Tell me your genes and I tell you your traits...

ABSTRACT
Making advances for traits relevant to the brewing industry using traditional hop breeding is complex as most of the traits are quantitative in nature and are likely to be controlled by a large number of genes, each with small effects. Quantitative genetics is a method to describe the inheritance of quantitative traits. Key predictions from quantitative genetic analyses include the amount of heritable genetic variation in traits available for selection and estimates of correlations between traits. In hops, which are dioecious, quantitative genetic analysis has the added benefit of providing a means of assessing the genetic potential of male genotypes for traits expressed only in female plants (such as yield and chemistry). The information gained from quantitative genetic analysis will refine the hop breeding process - improving estimates of the gains that can be anticipated through selection methods, assisting with the development of clearly defined breeding aims for hop improvement, and improving the efficiency and accuracy of parental selection. Such techniques may appear somewhat distant from the organoleptic experience of hops in beer, but they do provide one of the tools required to access the full genetic potential of Humulus lupulus and underpin the development of the next generation of hop cultivars with desirable agronomic and organoleptic characteristics.

Brewery news USA, CO: Avery Brewing leases space at New Belgium Brewing in Fort Collins
Boulder, Colorado’s Avery Brewing Co. has leased space at New Belgium Brewing’s Fort Collins facility to ease capacity constraints while its new brewery is under construction, Shanken News Daily reported on April 1.

Under the limited one-year agreement, Avery will brew its White Rascal Belgian-Style White Ale for draft package at the New Belgium brewery until its new Boulder facility opens in January 2015.

Shifting production of White Rascal draft to Fort Collins will allow Avery to brew more seasonal and specialty beers at its existing Boulder brewery, as well as give Avery’s team the chance to train with a larger, more advanced brewhouse.

Along with White Rascal, Avery Brewing’s core portfolio includes its India Pale Ale, Ellie’s Brown Ale, Out of Bounds Stout and Joe’s labels.

Brewery news USA, PA & MA: Yuengling’s return to Massachusetts a huge success
After a two-decade hiatus, D.G. Yuengling & Son Inc. is returning to Massachusetts with a massive marketing rollout, and already the brewer has secured 6,000 points of distribution in its first month back, Boston Globe reported on April 2.

The Pottsville, PA-based brewery’s quick rollout should come as no surprise. In January, Yuengling COO Dave Casinelli said he’d be “very disappointed” if the company failed to capture five percent of the Massachusetts beer market in the first 12 months of the brand’s return.

“Not since Coors or Corona has a brand come along that will have as much impact as Yuengling will in Massachusetts,” he said at the time.

In Globe’s report, author Gary Dzen asked a number of local brewery owners how their business has been impacted by Yuengling’s return.

Somerville Brewing Co — known for its “Slumbrew” line of beers — has “suffered the ignominy of being bumped out if its own backyard, when its popular Slumbrew Porter Square Porter was replaced by Yuengling — by a bar in Porter Square, Somerville.”

But it isn’t just businesses from Massachusetts that are feeling the pressure. Out-of-state players like Brooklyn Brewery are also losing tap lines.

Brooklyn president Steve Hindy, after being told that his ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MO: Boulevard Brewing expanding internationally
Boulevard Brewing Co. is sold in 25 states, and now, nearly 100 days after it was acquired by Belgian brewer Duvel Moortgat, the potential for growth is greater than either company anticipated. In two to five years, Boulevard beers could be sold in every state, as well as in Europe, the Kansas City Star reported on April 2.

“We want Kansas City to know that Boulevard is still their brewery,” said Simon Thorpe, chief operating officer of Duvel Moortgat USA. “But the potential to develop is greater than we thought. The potential to develop across the ocean is greater than we thought.”

Boulevard founder John McDonald wanted to make more beer and hire more workers at an accelerated pace. So he sold the company to Duvel in a deal that closed the end of last year for an undisclosed price. He said Duvel has a long history of making a “very well regarded, high quality beer.” And both breweries, he added, have found they are a good fit — “entrepreneurial companies with an obsession for quality.”

Just the announcement of the acquisition boosted sales for the breweries. Perhaps Boulevard fans wanted to see if the new owners were worthy. But Duvel’s fans ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, MA: Somerville Brewing Company expands with new brewery
It took nearly three years, but Boston-area craft beer producer Somerville Brewing Company has finally found its home, Brewbound reported on April 3.

The company, which first introduced its “Slumbrew” line of beers in October 2011, today on April 3 announced it has signed a lease on a 3,600 sq. ft. space in Somerville and plans to open a new production facility and taproom within the next six months, pending federal, state and local permitting.

