2. Brewery News
Baltika is the only Russian brewery to participate in the International beer festival in Berlin, held on August 1 – 3, 2003. 75 countries from all over the world presented 1650 different varieties of beer on an alley of about 2 km. The interest in Russian beer is quite high in Germany, said Baltika. Last year the company exported more than 2.5 million bottles of beer. 2 million bottles were already sold during the first seven months of 2003. That was also facilitated by opening in 2002 of a Baltika subsidiary “Baltika Deutschland GmbH” in Hamburg.
In 2002 Baltika beer was presented on the markets of 28 countries. Baltika held 70% share of all Russian beer export in 2002. In 2003 export of Baltika beer is still growing, said the company. In the first six month of the year Baltika exported about 500 thousand hl of beer, that is 9% more versus the same period last year.
Suntory, a famous Japanese drinks producer will build a draft-beer production line in China after the establishment of a research and development center in Shanghai. The center was opened by Suntory to increase its competitiveness in the China and it is hoped to improve Suntory's ability to develop new products and accelerate the localisation of Suntory's products and enterprises, according to Yoshikazu Okada, general manager of the Suntory (China) Holding Co Ltd.
In 1996, Suntory set up its first brewery in Shanghai, and now its investment in China has accumulated to some US$150 million. Suntory owns five branches and two breweries in Shanghai and neighboring Jiangsu province.
Mumbai, India: India's two main brewing companies are making an effort to get along to stop sales from sliding. United Breweries and Shaw Wallace Breweries, the largest brewing companies in India, are raising a toast to a new phase of cooperation that will see them fight common problems, the Calcutta Telegraph reported.
The rivals, with foreign partners Scottish & Newcastle and SABMiller, control nearly 76 % of Indian beer, but the entrance of foreign companies with a reputation for transparency is helping spur the alliance.
The efforts at burying the hatchet are being spearheaded by the All India Brewers' Association, the main trade group of Indian beer companies, according to the Telegraph.
Shaw Wallace Breweries said an independent study of regulations that could lead to a blueprint for a viable policing regime is already in the works. The alliance could result in agreement on a uniform size and shape of a beer bottle.
SABMiller Plc, the world's No. 2 brewer, said on Monday it planned to issue about $2 billion worth of debt, mostly to refinance existing borrowings at its recently acquired U.S. brewing unit, under the Reuters statement. SABMiller, the maker of Miller Lite, Pilsner Urquell and Castle beers, said about $1.7 billion would be issued by its U.S. unit, Miller Brewing Co., which would use proceeds to refinance a large chunk of the existing bank debt.
SABMiller also expects to directly raise $300 million for general corporate purposes. SABMiller said in May it would take three years to turn around Miller, which it bought for $5.6 billion last July. Miller has been losing sales and market share for years in a battle with the world's biggest brewer, Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., which makes Budweiser and controls half the U.S. beer market. But as a new name in the corporate bond market, Miller will enjoy an advantage as investors seek new securities... more info

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) announced on August 01 the 2003-04 initial payments for the various grades of barley. The payments are effective immediately for deliveries into the 2003-04 pool accounts, said CWB.
The initial payments, in dollars per tonne, for base grades in each pool account are listed below:

Initial payments are set in relation to world prices and, as such, they will vary from year to year according to changing market conditions. During the crop year, the CWB reviews the initial payments on a regular basis and recommends adjustment payments as soon as market conditions and sales progress warrant.
According to estimates made at the end of July, the malting barley crop in Germany should drop by 9% in 2003. The table below, gives the figures for main German regions.
