Screening of Geraniol-rich Flavor Hop and Interesting Behavior of Beta-Citronellol During Fermentation under Various Hop-Addition Timings
ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers already reported a couple of
times about the flavour interaction between linalool,
geraniol and Beta-citronellol. Here they publish some new data
investigating the influence of the timing of hop addition.
They brewed beers with the geraniol enriched hop varieties
Cascade, Bravo, and Mosaic. The content of geraniol in
finished beer was increase by delaying the timing of hop
addition, while the yeast growth phase was avoided.
However the Beta-citronellol content in the finished beers
made with the same hop variety was not dependent on the
timing of hop addition, but was constant. This article
provides a good insight into concentrations of
monoterpenes during the course of brewing including dry
hopping.

USA: Idaho barley growers to increase barley acreage going against trend
|
Idaho growers anticipate increasing their barley acres, while the other major barley states plan to plant less, Capital Press reported on April 7.
Idaho is poised to further distance itself from North Dakota, Montana and Washington this season as the nation’s top barley production state, a March 31 USDA planting intentions report suggests.
Though Montana growers will plant far more acres, and North Dakota will plant a comparable barley crop, industry leaders say it’s a safe bet Idaho will again emerge as the barley production leader thanks to its strong yields under irrigation. Gem State growers told USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service they intend to plant 660,000 acres of barley this spring, up by 30,000 acres from last season.
Idaho became No. 1 in barley production in 2011, before being supplanted by North Dakota the following year. Idaho reclaimed its top position last season with a crop USDA estimated at 55.8 million bushels.
According to the recent USDA report, growers nationwide intend to plant 3.165 million barley acres, down from 3.48 million acres. North Dakota growers are expected to plant 650,000 barley acres, down by 110,000 acres. Montana growers intend to plant 900,000 barley acres, down 90,000 acres. Growers in Washington, the No. 3

USA, WI: Milwaukee Group intends to buy Pabst Brewing Company
|
Wisconsin has long been famous for beer, especially the national brands brewed in Milwaukee: Schlitz, Blatz and Pabst Blue Ribbon, ABC News reported on April 4.
The brewing tradition started by Milwaukee's German immigrants in the 1800s endured for more than a century, until industry consolidation in the 1980s and '90s began sending familiar brands to other companies and cities.
Now a small group of Milwaukee residents wants to revive part of that proud history by buying Pabst Brewing Co. from a California executive in hopes of returning the brand to its birthplace, possibly as a city-owned brewery.
The effort appears to be a distant long shot, requiring hundreds of millions of dollars to acquire the 170-year-old beer best known as PBR. But Milwaukee officials like the idea enough to talk about it, and at least one industry analyst says the plan is not beyond the realm of possibility.
"When I think about Pabst being anywhere else but Milwaukee, it just doesn't make sense," said Susie Seidelman, an organizer of the "Bring Pabst Blue Ribbon Home" effort. "Milwaukee made this beer what it is. ... It's right on the can."

USA, AL: Alabama beer production growth slowed in 2013
|
Beer production in Alabama grew 47 percent in 2013, a healthy growth by most measures, but much slower than the industry grew in the previous three years in the state, Al.com reported on April 4.
The Alabama Brewers Guild released its 2013 annual report. It reveals brewing remains a growth industry in the state while suggesting the rate of growth may not be as explosive as recent years.
Among the findings:
The number of taxable removal barrels (the amount of beer sold and taxed) was 28,373 in 2013, up 47 percent from the 19,301 in 2012.
Employment nearly mirrored job growth. There were 121 people working in the brewing industry in 2013 compared to 85 in 2012, an increase of 42 percent. Jobs had grown 204 percent, 250 percent and 100 percent in 2012, 2011 and 2010, respectively.
The number of existing breweries nearly doubled from seven in 2012 to 13 in 2013.
The number of planned breweries also nearly doubled from seven in 2012 to 12 in 2013.
The number of brewpubs did double from two in 2012 to four in 2013.
The amount of beer being put in kegs decreased from 61 percent in 2012 to 51 percent in 2013 while more was going into bottles,

