Screening of Geraniol-rich Flavor Hop and Interesting Behavior of Beta-Citronellol During Fermentation under Various Hop-Addition Timings
ABSTRACT
Japanese researchers already reported a couple of
times about the flavour interaction between linalool,
geraniol and Beta-citronellol. Here they publish some new data
investigating the influence of the timing of hop addition.
They brewed beers with the geraniol enriched hop varieties
Cascade, Bravo, and Mosaic. The content of geraniol in
finished beer was increase by delaying the timing of hop
addition, while the yeast growth phase was avoided.
However the Beta-citronellol content in the finished beers
made with the same hop variety was not dependent on the
timing of hop addition, but was constant. This article
provides a good insight into concentrations of
monoterpenes during the course of brewing including dry
hopping.

Canada: Canada barley planting projected to fall in 2014/2015

The U.S. Department of Agriculture attache in Canada issued a report about grain planting in the country, Reuters reported on April 7. The following are selected highlights from the report:
The USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) attache said plantings of wheat, barley, oats and corn will decline in the 2014/15 marketing season after slow rail transportation to market created burdensome stockpiles of the commodities.
"The large crop combined with logistical issues that slowed down the movement of the crop to export positions has resulted in producers having to make seeding decisions without knowing exactly what will be the carry-over from the current crop," the attache said in a report dated April 2 and released on April 7.
"With carry-over stocks that are significantly higher than average for wheat, durum, barley and corn, there is the expectation that there will be reduced acreage seeded to these crop compared to 2013 levels," the attache said.

USA: The American Malting Barley Association releases recommending malting barley varieties list
|
The American Malting Barley Association, Inc. (AMBA), a nonprofit trade association of U.S. malting, brewing, and distilling companies, has announced recommended malting barley varieties for the 2014 growing season.
Two varieties were added to the recommended list for 2014 and no varieties have been dropped from the previous year.
The added varieties are a two-row variety named ABI Voyager and the six-row variety Innovation. Both these varieties were developed by Busch Agricultural Resources, LLC from crosses made at its facilities in Fort Collins, Colo.
ABI Voyager has high yields in the intermountain region of the western U.S. with improved resistance to the disease Spot Blotch which may allow it to be grown further east than most North American two-rows.
Innovation is broadly adapted and exhibits good kernel plumpness in the upper Midwest and irrigated regions of western North Dakota and eastern Montana.
The recommended two-rowed varieties for 2014 are ABI Voyager, AC Metcalfe, CDC Copeland, CDC Meredith, Charles, Conlon, Conrad, Expedition, Harrington, Hockett, Merit, Merit 57, Moravian 37, Moravian 69, Pinnacle, Scarlett, and Wintmalt.
Six-rowed varieties are Celebration, Innovation, Lacey, Legacy, Quest, Robust, Stellar-ND, and Tradition.

USA, CA: San Diego Council Committee encourages brewery expansion in the city
|
The City Council's Economic Development and Intergovernmental Relations Committee tentatively approved on April 9 tax reimbursements for San Diego craft brewers Ballast Point and AleSmith that will encourage the companies to move into larger manufacturing plants in the city of San Diego, KPBS reported on April 10.
The plans now head to the full City Council for approval.
Under the agreements, the city will reimburse the breweries for the additional tax revenue the city would have received from each expansion project. Additionally, the city would give back 50 percent of future sales tax at the location, until they have paid back the breweries for the municipal fees they have to pay to move into their new facilities. This reimbursement for the Ballast Point brewery is worth about $156,000.
But City Councilman Mark Kersey stresses that this incentive package will not cost the city anything.
"All it's doing is crediting money we would not have had but for the expansion project," he said.
The city expects the Ballast Point reimbursement will be finished in three years. And then the city will collect about $50,000 a year in taxes, compared with the $15,000 a year it currently collects in taxes on the property.

USA, NC: Blowing Rock Brewing opens second brewery in North Carolina
|
For nearly a year, Blowing Rock Brewing Company has produced its artisan beers for the Blowing Rock Ale House in its state-of-the-art brewery, located in a building behind the restaurant in downtown Blowing Rock, NC, Boone Mountain Times reported on April 10.
But its larger scale brewing operation, for its bottled beers to be sold at retail outlets, has been located out of North Carolina. Until now.
“Effective this month, Blowing Rock Brewing Company is moving the larger scale brewing for its Blowing Rock Legacy Series of brews to our new brewery in Hickory, N.C.,” said Todd Rice, a founder of Blowing Rock Brewing Company, along with Jeff Walker. “This will become our company’s second brewery in North Carolina.”
Rice and Walker have named their new beer making facility Boone Brewery at Hollar Mill. The brewery will produce Blowing Rock Brewing Company Legacy Series brews, originally introduced in 2008. The series includes Blowing Rock High Country Ale, IPA and four seasonal brews: Winter Ale, Blowing Rock Bock Spring Lager, Summer Ale and Oktoberfest.

