming to Carnarvon
The small village of Carnarvon will soon be home to the first craft brewery in Ontario’s Haliburton County with the upcoming launch of Boshkung Brewing, reported on February 28.

Named after nearby Boshkung Lake, the brewery is being founded by veteran homebrewer Blake Paton, and will be located in the lower level of Rhubarb, a restaurant owned by Paton’s friends and business partners Terri Mathews and Christoph Carl.

Brewery news USA, IL & CA: Pabst Brewing Company is for sale
Pabst Brewing Co, one of the oldest breweries in the US, is looking to sell itself in a transaction that may fetch its owner between $500 million and $1 billion, Reuters reported on March 3.

Los Angeles-based Pabst has hired boutique investment bank Perella Weinberg Partners to assist with the sale process.

Pabst is also considering an initial public offering as an alternative.

Food investor C Dean Metropoulos had acquired Pabst in 2011 for $250 million.

Illinois-based Pabst was ordered by the US Internal Revenue Service to sell itself under a federal law that bars charities from owning for-profit businesses for more than five years.

Pabst had been owned for about a decade by the Kalmanovitz Charitable Foundation, a charity founded by millionaire brewing magnate Paul Kalmanovitz, who died in 1987, two years after buying Pabst.

Most of Kalmanovitz estate was left to create the foundation to help aid hospitals and universities.

Founded in Milwaukee in 1844 as Best & Company by Jacob Best, Best Brewery was the second-largest brewer in the US in 1870s.

It changed its name to Pabst Brewing Company in 1889 after Jacob's son-in-law Phillip Best took over reins of the brewery.

Paul Kalmanovitz acquired Pabst in 1985 for $63 million in a hostile takeover. ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken unveils new products in Foster’s Radler portfolio
Heineken has unveiled new additions to its Foster’s Radler portfolio, helping to fulfil the rising demand for lower-strength beer on lighter drinking occasions, Talking Retail reported on March 3.

Taking its name from the German word for “cyclist”, Radler is a beer-based drink dating back to the 1920’s when cyclists would drink the mixed beer in the mountains when stopping for a rest.

Since its debut last spring, total sales of 2% ABV Foster’s Radler cut with Cloudy Lemon have topped 17 million bottles. Building on the brand’s success and the increasing relevancy of the moderation category to young adult consumers, Heineken is introducing two new variants from March.

The expanded range will include new 2% ABV Foster’s Radler with ‘Lime & Ginger’ and a 0.0%ABV version of the original Foster’s Radler. In addition, the brand will be available in new 440 ml cans to tap into the demand for easier formats for on-the-move moderation occasions.

Fuelled by this authenticity and heritage, Radler-style beers have grown in popularity across Europe, where national mainstream lager brands have introduced variants in Belgium, Poland, Hungary, Austria and Croatia. Heineken was first to market in the UK with the original Foster’s Radler in 2013.

The moderation category is enjoying ...More info on site

Brewery news UK: Heineken is expanding its booming Desperados brand, adds mojito-flavoured Verde
Rolling out this month in 330 ml bottles, 4.7% abv Desperados Verde is a mojito-flavoured variant that mixes the original drink’s tequila flavour with a hint of mint and lime. Aimed at 18 to 34-year-olds, it was designed to tap into demand for sweeter flavours and lighter tastes, The Grocer quoted Heineken on March 2.

“Palates are changing,” said Heineken off-trade MD Martin Porter. “We have seen an explosion of flavour innovation across cider and spirits, and are beginning to witness a similar pattern with flavoured beers.”

The flavoured beer category could hit £200 mln by 2016, said Heineken, and had grown 147% over the past year to £30 mln [IRI 52 w/e 7 December 2013].

Desperados accounts for around two-thirds of the market, and had soared 171% to £22.3 mln [IRI 52 w/e 1 February 2014]. The brewer brought UK distribution of Desperados in-house in 2012 and invested heavily to increase distribution.

Other spirit beer players include SHS Drinks and Global Brands, which has rolled out bourbon-flavoured beer Buddy’s in a new 500 ml format to Tesco stores in recent weeks.

Mintel senior drinks analyst Chris Wisson said there was “no reason” why other major drinks suppliers wouldn’t follow suit and expand ...More info on site