USA, OR: Ninkasi’s second brewery becomes operational
|
Ninkasi Brewery celebrated the culmination of three years of planning and construction when it brewed its first batch of beer in its new facility in Eugene, OR last week, Brewbound reported on April 4.
The new brewery – and 90-barrel brewing system therein – initially adds 70,000 barrels to the company’s current capacity with room to grow ultimately to 250,000 barrels annually. The company’s current maximum annual capacity is 90,000 barrels.
“Since the beginning of Ninkasi, we have continuously been in a state of construction with four expansions in the last seven-and-a-half years,” said Nigel Francisco, brewery CFO, in a company statement. “Finally, we will have a space that we can grow into for the next 10 to 15 years instead of constantly adapting our facilities to fit our needs.”
Those needs cost $16.1 million — $5.6 million of which went to the construction of the actual building, a wastewater treatment system and a pipe bridge, while equipment costs totaled $10.5 million.
In 2013, the brewery produced 86,507 barrels, enough to solidify its spot as a top 30 craft brewery (by sales volume) according to the Brewers Association. The brewery is forecasting production of 115,000 barrels in 2014.

USA, OR & PA: Deschutes Brewery to distribute beer in Pittsburgh
|
Deschutes Brewery announced on April 7 it will expand distribution to Pittsburgh, PA with Frank B. Fuhrer Wholesale Co.
Beginning April 21, Deschutes will initially bring Mirror Pond Pale Ale, Black Butte Porter, Chainbreaker White IPA, and its summer seasonal, Twilight Summer Ale. The beers will be available in 12 oz. bottles and draft.
The OR-based craft brewery began its foray into new East Coast markets last year, when it entered Philadelphia in June. The company has since broadened its footprint in Pennsylvania to include the central and southern regions of the state.
Stacy Denbow, expansion manager for the brewery, said, “What an awesome time to launch into Pittsburgh – right before the kickoff of Pittsburgh Craft Beer Week! And to do so with a great partner in Fuhrer Wholesale Co, a family-owned and operated organization with core values that matched our own. We will join their Craft Beer Division.”

USA, CA: Mike Hess Brewing partners with Crest Beverage Company
|
Mike Hess Brewing (MHB) announced on April 7 that they are partnering with Crest Beverage Co. owned by the Reyes Holdings for distribution, sales and logistics.
The four-year old San Diego, CA-based brewery opened its 30-barrel production facility just 9 months ago, but Crest expects “phenomenal growth” for the company said Steve Sourapas, the president of Crest.
Mike Hess, Sourapas said, has a “great family behind the brewery, excellent beer and they’re in San Diego; it’s a triple threat.”
Installing the new 30-barrel brewhouse increased Hess Brewing’s annual production capacity to nearly 15,000 barrels and subsequently made the company a viable long-term option for a wholesaler that has traditionally been selective in filling out its own portfolio.
“We’ve been very selective with the brands we bring on, in the five years we’ve been apart of Reyes Beverage Group we’ve brought on 3-4 new suppliers,” Sourapas added. “We think we can considerably grow the brand.”
Added Dean McMillian, Crest Beverage general manager, ”We’ve admired the brewery, the brewer and the beer for years.”
Mike Hess, the founder of the company that bears his name, said he was thrilled to continue serving the area and believes there is room for more growth.

