Australia: Coopers brewery says 2006 revenue to be ahead of target

Australian brewery Coopers said revenue so far in fiscal 2006 was ahead of expectations."Our trading results for the current year give us confidence in our 2006 forecasts," Chairman Glenn Cooper told the annual meeting of the unlisted company, which has 117 shareholders, Reuters announced on November 29.

"While it is early days we are sitting slightly ahead of our budget for revenue in the first four months." Glenn Cooper told the annual meeting the company was outperforming its competitors in the premium beer segment, which was growing at 15 percent a year.

Total Australian beer market volumes were down by nearly 1 percent in fiscal 2005.The company has only about 3 percent of the national beer market, but its brands include Coopers Original Pale Ale and Coopers Sparkling Ale which sell in the premium segment, particularly outside its home state.

In its takeover defence documents, the South Australian brewer this month forecast 2006 revenues would rise 15.3 percent to A$146.0 million, with earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation forecast to rise 20.7 percent to A$31.6 million.
Lion Nathan this month raised its offer by 19 percent to A$310 a share, putting it within a valuation range of A$284 per share to ...

India: Cobra Beer Ltd to launch its lager brand King Cobra by March 2006

Cobra Beer Ltd will launch its strong lager beer brand, King Cobra, in India by March 2006. The $150-million company is also firming up plans to set up a $10-million `greenfield' brewery in the country, said Sify Finance on November 30.

The brewery, which launched its premium Cobra Beer (from the Mount Shivalik Group-owned breweries in Rajasthan) early in January 2005, is also open to acquisition to expand in the growing domestic market, the CEO, Karan Bilimoria, said on November 29.

Contending that the `greenfield brewery' project was not delayed, Bilimoria said, "Our entry into India has been planned and gradual. First, we brought in Cobra Beer and priced it at the highend. Currently, we are brewing it in the country and by two years, we will have our own brewery, even as the market grows substantially."

He stated that the non-alcoholic brand, Cobra, is expected to hit the market any day. Launching the India-brewed Cobra Beer in his hometown Hyderabad, Bilimoria said, "Bangalore, Uttar Pradesh and Kerala are next in line for the launch of this premium league beer." | Read more Finance news. South Africa: Beer industry might switch to plastic

Parts of the beer industry might switch to plastic packaging in the next five to 10 years as polyethyline-terephthalate technology improves, South Africa's listed plastic packaging group Astrapak said on November 28, according to South Africa’s media.

Taking the media on a tour of the group's plants in Johannesburg, CEO Ray Crewe-Brown on Monday said that if the plastic industry can manage to come up with a technology that will enable the shelf life of beer in plastic to stretch to 24 months, then some parts of the beer industry might switch to plastic packaging.

Crew-Brown said the group had no plans as yet to expand in Africa, but it is looking closely at opportunities on the continent. He said it is important for the company to choose carefully where it wants to expand and invest in Africa.

"We have a plant in Mauritius at the moment and we are looking at places like Nigeria and other African countries for opportunities to expand. If we are going to put money in any country in Africa, it must make business sense to us," Crewe-Brown said.

Astrapak, which has 28 plants across the country, buys the bulk of its materials locally and sources some internationally. ...

Malt News
World: Experts about the evolution of world demand for malt

Experts speaking at the first ever U.S. Malt and Malting Barley Buyers Conference held Oct. 30 - Nov. 2 in Portland, OR, shared their views on world malting and malt trade in Marketing Year 2005-06 and forecasted malt demand in Year 2010, Idaho Barley commission said this week.

Most of the demand growth for malting barley and malt during the next five years will be in countries with rapidly expanding beer production, including the Far East, particularly China (18% growth), Russia and Eastern Europe (17% growth), South America (17%) growth) and Africa (21% growth).

According the experts’ views the U.S. malt industry currently has excess processing capacity and is well positioned to meet the needs of the expanding Asian and Latin American markets.

Australia: ABB Grain announces $36.2m full year profit

Leading Australian agribusiness ABB Grain Ltd announced on November 28 an annual net profit after tax and before goodwill amortisation (NPATA) of A$36.2 million for the year ending 30 September 2005.

• Full year NPATA of A$36.2m – at high end of forecast
• Fully franked dividend of 9.0 cents per share, taking full-year dividend to 17.0c
• Total operating revenue in excess of A$1.1b

ABB’s managing director, Michael Iwaniw, said the full-year result was at the upper end of the previously forecasted profit and reflected the increasing diversification of the company, despite the poor 2004/2005 season that occurred in that financial year.

“The below average harvest we experienced last year meant receivals were down nationally, resulting in reduced profits,” Mr Iwaniw said.

“ABB’s storage and handling receivals, at 4.2 million tonnes for the season, was significantly under the five-year average of 5.9 million tonnes and well below the previous year’s intake (by AusBulk Ltd) of 6.5 million tonnes, which directly impacted on our results.

“Nevertheless, our first year as an enlarged entity, following the merger with AusBulk and United Grower Holdings, was successful with a number of highlights showing the value of diversifying our business and using to our advantage our geographic spread of operations.

“Our marketing ...

Bulgaria: Barley supply and demand balance changed substantially

“The main reason for the adjustment of the barley market trends was a substantial reduction of barley harvest,” Bulgarian market analysts have recently commented.

In June, the barley harvest of Bulgaria was supposed to come in at 700-800 thousand metric tonnes, whereas in September no more than 650 thousand metric tonnes. November harvest estimations are at 625 thousand metric tonnes versus 1.18 million metric tonnes in 2004.

Such a reduction is explained by unfavorable weather. It was raining intensively in Bulgaria from July until September, which significantly delayed harvesting. Excessive moisture did harm to both harvest quality and yield. According to our assessment, barley yield will not exceed 2.5 mt/ha this year (3.59 mt/ha in 2004).

Although Bulgaria exported 135 thousand metric tonnes of barley in the season’s first three months alone, we think that the country’s export potential is already almost exhausted. Thus, we have reduced our October export estimates from 200 thousand metric tonnes to 160 thousand metric tonnes.

The following regions were the main importers of Bulgarian barley: Eastern Asia – 59.6%, Northern Africa – 11.5%. 28.9% of the total quantity was exported to the EU countries (40 KMT). It is worth reminding that the quota for duty free ...

Russia: Overview of hop market situation in Russia

With 8 hop-growing cooperatives discontinuing hop production, only 78 hop farms remained in crop year 2004. The average hop acreage farmed by each production cooperative fell from 7.3 ha to 7.1 ha , according to the Barth Report of June 2005.

The hop acreage declined by 12%. The average yield for the aroma varieties rose slightly year on year, while the bitter varieties produced a significantly better yield. The predominantly grown aroma variety Ranny yielded an alpha content of 3.8%, well below the yield produced in 2003 (4.2%). The bitter varieties Smolisty, Podvyazny, and Istrinsky were on a par with the previous year, averaging 5.6%

At the end of April 2005, it was reported that 30 mt from the 2004 crop remained unsold. A reduction in acreage of about 10% to approx. 500 ha is expected for 2005.