“This is a huge moment for us,” co-founder Jeff Leiter told members of the media at a private press event.

Leiter said the company — which currently brews its beer under contract at Mercury Brewing in Ipswich, MA – will install a 10- or 15-barrel brewhouse and enough fermentation capacity to support 2,500 barrels of production annually.

“We will be supplementing what we’re already making at Mercury Brewing,” he said. “All of the packaged (bottled) beer will continue to be made at Mercury Brewing for the time being.”

Moving into the new space will allow Somerville Brewing to expand its line of “more esoteric beers” and work on “creative projects,” like a barrel-aging program, Leiter said. The entire project is expected to cost roughly $500,000 and is being financed ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, KS: Hays Brewery produced 40,000 cans of beer in two weeks
A Hays brewery is off to a strong start. Defiance Brewing Company started distributing their beer in late December, and now they’ve taken it to a whole new level, KSN-TV reported on April 3.

“Cans have just taken off, and it’s been awesome,” said Matthew Bender, co-founder and brew master.

Defiance Brewing Company started distributing their beer in kegs to western Kansas in late December and it’s been so successful that they’ve started to can their beer.

“Being able to finally put our beer in cans, we’ve been waiting quite a while to accomplish that, to finally be able to see our product on the shelves rather than on tap. It’s pretty cool,” said Dylan Sultzer, the other co-founder and brew master at Defiance.

Even though they’ve only been doing it for two weeks, Bender and Sultzer have been able to make almost 40,000 cans of beer, which has liquor store owners around the area very happy.

“You could say it’s flying out the door basically,” said Jim Steinert the owner of Steinert Liquor Store.

Steinert says that the beer has been drawing in people to his store, and he didn’t expect to sell so much as fast as he did.

“They’re getting this stuff home and ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, IN: Bloomington Brewing Company starts bottling beer
Bloomington Brewing Co. will begin selling bottled beer after 20 years of selling primarily draft beer. The brewery, which says it is the state's third modern-era brewery, did a limited production of 500 bottles of B-Seven Bourbon Barrel Belgian Brown a few years ago, Indianapolis Star reported on April 1.

Jeff Mease, established the company in 1994 after lobbying to change Indiana alcoholic beverage laws that were discouraging to small breweries.

The award-winning Rooftop IPA will be the first bottled beer and will be available at a release party at Big Red Liquors in Bloomington, on April 5. It will be available in Indianapolis closer to June.

Brewery news Canada, ON: Muddy York Brewing coming to East Toronto
The east side of Toronto appears to be becoming a new focal point for the city’s craft brewing scene, with the veteran Mill Street Brewery, relocated Amsterdam Brewery, and recently announced Left Field Brewery now being joined by a fourth player, Canadian Beer News reported on April 3.

Muddy York Brewing is a new brewery currently under construction in the industrial Bermondsey neighbourhood in the former borough of East York.

Founded by award winning homebrewer Jeff Manol, Muddy York is targeting a summer opening, and will launch with three flagship brands – Unearthed Amber Ale, Muddy York Porter, and Dereliction Double IPA – that will initially be available exclusively on draught, with sales of packaged product at an on-site retail shop to follow.

Brewery news USA, MD: Denizens Brewing Company plans to open brewery in Montgomery County as state law changes favorably
Changes to Maryland laws governing breweries in Montgomery County are good news to one budding brewer aiming to open this summer in Silver Spring, Bizjournals.com reported on April 2.

Last week, Maryland legislators passed a law that will allow Montgomery breweries of all sizes to sell pints even if they don't have a restaurant. Breweries previously needed a full restaurant license to serve pints.

A second change will allow Maryland breweries to sell their beer directly to restaurants and bars. Previously, a Montgomery brewer would have to sell its beer to the Department of Liquor Control for it to be distributed by a county agency.

That transition, which began in 2013 when the Maryland General Assembly first took up the issue, sealed the deal for Denizens Brewing Co. owners Emily Bruno, Julie Verratti and Jeff Ramirez to locate in Montgomery. They also had been looking to open in D.C.

Though Denizens is currently imagined as a brewpub of sorts, the owners originally envisioned doing a West Coast-style taproom.

"You go into the brewery, you get to have a pint, but you don't really have food. You're not going there for a restaurant," Bruno said. "That's actually what we really wanted to do."