USA, MA: Wormtown Brewery expanding in Worcester
|
With the arrival of a new managing partner and a significant cash infusion, Worcester, MA-based Wormtown Brewing is expanding, Brewbound reported on April 4.
The four-year-old company — which has become known throughout Massachusetts for its bitter “Be Hoppy” American IPA — is investing more than $1 million in a new production facility and has hired former Cambridge Brewing Company brewer Megan Parisi, who most recently served as the head brewer at Bluejacket Brewing in Washington D.C.
Helping to make it all possible is David Fields, Wormtown’s new business partner and the previous owner of Auburn, MA-based beer wholesaler, Consolidated Beverages, which he sold to Taunton’s Quality Beverage last September. Using proceeds from the sale, Fields invested in Wormtown and now holds a majority interest in the company, taking over day-to-day business operations from brewery co-founder Tom Oliveri.
“We have grown a lot bigger than we thought we were going to,” said Ben Roesch, Wormtown’s co-founder and brewmaster. “Dave will help bring the business to the next level both project and volume wise.”
Fields told Brewbound that he plans to leverage his sales and marketing experience from the distribution tier, to help grow the Wormtown brand in Massachusetts.

USA, MN: Fitger’s Brewhouse to boost its beer production
|
Fitger’s Brewhouse, which takes its name from the complex that was once the home of the Fitger Brewing Co., will spend at least $50,000 to add bigger tanks that will boost its output to about 3,100 barrels, from 2,850 barrels last year, Duluth News Tribune reported on April 6.
The Brewhouse — which opened in the historic complex in 1995 and started brewing its own pre-Prohibition-style craft beer on site in 1996 — has signed on for an unprecedented 20-year lease.
“It’s the longest lease the retail-hotel-entertainment complex has had,” said Scott Vesterstein, a co-owner of the complex. He described their relationship with the popular brewpub as a partnership that has worked out extremely well for both sides.
With new lease in hand and its future location secure, the Brewhouse is expanding its on-site brewing operation by upgrading its keg system and adding bigger tanks, along with technology to increase efficiency, said Brad Nelson, a Brewhouse spokesman.
In a tricky maneuver, tanks soon will be drained and hoisted to the ceiling, while the old floor is replaced. During that time, some of their most popular craft beers may not be available.

USA, MN: Excelsior Brewing Company to triple its brewery in size
|
The Excelsior Brewing Co., the first Lake Minnetonka brewery and the only one allowed in the small town, is more than tripling in size less than two years after opening thanks to the high demand. The $1.4 million expansion is set to open next month, with a celebration of the demolition on April 12, Minneapolis Star Tribune reported on April 8.
“We basically reached our capacity nine months into operation,” spokesman Ben Flattum said. “We didn’t know what we were getting into…”
The expansion of the brewery, which opened in summer 2012 in an old 1920 Ford dealership industrial building, will increase beer production by 600 percent and add a bottling line to sell cases to Twin Cities stores for the first time.
It’s part of the growing brewery and taproom trend across the west metro area. And Excelsior could soon have company on Lake Minnetonka.
Across the lake from Excelsior, Wayzata City Manager Heidi Nelson said they’ve received some inquiries about opening a brewery in the city, though no formal proposals have been submitted yet; the city is also discussing changing its ordinance to allow taprooms.

