France: InBev France launches a program of reorganizations

InBev France, a subsidiary of the InBev group that specialises in the sale of beers and the distribution of beverages via its integrated distribution network CafeIn, convened on December 14 an extraordinary Works Council in Armentieres and in the various subsidiaries of the distribution network to launch a program of reorganizations that will have repercussions for distribution, sales and administration.

Within the framework of this programme, 303 jobs are due to be cut and 184 redeployments will be identified throughout InBev France SAS and the 24 CafeIn subsidiaries set up across the country.

In the course of this first meeting, the economic reasons that have triggered this reorganization were explained to the social partners, who were also informed of the provisional 2006 consultation calendar.

Once this reorganization program is completed, a definitive decision will be taken. At the same time, the final consequences of this reorganization as well as the financial impact will be communicated.

World: Globally largest beer consuming countries in 2004, according to Kirin survey

Global beer consumption rose by 4.2 % to 150.39 billion litres in 2004, for the 19th consecutive year of growth, Kirin Brewery Co. said in an annual global survey report on December 15, Kyodo News has communicated.

China ranked as the world's largest beer-consuming country in 2004 for the second straight year, according to Kirin Brewery Co. China had 19.0 % of global beer consumption. China became the largest beer consumer in 2003 and saw its consumption in 2004 jump by 14.6 % from the previous year to 28.64 billion litres.

Following China was the United States, where beer consumption rose 0.9 % to 23.97 billion litres.

Russia rose to fourth place from fifth to tie Brazil as Russian beer consumption expanded by 11.1 % to 8.45 billion litres on consumers' growing shift to beer from vodka.

Japan remained in sixth place with 6.55 billion litres, up 0.7 %.

Among regions, Asia's beer consumption rose 11.2 % to 43.15 billion litres, close to the 49.38 billion litres for Europe, the largest beer market in the world.

Japan: Japan beer industry association is against any tax increase on

The Japan beer industry association told the Financial Times it was against any tax increase on 'third beer' products and said the government needed to conduct more discussions regarding its plan to reduce the number of liquor taxation categories from 10 to four. The Brewers Association of Japan on Tuesday protested the Liberal Democratic Party.

Koichiro Aramaki, president of the association and also of Kirin Brewery Co., indicated that the industry will consider raising the price of the third-category beer if the tax hike takes place. Aramaki, however, said it will be hard for the industry to cut the price of beer as the tax cut on beer is very low.

In a bid to remove various taxation loopholes in Japan, the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) is considering a sharp reduction in the number of liquor taxation categories, a report by the Financial Times revealed on December 13. The four proposed categories are: alcoholic beverages made by fermentation; beer-like beverages; spirits; and liqueurs and others.

Australia: Coopers EGM decision is disappointing but expected, Lion Nathan said

Chief Executive of Lion Nathan Limited (Lion Nathan) Rob Murray said on December 14 that the outcome of a Coopers Brewery Limited (Coopers) EGM vote to remove Lion Nathan’s rights to purchase shares in Coopers was “disappointing, not just for Lion Nathan, but also for those shareholders who wish to achieve a fair market value for their shares, now and in the future”.

Mr Murray said: “It is extraordinary in this day and age that a constitution of a public company can be used to restrain a significant minority of shareholders from selling their shares at the best available price.

“We are not surprised by the outcome of today’s vote. Shareholders in Coopers have put a great deal of trust in the advice of a Board that does not appear to have considered our Offer on its merits and advised shareholders accordingly.

“That the Coopers Board failed to address the lack of a recommendation from an independent director and ignored the valuation of the Independent Expert it chose to appoint tells its own story.

Russia: SUN Interbrew announced the start-up of the malting plant in Saransk

SUN Interbrew announced on December 15 the official start-up of the malting plant as a present to «Sun Interbrew» Saransk affiliate at the 20th anniversary.

Announcing the start-up of the malting plant, Joseph W. Strella, Chief Executive Officer of «SUN Interbrew» stated, that «Start-up of the Malt House is of great importance both for the company and for economics of Mordovian republic. We are looking forward to malt production of the world quality level».

On starting-up the malting plant, «SUN Interbrew» almost fully covers the needs of brewing plants of the company in malt of high-quality. Malt, produced at the plant, will be used for beer production, including «SUN Interbrew» international beer brands such as «Stella Artois» and «Beck’s».

The history of brewing in Saransk goes back to 1985, when the first bottle of beer came out from the line at the Plant «Saranskiy», which produced beer and soft drinks. At the beginning of the 90s the plant became joint-stock company and Saransk brewing Company was established. In 1993 the enterprise was merged into «SUN Brewing», and in 1999 — into «SUN Interbrew» corporation. Since then, it is a constituent part of it.

Germany: German malt production figures to be corrected by the Statistical Office

German malt production figures for this calendar year have been corrected by the Statistical Office (it never happened before).

They show now a production of 1,085 Million tonnes in January-July. At the same pace of production till the end of the year, the total would arrive at 1.86 Million tonnes, 175,000 tonnes less than in 2004, but well above the 1.7 Million tonnes, which seemed to be the year figure before the statistics were corrected.

Malt usage by the German brewing industry is estimated at 1.7 -1.75 Million tonnes, therefore the net surplus is not large. The country imported 180.000 tonnes in 2004 from its EU neighbours.

Australia: Barley cash prices – the SA versus Victoria argument

ABB announced on December 15 that there’s been considerable debate (and misinformation) recently surrounding claims that SA grain growers are consistently getting significantly lower cash prices for barley compared to those interstate.

If this was the situation surely traders would seize opportunities to buy barley from SA and move it into interstate markets and make a margin. But the fact is that numerous traders have withdrawn from markets not only in SA but in the deregulated states of Vic. and NSW.

Much of the recent debate came from a decision by one of these traders, Brooks Grain, when on November 29 they withdrew barley prices in eastern Australia (including SA).

Let’s be quite clear, Brooks’ decision was a commercial decision regarding an inability to obtain new contracts and it is their commercial prerogative to do so. But it had nothing to do with ABB’s legislated responsibility for the Single Desk in SA as one Brooks’ staffer claimed.

Brooks’ withdrawal from buying barley illustrates how fickle the cash market can be. Cash benefits some growers, at some sites, at certain times.

Canada: Statistics Canada says barley production went down

Statistics Canada announced on December 14 that in a season of record production, barley production fell. Barley production dropped 5.3% to 12.481 MMT from 2004 production, due to a decline in production in both Alberta and Manitoba, that was in turn due to lower harvested acreage and lower yields.

Czech Republic: Hop-processing capacities in the Czech Republic

CHMELARSTVI, cooperative Zatec, which owns all the hop-processing capacities in the Czech Republic, processed 5,306 tonnes of hops in 2004, Hop Growers Union of the Czech Republic communicated in a press release on December 14. 38,4 % were pellets type 45, 56,8 % pellets type 90 and 4,8 % cone hops.

In 2005 the processing started already at the end of August and the 3-shift work began on 5th September which is approx. a month earlier than during previous years. By the end of November already 2596 t of hops were processed which is about 226 t more than in the same period last year.

CHMELARSTVI is owned jointly by Czech hop growers and has representation in all three Czech hop growing regions. The plants for hop pellets are however only in the centre of Czech hop growing, in Zatec. There is one plant for pellets type 90 and one plant able to process hops to pellets type 90 as well as type 45. This plant belongs to one the most modern hop processing units in the world. Next to these plants there are also traditional packaging plants for cone hops.
