World: InBev to seek acquisitions in Latin America and Asia

Belgian InBev NV, the world’s leading beer maker, is to look for more acquisitions in Europe, Asia and Latin America to increase sales faster than rivals such as Anheuser-Busch Cos., Chief Executive Officer John Brock said, according to a publication of Bloomberg from September 28.

Brock is interested in buying smaller companies in China, Russia, Germany and Latin America, he told reporters today at InBev's headquarters in Leuven, Belgium. InBev may look for purchases in Peru, Ecuador, Venezuela, Mexico and Spain, as well in Vietnam, the Philippines and Thailand.

InBev has emerged as the world's biggest beermaker by volume from 17th-largest in 1990 through transactions including the $11.2 billion-purchase of AmBev, South America's biggest brewer, a year ago. The Belgian company, which changed its name from Interbrew last year, also is introducing Brahma, Stella Artois and Beck's, its three main brands, into new markets to stimulate growth.

“The old Interbrew was an acquisition machine, but now we're seeing targeted mergers and acquisitions as a critical component but not the only one,'' Brock said. Asked if he would consider making another large transaction, the CEO said “never say never.''

United Kingdom: SABMiller’s stock boosts FTSE

Brewing giant SABMiller was the toast of the London market on September 30 as the FTSE 100 Index chased a positive end to the trading week, Ireland On Line has posted. SABMiller benefited from an upgrade by broker Deutsche Bank as it rose 4% or 41p to 1129p to be the highest riser on a day when Scottish & Newcastle was also ahead by 1.25p at 468.25p.

Bid whispers in the healthcare sector also kept traders in positive spirits, with the Footsie rising 9.1 points to 5487.3 by mid-morning.

However, this was only a third of the gains that the market had racked up in the opening minutes when it broke through the 5500 mark as investors took their cue from a positive session on Wall Street overnight.

Traders think venture capitalists are sniffing around pharmacy group Alliance UniChem and its shares hit their highest level for more than five years today, up 11.5p to 880p. The stock has risen by more than 7% since the beginning of this month.

Corporate news featured an asset swap involving Tesco in central Europe and the market liked what it heard as the supermarket giant advanced 2.5p to 309.5p following the agreement with French counterpart Carrefour.

Australia: Coopers Brewery has lifted full year earnings by more than half

Australian beer maker, Coopers Brewery Ltd, which is the subject of a hostile takeover bid from bigger rival Lion Nathan, has recently announced it has lifted full year earnings by more than half as it continues to build on its strong position in the premium beer market, Asia Pulse News stated on September 30. Coopers Brewery Ltd said its net profit for the year ended June 30, 2005, rose 51.3 % to A$14.3 million (US$10.64 million).

The family-owned South Australian brewer's result was built on record revenue of $127.2 million, up 18.2 per cent over the year. Coopers managing director Tim Cooper said the company expects revenue and earnings to continue to grow this financial year. In 2004/05, total beer volumes increased 17.8 per cent as annualised production volume approached 50 million litres per annum. "This result is clear justification for our decision in 2002 to establish our own interstate sales and distribution business," Dr Cooper said.

Interstate beer sales have increased by 72 per cent over the past two financial years since the distribution unit Premium Beverages began operations in March 2003. Coopers chairman Glenn Cooper said volumes outside Coopers' traditional markets of SA and the Northern Territory increased by ...

Germany: There is no current plan for Carlsberg’s closures in Deutschland

The Carlsberg Deutschland Group wants to ensure the survival of all its breweries by greater capacity utilisation, more efficient integration and a strengthening of earnings, Holsten posted on September 28. “There is no current plan to close one of our breweries in Germany”, said Nils S. Andersen, CEO of Carlsberg Breweries A/S.

Wolfgang Burgard, CEO of Carlsberg Deutschland, added “We have been on the right track since the beginning of 2004 and we want to resolutely follow this route. The extremely successful Mecklenburgische Brauerei Lübz will expand its sales area further and for both of the other breweries named as being threatened by closure, there are also concrete plans to strengthen their market position”.

Several parts of the German media published on Tuesday, that three out of five breweries which since April 2004 belong to the Carlsberg Group are to be closed.

They referred to an interview with the CEO of Carlsberg Breweries A/S, which appeared in the Danish financial newspaper “Børsen”.

Latvia: Beer sales of Latvian breweries increased by 3.9% in H1 2005 year-on-year

Latvian breweries sold 43.76 million litres of beer in the first half of 2005, a 3.9% increase year-on-year, according to recent figures released by the Latvian breweries association (LADS). “This year the beer market is expected to recover to its previous volume,” said LADS executive director Ivars Grislis. In 2004 the sales were hit by the effect of restrictions introduced following Latvia`s accession to the EU, Grislis added.

The largest brewing company was Aldaris, which saw sales rise by 4.7% to 18 million litres. The second largest brewery was Cåsu alus with a 10.5% increase in sales to 7.27 million litres.

Thailand: Thai Asia Pacific Brewery launches its new beer brand called Cheers

Thai Asia Pacific Brewery Co (TAPB), the Thailand brewer of the Heineken brand, launched on September 28 a new brand called Cheers, challenging Leo and Chang in the economy segment of the beer market. Cheers complements a beer portfolio that now consists of Heineken as its premium brand and Tiger for the middle market, according to Bangkok Post. The company is aiming to capture a 15% share of the total beer market, worth about 82 billion baht in 2004, over the next three years. (1 US$ = 41.08 TBH as of 30.09.2005)

Panya Pongtanya, the company's general manager, said the brewery had set a three-year plan which targeted for Cheers to gain a 5% share of the total beer market, with Heinken capturing 8% and Tiger 2-3%.