USA, KY: Braxton Brewing to launch in Covington by the end of the year
|
Braxton Brewing Company announced plans to open their production microbrewery in Covington. The 11,000 square foot brewery and taproom sits in the heart of Covington’s Pike Street corridor – a focus of the city’s Vision 2015 redevelopment project. The brewhouse is a 20-barrel, three-vessel system developed specifically by Brewmasters Evan Rouse and Richard Dubé for the beer styles Braxton intends to create. The company intends to launch in the fourth quarter of 2014 and will focus distribution efforts in Kentucky before moving throughout the Midwest, Akron Beacon Journal reported on April 8.
The new brewery results from the ambition of its four co-founders Evan Rouse, Jake Rouse, Greg Rouse and Richard Dubé to own their own brewery and provide great craft beer for consumers through distribution and a state of the art tap room, while creating a unique and distinguishable customer experience. “We wanted Braxton Brewing Company to be the first free standing micro-brewery in Northern Kentucky. Canada, ON: Garden Brewers to launch in Hamilton
|
A Hamilton couple with strong connections to several existing breweries in Ontario has announced plans to launch their own operation later this year, Canadian Beer News reported on April 4.
Garden Brewers is being founded by Victor and Sonja North – he a veteran homebrewer who has also brewed professionally at The Ship in Hamilton and The 3 Brewers in Toronto; and she the brewery coordinator at Black Oak Brewing.
Starting up as a contract operation brewing at Black Oak, Garden Brewers will launch with a smoked and uniquely flavoured ale called Piperales:
“A smoked ale infused with crushed black peppercorns, this beer is full of familiar flavours – and unexpected pleasures. By choosing such a bold brew as our first and flagship beer we hope to send a strong message about the sort of brewing that you can expect from us! Piperales is based upon an award-winning homebrew recipe that our brewer has developed over many repeated batches and has tweaked to a high degree of polish. USA, CA: Big Bear Lake Brewing Company opens
|
More than a year in the making, Big Bear Lake Brewing Co., the exclusive microbrewry in Big Bear Lake opened its doors on April 1, serving up a half a dozen different craft beers, San Bernardino Sun reported on April 2.
The Big Bear Lake Brewing Co. is the latest venture for Big Bear Lake entrepreneur and contractor David Stone.
The microbrewry is yet another addition to the Village area, featuring such signature brews as honey blonde ale, brown ale, Hefeweizen-style beer, Indian pale ale, orange wheat, and seasonal ales, all of which are served up by brewmaster Ron VandenBroeke, formerly of the Cucamonga Brewing Co. in Rancho Cucamonga.
Stone previously contracted with VandenBroeke to brew beers for his Wine Room. When the Cucamonga Brewing Co. closed its doors more than a year ago, Stone purchased the business’ fermentation tanks and equipment and hired VandenBroeke as his exclusive brewmaster.
“I like his work ethic. He’s got very strong morals. He’s just a really good, honest guy — really hard worker,” Stone said. “And he makes a heck of a product. He’s very passionate.”

USA, MN: Gull Dam Brewing coming to Nisswa
|
Gull Dam Brewing is opening in the Werneke Water Wheel Center in Nisswa. Expectations are for a June opening. Mark and Barb Anderson closed on the building on April 1, Brainerd Daily Dispatch reported on April 4.
For the Andersons, a hobby led to sharing batches with friends and helped fuel the idea of opening a business one day.
Mark Anderson already had what he thought was the perfect name that could lend itself to marketing efforts with good humor and the potential to grow well beyond the lakes area. He trademarked the Gull Dam name. Next came finding the right location.
It’s been some time since the waterfall and wheel have been turning at the water wheel center in Nisswa. But the building, for its location and design, seemed to be the perfect setting for what the Andersons had in mind.
Now plans are to refresh the building and use the back for the brew house and tap room. “We want to be outside as much as we can,” Barb Anderson said.
The building’s front with open space and expansive loft will be available for special like beer tasting with the tap house in the back.

Africa: SABMiller announces changes in Africa business
|
SABMiller PLC said on April 7 it plans to consolidate its South African and African regions into one from July 1 for management purposes, and this will be headed up by Mark Bowman, currently managing director of SABMiller Africa.
"As we look to capitalize on our global scale and presence, we see significant advantages in managing all of our African businesses as one region," Group Chief Executive Officer Alan Clark said.
"We believe there is strong potential for profitable growth in both beer and total beverages in Africa, and, by harnessing the skills of our South African and African business in a combined Africa region, we believe that we will be better placed to access growth prospects across the entire continent," Mr. Clark added.
The International brewer, with more than 200 beer brands and some 70,000 employees in more than 75 countries, added that Norman Adami will stand down as chairman of SABMiller Beverages South Africa from July 1, and retire from the group on July 31.
SABMiller, which has the Pilsener Urquell, Peroni Nastro Azzurro, Miller Genuine Draft and Grolsch brands among its portfolio, said Mauricio Leyva, currently managing director of Beer South Africa, will become chairman and managing director of SAB Ltd.