Brewery news USA, OH: Old Firehouse Brewery to open in Williamsburg
Williamsburg resident Adam Cowan plans to open a brewery at the site of the village’s old firehouse. Cowan said the Old Firehouse Brewery should open by early July but no official date has been set, Wcpo.com reported on April 1.

“I couldn’t be more excited that the perfect location seemed to just fall into place,” Cowan said in a release. “The layout is ideal for the model I want to bring to life. We will have an open concept where the brewing equipment is part of the atmosphere along with a tap room and ample seating.”

Cowan said he plans to launch the brewery with five beers to start including an American pale ale, an India Pale Ale, a porter, a Scottish red and “probably a Kolsch or a pilsner.”

“I’m working closely with our brew master, Ben Ramsey, to finalize the selection for the brewery’s first taps. We will announce new beers with the seasons and hope to grow the number of taps over the next 12-18 months,” Cowan said.

In addition to the taproom, Cowan plans to market kegs in the greater Cincinnati area.

The brewery is getting strong support from city government.

“The Village of Williamsburg welcomes the Old Firehouse Brewery with ...More info on site

Brewery news USA, PA: Conshohocken Brewing Company opens
Featuring a spacious wooden deck overlooking the Schuylkill River Trail and only a few minutes from 76 and the Blue Route, Conshohocken Brewing Company, which opened on April 1, believes the popularity of its taproom will grow side-by-side with its thriving, active surroundings, according to Montgomerynews.com.

“Our brewery and tap room are right in the middle of a lot of new development in the area, including a lot of new businesses and residences — we are excited to be part of this tight community,” said Ken Buonocore, co-founder of Conshohocken Brewing.

Given the proximity to the Schuylkill Trail, cyclists and runners can come in and sample the handcrafted signature brews, seasonal ales and limited small batch pilot beers at the Conshohocken Brewing Company taproom.

With 10 draft lines, the team plans to have a wide variety of beers available to satisfy different tastes. Among their opening line up are ESB (extra special bitter), Golden Ale, IPA (India Pale Ale), Cascadian Dark Ale, Pale Ale and Oatmeal Stout.

Beers served at the tap room are poured in three glass sizes, four-, eight- and 16-ounce glasses, while 64-ounce growlers are available to go and are available in two styles — glass and stainless steel.

Brewery news India: Diageo takes up legal battle against Indian company using ‘Black Label’ trademark for a beer
Global drinks giant Diageo Brands BV has taken up a legal battle against home grown liquor maker Khoday Brewing & Distilling Industries, which has secured the ‘Khoday Black Label’ trademark for one of its premium beer brands in India, India Express reported on April 4.

Diageo, which has the iconic Johnnie Walker Black Label Scotch whisky brand under its kitty, moved the patents and trademark tribunal, IPAB, against the order of the deputy registrar, trademarks, Chennai, which allowed the Bangalore-based Khoday Brewing & Distilling Industries to use ‘Khoday Black Label’ mark, for its beer brand.

The trademarks tribunal, after going through the initial affidavits, has adjourned further hearing on the petition to the first week of June.

The deputy registrar on March 24, 2010, had granted registration of ‘Khoday Black Label’ to Khoday Brewing & Distilling Industries, disapproving the opposition filed by Diageo at that point of time. Following the order, the trademark was published in the Trademark Journal.

Diageo, aggrieved by the order, moved the IPAB, praying for the withdrawal of the registration given to ‘Khoday Black Label’ mark. Separately, it also filed a petition for the stay of the impugned order.

When the matter came up on April 3, the counsel for both ...More info on site

Brewery news Cambodia: Beer sales expected to spike during Khmer New Year
Grocery and beer sales are expected to spike in Cambodia during April as Khmer New Year preparations ramp up, The Phnom Penh Post reported on April 2.

Hy Ramy, managing director of HRM (Cambodia) Group, a food and beverage distribution company specialising in canned foods, condiments and beverages, said he expects sales to increase 20 to 30 per cent during April.

Beer sales are expected to double during the three-day holiday and contribute most of the month’s estimated spending increase, he said.

“Many distribution depots are preparing to supply mostly beer because the demand of other goods has not increased much,” he said.

Despite predictions that sales will be down 20 per cent from those during Chinese New Year festivities in January, Ramy said Khmer New Year is still a major money earner for companies.

Sov Sokny, sales and marketing representative for Cambrew, a major producer of Angkor brand beer, said sales volumes had increased steadily each year during the Khmer New Year period. On average, Sokhy said he sells about 400,000 boxes of beer per month in Phnom Penh alone. This month, he said he expects to sell 600,000 boxes.