The founders of Chicago’s Two Brothers Brewing Company and Windy City Distribution, Jim and Jason Ebel, and Cavalier Distributing have furthered their longtime partnership with plans to enter the Arizona market with the launch of Cavalier Distributing of Arizona.
Jim and Jason Ebel founded Two Brothers Brewing, distributed in seven states, in 1996 and in 1999 founded Windy City Distribution as a Chicago-area craft beer wholesaler before selling it in 2012. Cavalier Distributing currently represents craft beers in Indiana, Kentucky, Florida and Ohio.

USA, CT & MA: Two Roads Brewing to distribute beer in Massachusetts
|
Massachusetts Beverage Alliance (MBA) announced it will distribute the fast-growing Two Roads Brewing brand throughout the Bay State, Brewbound reported on April 8.
The news comes on the heels after MBA secured the distribution rights to the country’s first Trappist brewery – the Spencer, MA-based Saint Joseph’s Abbey — and San Diego’s Coronado Brewing.
Two Roads, which is based in Stratford, CT, will officially launch in Massachusetts on April 28.
“We are really excited to work with the five distributors of the Massachusetts Beverage Alliance,” Clem Pellani, Two Roads’ vice president of sales and marketing said in a statement. “We’ve known them and worked with them for a long time during our careers in the beer business. To us, they stand apart based upon their commitment and track record for brand building and their rich history distributing world class beers in the state. MBA has an exceptionally strong infrastructure in place to support its craft beer portfolio. With our retail sales team working alongside of their team, we are very optimistic about our brand’s success in Massachusetts.”

Canada, ON: Liberty Village Brewing expands in Toronto area
|
After a year of having beer available exclusively at 25 Liberty bar and restaurant, Liberty Village Brewing has expanded production and will now be offering its flagship 504 Pale Ale at a number of locations throughout Toronto, Canadian Beer News reported on April 9.
Previously brewed in small batches at Junction Craft Brewing, production of 504 has now moved to Cool Brewing in Etobicoke, where much larger brewing runs can take place.
The first batch of Cool-brewed 504 Pale Ale was released this week, and kegs have been delivered to several bars and pubs in Toronto.

USA, CT: Overshores Brewing Company celebrates completion of brewing facility
|
Overshores Brewing Co., Connecticut’s first and only dedicated Belgian style brewery celebrated the completion of its brewing facility in East Haven, Connecticut with a ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday April 4, 2014. The event as hosted in partnership with the East Haven Chamber of Commerce and was attended by East Haven Mayor Joe Maturo, local business leaders and community members, Brewbound reported on April 8.
Overshores Brewing Co. will soon begin producing its five signature beers – the Simpel, the Tripel Brun, and the Belgique du Noire that fans are already familiar with – as well as a saison, La Belle Fermiere and Blanc de Blanche, a Belgian style white beer.
Overshores beer has been long awaited by beer connoisseurs around state since the start-up debuted at the 2011 CPTV Craft Beer and Chili Challenge and stood out as the third place finisher in a field of over 70 breweries, including a number of true Belgian imports. In 2012, Overshores returned to the event and was awarded first place, beating over 85 other established breweries.

USA, MA: Somerville Brewing Company building own brewery
|
Somerville Brewing Company owners Jeff Leiter and Caitlin Jewell said they are now realizing a dream, announcing last week they are opening up their own brewery in Somerville later this year.
The Somerville Brewing Company, makers of the Slumbrew line of beers, will open its own taproom, sometime in the next five to six months, Leiter and Jewell announced.
"This is a huge moment for us," said Leiter, who will be the head brewer. "We're just really thrilled to take this step into a brick and mortar facility. We wanted to have a proven product, a market for our product and a following to our product, and I think we have achieved all three."
The couple founded Slumbrew in 2011, and the beers have been brewed at the Mercury Brewing Company in Ipswich. They produce four year-round beers - Happy Sol, Flagraiser, Porter Square Porter and Trekker Tripel. They also brew a host of seasonals and special releases, such as Snow Angel and Yankee Swap.
The bottled beers will continue to be brewed at Mercury, Leiter said.

USA, FL: St. Pete Brewing Company opens in St. Petersburg
|
St. Pete Brewing Co., which has already made a name for itself with its St. Pete Orange Wheat and others, opened in St. Petersburg. The brewery was originally set to open in November, but the federal government shutdown in October slowed up the works for owners Tom and Michele Williams, holding up their Brewer's Notice application, Tampabay.com reported on April 9.
Since that time, permitting, construction issues in the 100-year-old building and other problems further slowed the opening of St. Petersburg's newest brewery. But the tasting room opened to friends and family on April 9, and the doors opened to the public on April 10.