Currently, Chang is the market leader with a 56% share followed by Leo with 20%, Singha with 9-10% and Heineken with 7-8%. The budget-priced beer segment accounts for 79% of the total market. The beer market has hit a rough patch in terms of growth due to the slowing economy and an anti-alcohol campaign launched by the government.

It is expected to expand only about 1% this year after flat growth in the previous two years.

Malt News

USA: International Malting Co. started malt manufacture in north Great Falls

International Malting Co. (IMC) has begun manufacturing malt at its new plant north of Great Falls this week, Great Falls Tribune communicated on September 28. "We hope to be at 100 % capacity by mid-November," said Mark Black, a manager for International Malting, which is based in Milwaukee, Wis.

Workers this week moved some 475 tons of barley into the US$70 million plant. In about a week the barley will be converted into malt.

The company expects the plant will employ 35 people and use about 12 million bushels (261.3 thousand metric tonnes) of barley annually. International Malting has contracts with about 130 grain growers. The company built the plant to help satisfy demand for malt in the western United States and overseas. Customers include brewers, distillers and food producers.

Plans to build the plant in the Great Falls area were announced in 2003 by then-Gov. Judy Martz. Now the Great Falls Development Authority and city officials are looking at possible uses for other sites near the malting plant, an area they describe as a "commodity park." A study has been commissioned.

Part of the commodity park's appeal may lie in a US$4 million rail spur connecting the International Malting plant to the Burlington ...

Ukraine: Malteurop Ukraine commissioned a EUR 24 mln facility at its plant in Kharkov

On September 27 Malteurop Ukraine commissioned new facility at its malt plant in Kharkov, wherein it was said to have invested EUR 24 million euros, AgriMarket.Info cited a report of Kharkov Regional State Administration's press-service.

The happening was highly prized by Ukraine's president-related Deputy Head of Kharkov State Administration Yaroslav Yushchenko, who was cited to say as follows: "Opening of the malt plant is a decent retort to the sceptics, who argue whether or not it is safe to invest capital in Ukraine, and in particular - in Kharkov region. This project costs 24 million euros."

He also said that in the nearest time Malteurop was going to install at the plant new drying equipment, worth some 6 to 7 million euros, and in the further run it might build a special-purpose elevator for storage of brewing malt.

Yushchenko said that a legislative professional panel was currently at work to table into parliament amendments to the current law, aimed at maximal encouragement of investors in good standing with Ukraine's economy - those who honestly fulfil their obligations, create new jobs and increase budget deductions. One of such, according to Yushchenko, was Malteurop company.

Barley News

World: Wet weather in Canada and the EU reduced the amount of malting barley

Large new crop supplies to USA from Black Sea ports and weak international demand depressed international feed barley markets, International Grains Council (IGC) posted on September 29 in its Grain Market Report.

The world totals of 2005/06 barley production, use, trade and stocks are all unchanged from last month’s forecasts of IGC. World barley production is put at 137 million tonnes, 15 million tonnes less than last year. Wet weather in Canada and the EU reduced the amount of barley suitable for malting. Large, good quality crops are expected in Russia and Australia.

Total barley consumption is forecast at 141 million tonnes. Feed use will be lower than in 2004/05 because of reduced output and stronger competition from other grains.

World barley trade is forecast by IGC at 17 million tonnes, the same as last year, as higher malting barley imports by Russia and increased feed imports in North Africa offset reduced purchases by Near East Asia. Total end-season stocks are projected at 23 million tonnes, 4 million tonnes less than at end-2004/05.

USA: The malting barley crop is down this year and leads to low feed barley prices

The supply of good malting barley is definitely diminished this year, but carryover stocks will fill in the slack, at least for a few months, and the bushels that won't make malting grade this year because of the high VOM levels will shift that production to the feed barley market and serve to hold those prices down, Farm & Ranch Guide posted on September 28.

The malting barley crop is down in north-western Minnesota this year, according to Kelly Kotowicz at the Alvarado Farmers Elevator in Alvarado, Minn. "We lost probably a third of our crop to high VOM levels, which was rejected for feed barley, and our yields were cut down to about 50 to 60 bushels per acre," he said. "Our VOM levels in this area are running from two to four percent. Normally we discount up to two percent VOM on our contract, but this year we went to thee VOM."

According to Kotowicz, a slightly higher VOM barley can be taken into the malt house, but it takes one or two additional steeping processes to lower the VOM content enough for malting. Since this requires extra steps, the higher VOM barley is bought at a discount.

Hops News

USA: Hops shipping to Coors and Anheuser-Busch factories was started

Willamette Valley farms have begun shipping hops throughout the country to the nation's largest beer producers, The Associated Press has recently posted. According to the Oregon Hop Growers Association, Oregon is the second-largest hop producer in the United States after Washington.

At Goschie Farms in Silverton, workers are busy harvesting 250 acres of hop plants. The farm produces 400,000 pounds of hops each season.

The hops are shipped to Coors and Anheuser-Busch factories after being dried, cooled and packed into 200-pound sacks.
