Brewery News

Malaysia: Carlsberg Malaysia reports for the first half of the year decreased pre-tax profit

Carlsberg Malaysia Breweryy announced on August 23 a 14.6 % year-on-year drop in first half group pre-tax profit to RM52.874 million (US$14 million) due to a decline in duty paid sales caused by a contraction of industry volume. This contraction arose from the important domestic price rise following the excise duty increase in September 2004, it said in a filing to Bursa Malaysia.

The lower duty-paid sales volume was mitigated by higher export sales, which pushed group revenue 10.9 %higher to RM571.193 million during the six months ended 30 June 2005.

The sales and marketing costs according to Carlsberg rose as a result of fierce competition in the market and investment in the Skol brand. It addred: "The highly intense competition and marketing investments in our brands are expected to continue and impact margins in the short term.”Carlsberg said the group will concentrate its efforts to increase its market share and expand its beer market leadership.

Kazakhstan: BBH’s Ak-Nar brewery announces boost in sales

Ak-Nar brewery from Kazakhstan which is part of the Baltic Beverage Holding, increased its beer output 62.6 % year-on-year to 26.9 million liters in the first half of 2005, the company reported on August 24.

An Ak-Nar representative said "At the beginning of July, the company's share on the market was 18.8 per cent." The brewer stated that US$30 million would be invested in production in 2005. Earlier the compnay said that it plans to increase production 70 %to 67.347 million liters in 2005.

This brewery merged at the end of 2003 with Irbis to form an enterprise called Ak-Nar. As a result, Kanon became the owner of4%, the Kazakh corporation Tsesna 6% and %and the Baltic Beverage Holding 90 % of the company's capital.

Russia: Baltika posts results for H1 of 2005, according to International Financial Reporting Standards

Russia’s Baltika Breweries announced its results for the first half of 2005. The results are according to International Financial Reporting Standards

• Sales volume in 1H2005 - 10.81 million hectoliters, + 22.1%
• Net sales in 1H 2005 - 449.6 MEUR, +23.6%
• Gross profit in 1H2005 - 230.6 MEUR, + 39.3%
• EBITDA in 1H2005 -133.7 MEUR, +38.1%
• EBIT in 1H2005 -100.8 MEUR, +48.4%
• Net profit in 1H2005 - 81,4 MEUR, +46.1%

The results for the first half of 2005 show that the Company continues to demonstrate success and feels confident in the marketplace.

The Company's results for the first half of 2005 demonstrate high financial and operational performance. Sales grew by 22.1% compared to the first half of 2004. The Company's growth continues to run ahead of the growth of the Russian beer market as a whole (3.7%).

The Company's sales grew by 23.6% and amounted to MEUR 449.6. The growth in revenue was due, on the one hand, to growth in volume (+22.1%) and, on the other hand, to an increase in the average price (+1.5%).

Norway: Ringnes Brewery is going to perform important job-cuts

The Ringnes Brewer from Norway prepares to dismiss between 300 and 500 employees. By this measure, major cost reductions will be introduced. This has been confirmed by Ringnes CEO Jan Bodd, in an interview with the financial newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv. The news came on August 25.

The major reason given for the cut-backs is the removal of a NOK 0.91 tax on non-returnable plastic bottles through a budget agreement between the coalition government and the Progress Party. The Labour Party has promised to restore the tax if it wins the upcoming election, but Bodd says that the cut-backs will be carried out, anyway.

New Zealand: Strike at DB Breweries

At New Zealand’s DB Breweries around 170 workers left the job for 24 hours on August 25 protesting over the company's refusal to give them what they say is a fair pay rise, according to New Zealand Herald.

Andrew Little, Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union national secretary stated that workers were seeking a pay rise in line with the going rate of 5 per cent, and wanted it to apply to all wages and conditions. "Last week the company told the public that it had done so well over the past three years that it was celebrating by shouting every New Zealander a free beer, but it is refusing to share the good times with its own workers."

DB Breweries offered a 4 % pay rise. But DB managing director Brian Blake said their offer was 1 % above inflation, and staff were on target for a 10 % performance-related, lump-sum bonus.

"Unfortunately, the union are failing to recognise that DB is considered an excellent employer by our staff and that a strike may put reaching our target and the bonus at risk. Our 10 per cent performance-related bonus is significantly greater than the value of the extra 1 ...

UK: Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries takes over English Country Inns

Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries from UK stepped up the consolidation of the pub sector today by announcing on August 24 a £13.7m (€20.2m) offer for English Country Inns. The brewing and pub company said it had reached agreement with English Country Inns that would see it take over 14 unbranded pubs in southern and central England.

Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries said the English Country Inns deal, which is subject to approval by shareholders, would give it further outlets to sell its own beers. Wolves brews Banks’s, Hanson’s and Mansfield beers in Wolverhampton and Marston’s Pedigree ale in Burton-on-Trent, Staffordshire.

It is the latest in a series of acquisitions that has seen Wolves build up an empire of 537 managed pubs, trading as Pathfinder Pubs, and 1,739 tenanted and leased sites grouped in its Union Pub Company.

The announcement came as rival Punch Taverns announced the sale of 45 pubs to Admiral Taverns for £14.8m (€21.8m) and is the latest in a series of recent takeovers within the industry as Greene King’s announcement of a £187m (€275.3) offer for Scottish Belhaven.

Barley News

Belarus: Barley harvest in 2005 inferior to that of 2004

Australia: Barley export licenses approved to Middle East

Export licenses for 50,000 tonnes of malting barley and 60,000 tonnes of feed barley to the Middle East were approved last week by Grains Licensing Authority in the state of Western Australia

Colin Mann Grains Licensing Authority Chairman said, "If these applications had not been approved Western Australian growers would be denied access to particular market segments. However, conditions had been applied to ensure that there were more options for producers and it was not WA grain competing directly with WA grain."

Any quality misrepresentation or variety requirements of the market would be exhaustively examined and if necessary, action will be taken by the Grains Licensing Authority to make sure that the repute of State isn’t injured

World: Analysts views on world barley market

Analysts believe that now the barley market is very brisk. The operators on market state that bargains made for $130-135 tonne FOB Black Sea ports within August deliveries. Barley prices went up $2-3/tonne for the week

The demand for barley in the world barley market remains strong this season and according to analysts’ views it is unlikely that its prices are going to fall much even after the coming of other traditional barley providers on the market as Canada for instance.