USA, KY: Braxton Brewing Co. is in the works in Covington
|
Braxton Brewing Co. is more than the newest craft beer player in the region. It's the latest result of Covington's urban resurgence, Cincinnati.com reported on April 8.
It's the next career move for Richard Dube, a nationally renowned brewmaster who most recently was vice president of brewing and quality at Christian Moerlein Brewing Co.
It's the story of a father and his two sons taking the plunge into business, with all of the excitement and trepidation that entails.
And, if co-founder Jake Rouse has his way, Braxton Brewing will combine the craft-beer tradition with a digital marketing and social media revolution that's launching startups across the Midwest.
Braxton Brewing's advisory board members and investors include Dave Knox, co-founder of the Brandery and chief marketing officer at Rockfish Interactive, and Tim Kopp, the former chief marketing officer at ExactTarget who has invested in several local startups.
The brewery is planning to locate in 10,000 square feet in Covington and open this fall with craft beers created by co-founders and brewmasters Evan Rouse and Dube. USA, CA: Firestone Walker Brewing Company to release its canned beers
|
Firestone Walker Brewing Company is set to release its first-ever canned beers as it finishes the installation of a new state-of-the-art canning line this month, Beerpulse.com reported on April 9.
The first beer to be canned will be Firestone Walker’s “805” blonde ale in 12-pack format starting around mid April.
The timing of Firestone Walker’s new canning line is rooted in market forces as well as the local landscape.
“Craft beer consumers are now embracing cans, and that has closed the gap of perceived value between bottles and cans,” said co-proprietor Adam Firestone. “We also live and work in a place where people spend a lot of time outdoors, at the beach or pool, by the lake, on the golf course or going on hikes. Cans are a practical fit for the local lifestyle.”
The canning line is located in a dedicated building adjacent to the brewery. It will be showcased to brewery guests via a large picture window that faces an adjacent sidewalk.

Zimbabwe: SABMiller’s Delta Corp. sees 18% decline in annual lager volume
|
SABMiller's Zimbabwe affiliate reported an 18 percent decline in annual volume of lager beer on April 10, hit by an economic slowdown that has dented consumer demand.
Delta Corporation is 38 percent owned by global brewing giant SABMiller. It said in a trading statement its lager business had also taken a knock from government levies, which pushed prices up.
Delta, Zimbabwe's largest listed company with a $1.4 billion market capitalisation, produces lager and sorghum beer as well as non-alcoholic beverages. Its total beverage production was flat at 6.9 million hectolitres during the year to March.
Revenue, which peaked to $631 million last year, declined by 1 percent during the period. The company is due to announce its full-year results next month.

South Korea: Beer industry expected to change considerably due to new legislation
|
The relatively bland South Korean beer industry is brewing a big change in the wake of a recent amendment to the Liquor Tax Law, which took effect April 1, The Korea Times reported on April 11.
The revision is designed to lower the entry barrier for small and medium-sized businesses, and brewpubs.
Rep. Hong Jong-haak of the New Politics Alliance for Democracy is one of lawmakers who pushed for the legislation of the deregulation bill.
Before the revision, only companies that have production capacity of more than 150 kilolitres could distribute their beer into the market. Brew masters had to sell their hand-made beer only in their pubs.
The revision lowered the required standard production to 75 kilolitres, so that small- and medium-sized enterprises can easily enter into the market.

At the Estate Sports Club in the southeastern Nigerian city of Onitsha, men troop up to the open-air bar and order a bottle of "Oh Mpa", the local name for SABMiller’s Hero beer. It means "Oh Father" in Igbo, and is widely regarded as referring to the late Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu, who led a failed attempt to secede from Nigeria in the 1960s and set up an independent nation of Biafra that sparked a 30-month civil war, Business Day Live reported on April 11.
In response to robust demand for Hero Lager and other drinks, SABMiller plans to invest $110 mln to triple its output capacity at the 18-month-old Onitsha brewery, to 2.1-million hectolitres a year.
Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country with about 170-million people, is the continent’s second-largest beer market after South Africa, growing at an annual volume of 6%, SABMiller says.
The company, which has brewing or beverage interests in 32 African countries, entered the Nigerian market in 2009 with the purchase of controlling interests in Pabod Breweries, based in the southern oil hub of Port Harcourt.

Belarus: President requires modernization of beer industry

The Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has required the modernization of beer industry. In spite of introduction of high-tech equipment, local beer output keeps falling with the import growing, TVR.by reported on April 10.
Alexander Lukashenko ordered the government to revive the industry and attract additional investments. The beer plants are not working at their full capacity. Though Belarus has a developed industry, the share of import amounts to 30%. The plans of the government on import substitution are not being fulfilled.
All difficulties began with the emergence of multinationals at the market. A new bill will be passed on July 22, which is going to regulate the order on the market. The Chair of the State Control Committee Alexander Yakobson says that marketing and sales policy is in fact very poor. Besides, it is necessary to toughen the control over the imported beer.
