2. Brewery News
Interbrew, the Belgian brewing force, has lost its appeal to a Slovenian administrative court complaining against the takeover of the Slovenian brewer, Pivovarna Union, by Pivovarna Lasko, the country's leading beermaker. The appeal was against a ruling by Slovenian competition authorities earlier this month.
Interbrew owns 41% of Union and wanted to move to a majority participation. However, Lasko moved to acquire a 48% stake in Union earlier this month and together with indirectly-held stakes now has an effective controlling majority of the company... more info
Sun Interbrew, the Russian brewer, has acquired a 7.89% government-owned stake of the Perm Brewery, according to a statement on the Interfax news agency. The acquisition made Sun Interbrew the absolute owner of the Brewery. Sun Interbrew's subsidiary, Sun Ventures Limited, already controls 92.11% of Perm Brewery
Canada's oldest and largest brewer, Molson Inc., posted a lower first-quarter net profit because of a drop in sales and volumes in Brazil, where it also took a charge for the closure of a plant, announced the company on July 31, according to Reuters. The company said it was confident sales at its Brazilian beer subsidiary Kaiser would turn around. They were up dramatically in July, Molson said, and were expected to remain strong in the upcoming months.
"We knew it was coming, but I am feeling very good about Brazil. I expect we will improve in Brazil and the steps taken were required," said Daniel J. O'Neill, Molson president and chief executive. "The original profit, market and volume share targets for Kaiser will be met or surpassed for the year," he told analysts. Molson shares fell C$1.80, or 4.9 %, to C$35.35 on July 31 on the Toronto Stock Exchange. The stock has gained more than 5.4 percent since the beginning of the year... more info
SABMiller Plc, the world's second-biggest brewer, announced on July 30 that first-quarter earnings showed a "satisfactory increase" driven by strength in Europe and South African markets and favourable currency moves. The maker of Miller Lite, Pilsner Urquell and Castle beers said profits at its recently acquired U.S. brewer, Miller, were lower than the year before, but in line with its expectations, Reuters reported in a statement.
SABMiller disappointed investors in May by saying it would take three years to turn around Miller, which it bought for $5.6 billion last July.
Miller has been losing sales and market share for years as it battles the world's biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch, which makes Budweiser and controls half the U.S. beer market... more info
3. Malt News
Malt: Ukraine imported about 9.4 thousand tons of malt in June 2003 that is above two times more versus May, when Ukraine imported 3.9 thousand tons of malt. The main reason of increasing the malt import is the production peak of beer in summer period. It is supposed the malt import to continue increasing in next months. Ukraine is manly supplied with malt by Austrian and American companies. In the first half of the year Ukraine imported more than 30 thousand tons of malt.
4. Barley News
In a tumultuous session the EU Commissionner for Agriculture Mr. Fischler decided to cancel all export tenders of grains, not malt. Exporters can only book 60 days licences with a “dash” instead of “zero”. It means that restitution or export tax valid on day of export would apply. In 1999 the EU countries wanted to abolish the export tax, which move was blocked by France. It is supposed to be used in emergencies. This morning a Commission man told us that they want to discourage or even prevent exports. Now in the trade there are two opinions: a) offer as usual, as an export tax is unlikely or b) offer only with a protection clause for the case of an export tax. In any case this decision may puch down the internal market prices.
It is all due to the smaller overall – mainly wheat – crop, to the continuing heat, which could do damage to maize, beet and potatoes, to the open question, what will come out of the Black Sea. It is certainly an overreaction, also caused by the August holidays. No committee meetings on August 21 and 21. By September we will see clearer.
Barley: The barley crop was 93 percent headed, compared with 88 percent last year and the 5-year average of 90 percent, USDA reported on July 22. Heading was nearly complete or virtually complete in all States. The crop condition crop deteriorated in all States, due to abnormally high temperatures and dry conditions.
