USA: Anheuser-Busch launches Tilt- a new, innovative malt beverage
As contemporary adults across the country prepare to kick off a fresh week of happy hours and nights out on the town, Anheuser-Busch is kicking off the phased, nationwide launch of Tilt, a new, innovative malt beverage featuring an assorted blend of caffeine, guarana, and ginseng, announced the brewer on August 8.
This “5 p.m. after-work drink,” which offers a bold berry-flavor, is part of the emerging, flavored caffeinated malt beverage category and an ideal choice for those seeking something new to help start the night.
“From happy hour to a night out at a club, contemporary adults are looking for innovative beverages that fit into their fast-paced, highly-social lifestyles,” said Pat McGauley, vice president, Innovation/New Products, Anheuser-Busch, Inc. “Tilt was developed with this in mind because it is suited to a variety of drinking occasions.” Tilt is brewed with two-row malt, natural grains, hops, yeast and water and infused with raspberry flavor, caffeine, guarana and ginseng at Anheuser-Busch’s Cartersville Brewery. It is fermented at cold temperatures and allowed to develop natural carbonation as it slowly matures.
“The nationwide launch of Tilt demonstrates Anheuser-Busch’s commitment to the development of innovative new alcohol beverages,” said McGauley. “We recognize that contemporary adults have many choices

Japan: Kirin brewery announces lower operating profit
The Japanese brewer, Kirin announced on August 10, its 1/2 year operating profit dropped 16 % with its popular beer-like drink failing to boost its overall beer-related sales, according to Reuters, and lowered its annual profit growth forecast.
Kirin introduced a so-called "third-type" beer in April, snatching the top market share in the growing products that include regular beer and low-malt happoshu. field from third-ranked Sapporo Holdings Ltd. The added market share, however, failed to boost Kirin's overall sales of beer-related Third-type beers are made from ingredients such as hops, bean protein and caramel and taste like beer, but like the low-malt happoshu, they escape the high taxes on beer because the ingredients mean they are not classified as beer.
Kirin, whose products include Lager and Ichiban beers, posted a group operating profit of 37.53 billion yen ($335.8 million) for the six months to June, against 44.87 billion yen a year earlier. It reduced a little its annual operating profit forecast to 110 billion yen from a previous projection of 111 billion yen. That compared with a 109.4 billion yen profit in 2004 and an average forecast of a 110 billion

Canada: Big Rock Brewery Income Trust Announces 2nd Quarter Results
Big Rock Brewery Income Trust reported on August 5, to Unitholders its unaudited consolidated financial results for the three and six month periods ended June 30, 2005. These results reflect the consolidated operations of the Trust, Big Rock Brewery Ltd. and its wholly owned subsidiaries Kamloops Brewery Ltd. and Whistler Brewing Company Ltd. Financial Highlights for the three and six month periods ended June 30, 2005 compared with the same periods for 2004 are as follows:
Net income for the quarter ending June 30, 2005 was C$1,695,494 compared to C$2,213,802 for the three months ended June 30, 2004. The decrease is largely due to the reduction in net revenue caused by a changing sales mix year-over-year and a non-cash C$258,660 stock based compensation charge this quarter. Year-to-date net income is down by C$940,334 from C$3,637,253 last year to C$2,696,919 this year.
Net income per unit decreased to C$0.29 for the three months ended June 30, 2005 from C$0.38 for the three months ended June 30, 2004. Year-to-date net income per unit decreased to C$0.46 for the six months ended June 30, 2005 from C$0.64 for the six months ended June 30, 2004.

France: The latest standing of barley crops
In France the crop of winter barley is not entirely done in the North, but generally results are very good.
Esterel barley came off the fields with good yields, average 7 tons/ha, 75 % of full barley (above 2,5 mm) and favourable protein contents averaging 10,5 - 11 %. Two-row winter barley Vanessa was better in grain size, 85 - 90 %, and higher in protein, 11 - 12 %, as usual.
Spring barley harvest is done South of Paris, well advanced in the East, but delayed North of Paris by frequent showers and rains.
Results so far are heterogeneous, the Depeche Agricole estimates that 20 % of malting barley are lost because of lower yields and higher screenings, and at least another 10 % due to higher proteins.
Comparing with last year's record harvest, these figures are poor, but they still look good on the background of long-term average numbers.