Belgium: UNESCO considering a petition to include Belgian beer culture on its list of immaterial cultural heritage

Belgium has petitioned the United Nations' education and cultural agency UNESCO to include Belgian beer culture on its list of immaterial cultural heritage, Expatica.com reported on April 2.
UNESCO officials in Paris will have the final say, but the first signs are very positive.
It was Belgium's Germanophone community that handed in the dossier with support of its Flemish and Francophone counterparts.
The recognition procedure has been underway for many years.
Belgium's Flemish Community made a start in 2011.
It was followed by the Francophone Community the following year. All three of Belgium's language-based communities needed to back the initiative if it was to stand any chance of succeeding.
Belgium's dossier will now be scrutinised by the Secretariat of the Convention for the Protection of Immaterial Cultural Heritage.
If accepted Belgian beer culture will join the following Belgian events or activities on the UNESCO list: the Ros Beiaard Procession in Dendermonde, the Holy Blood Procession in Bruges, Carnival in Aalst, falconry and shrimp fishing at Oostduinkerke.

South Korea: Lotte Liquor’s first Kloud beer to take on current market leaders
|
Lotte Liquor is throwing down the gauntlet in the domestic beer market by launching its first beer, Kloud, Korea JoongAng Daily reported on April 7.
Lotte Liquor said last week that it is launching the new Kloud - which refers to Korea and a rich, cloud-like foam - to take on market leaders Oriental Brewery, which has 60 percent of the market with Cass and OB brands, and Hite Jinro, which has 40 percent.
The company said it would be the first beer made in Korea to use the original gravity method of production, which is used in Germany.
The gravity method does not add water to the fermented solution of raw materials, and beers manufactured that way have rich foam and taste.
Kloud is a premium beer that uses European hops and yeast from Germany, the company explained.
“We chose the original gravity method to reflect the consumers’ dissatisfaction over the taste of beer currently available,” said a spokesman for Lotte Liquor.
“In order to emphasize that it is Korean beer, we used the letter K for Kloud,” said Woo Chang-kyun, marketing director of Lotte Liquor.

Brazil: Ambev to freeze beer prices till the end of FIFA World Cup

Brazil’s beer industry giant Ambev announced on April 4 it would not be increasing the prices of its products until the FIFA World Cup ends (in mid-July).
The company’s portfolio includes such popular brands as Skol, Antarctica, Brahma, Bohemia, and Original.
The announcement came after the government raised the tax on beer and some other drinks, betting that consumption during the soccer World Cup in June and July would help shore up its finances. The tax is equal to around 1 cent an item, the government said.

Singapore: Carlsberg Singapore adds Japan’s Asahi beer to its portfolio

Carlsberg Singapore said on April 7 that it was adding Japan's number-one beer brand, Asahi, to its portfolio.
The company acquired a 51 per cent stake in MayBev Pte Ltd, the sole distributor of Asahi in Singapore.
MayBev's core business comprises the sales, marketing and distribution of a wide portfolio of international beverages, including Pravda and Heavy Water vodkas, Zonin wines and various specialty Japanese soft drinks.

Sierra Leone: Sierra Leone president sees Heineken as a friend of the nation

Sierra Leone president Ernest Bai Koroma on April 4 described Heineken as a friend of Sierra Leone; a friendship that is borne out of the fact that Heineken has been with Sierra Leone through thick and thin, AllAfrica reports.
"The war hit Heineken badly, but its loyalty to our country has been unshakable. Heineken is very much part of the historical narrative of Sierra Leone; and we believe it will continue to be part of the narrative of the rise of Sierra Leone," he said.
President Koroma made this statement during his visit to the headquarters of the company in Amsterdam, Holland. He also noted that a friend of a country acts in concert with a country's aspirations. "Our aspirations for foreign direct investment saw Heineken investing over EUR10 mln in the last four years."
He further disclosed that Sierra Leone's aspirations for increased local content in production activities saw Heineken sourcing 40% of its raw materials locally, and added: "We applaud your ambition to increase it to 60% by 2020."
