South Africa: SABMiller’s South Africa beer business reports sustained growth

The South African beverage business, the subsidiary of SABMiller, has announced on November 10, EBITA growth of 19% in US Dollars to $375-million for the six month period to end September 2005.

Commenting on sustained volume growth of almost 3% in domestic beer sales, South African Breweries Ltd Managing Director Tony van Kralingen said that the South African economy had been performing particularly well, with low interest rates, low inflation and sustained consumer confidence.

“Beer and soft drink volumes continued to record positive growth during the period, driven by a strong economy, a warmer winter and targeted marketing and sales activity.

Turnover grew 11% from $1,684-million to $1,864-million, with the operating margin increasing from 18.7% to 20.1%, reflecting increased revenue, the strength of the Rand, lower brewing commodity prices and further cost efficiencies.

SAB Ltd’s share of the total liquor market has been maintained at just under 60%, while the company increased its delivered customer base by 10% over the past six months, in line with its market penetration strategy and increased licensing in two jurisdictions.

“SAB’s premium portfolio has shown strong growth. Miller Genuine Draft, Castle Lite and Amstel Lager achieved double digit growth and market share gains are at a five-year ...

Malaysia: Guinness brewery posted a rise in Q1 net profit

Brewery company Guinness Anchor Bhd has recently announced its first-quarter net profit rose by almost a quarter, driven by substantial price increases of its products after higher taxes imposed by the Government under Budget 2004, The Business Times Malaysia posted on November 10.

The Government further raised tax charges under Budget 2005. This means that prices of beer and stout will go up by 32 per cent due to the yearly tax rises. “The full impact of the resultant price increase as a result of the new tax impositions (under Budget 2005) is not reflected in the above results.

“It is pertinent to note that at present, the duties on beer in Malaysia are the second-highest in the world after Norway,” Guinness said in a statement to Bursa Malaysia Bhd on November 9. Smuggling of alcohol products is expected to worsen because of this, Guinness said. “This, unfortunately, will have a continuing significant negative impact on the industry’s turnover and profitability and the Malaysian Government’s substantial revenue,” the company said.

In addition, profit margins will come under increasing pressure due to intense competition in the market. As such, the company expects an unprecedented challenging time in maintaining results at a satisfactory level in ...

Australia : Australian Competition and Consumer Commission announces preliminary findings on Lion Nathan's bid for Coopers

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission is seeking more detail on whether Lion Nathan Ltd.'s A$352 million ($257 million) bid for Coopers Brewery Ltd. would hurt beer distribution and remove a key competitor, Reuters reported on November 16.

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission said it wanted further submissions by Friday next week and would announce a decision in December on Lion Nathan's bid for the South Australian brewer. The ACCC said preliminary inquiries had suggested that the takeover of Coopers could raise barriers to entry into the Australian beer market by removing an independent distributor.

It said inquiries also suggested that Coopers had an influence on pricing by Lion Nathan and its major rival Foster's Group Ltd. , and influenced beer product innovation, marketing and advertising. "More generally, market inquiries suggested that Lion Nathan was seeking to acquire Coopers to neutralise a growing and potentially significant brewer," it said.

But the ACCC said it had also been suggested that rivalry between Lion Nathan and the Foster's beer unit had a much more significant impact on competition than its rivalry with Coopers.

"The ACCC seeks further information on whether Coopers is a vigorous and effective competitor in the relevant market, particularly ...

Malt News
UK: A further step to combat malting overcapacity, MAGB`s Chairman comments

The significant rises in energy costs are having a drastic effect on maltsters costs, as they impact on all aspects of the business – most notably raw material and finished product haulage, barley drying and malt production, Euan Macpherson, MAGB Chairman, said in a statement on November 14.

“This impact is despite the fact that UK maltsters are at the forefront of energy conservation and continue to use less energy than the sector targets set under the UK Climate Change Levy for malt production, which shows the investments they are making in this area.. In practice, the escalation in energy prices has far outstripped maltsters’ energy saving capacity, with resultant substantial cost increases. Maltsters cannot absorb these increases and they must ultimately be recovered through higher prices.

Our lead on malt assurance and brand protection should help us to address some of the difficulties of making sales on the world malt market. However, I wrote last year that the minimal margins, or even lack of profit, that can arise from having to sell malt in an oversupplied market place is not healthy for any part of the supply chain in the longer term. The new malting plants coming into production, have ...

World: The latest USDA estimations on world barley trade for 2004/2005

United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) posted on November 14 its latest estimations for 2004-2005 barley trade. According to USDA EU-25 barley exports were estimated with 500,000 tonnes more to 3.5 million tonnes thanks to very strong shipments in recent months. Hops News
China: Hops market situation in China

The decrease in hop acreage led to a corresponding decrease in hop supply. The production volume was additionally reduced due to unfavourable weather conditions, according to The Barth Report of first half of 2005. Prices for hops from crop year 2004 were two to three times higher than those for the 2003 crop, which brought them back to normal levels. Farms were paid prices of 12 to 13 renminbi/kg for Tsingdao Flower hops. This corresponds to approx. 1.20 to 1.30 EUR/kg.

In mid-April, some 900 mt of hops (approx. 50 mt alpha) from crop year 2004 and previous crop years remained unsold. When the 2004 harvest began, the quantity of unsold hops from crop year 2003 and previous years is said to have been as much as 3,500 mt.

There will be a slight increase in acreage again in 2005. This increase will be in the region of 250 ha.
