Czech Republic & Finland: Budejovicky Budvar has scored another victory in Europe over Anheuser-Busch

The Czech state-owned beer maker, Budejovicky Budvar, announced on January 5 it has scored another European victory on in its fight with US brewer Annheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. over trademark usage. Budejovicky Budvar said in a statement it can use its trademark in Finland after almost ten years of disputes with US rival Anheuser-Busch, according to The Prague Daily Monitor.

"In business terms, this decision is an important success for us. It will contribute to legal certainty and will lead to a further increase in our exports," Budvar chief executive Jiri Bocek said in a press release.

On December 29, 2005, the Finnish supreme court ruled in favour of Budvar on the basis of recourse filed by the Czech brewery five years ago. "Finland can become one of our ten largest export markets in the near future," Bocek added.

The decision is final and cannot be appealed. Anheuser-Busch, which uses the Budweiser and Bud trademarks in many countries, must also pay Budvar compensation for court expenses.

The dispute started in 1996, when Anheuser-Busch demanded a ban on sales of beer under the Budejovicky Budvar trademark in Finland.

Budvar has 380 trademarks registered in more than 100 countries of the world. At ...

Japan: Kirin Brewery 2005 operating profit hit record-paper

Kirin Brewery Co.'s operating profit for 2005 slightly topped its own forecast and hit a record high thanks to strong sales of beer-like drinks, business daily Nihon Keizai reported on January 6, according to Reuters.

Japan's second-biggest brewer will post a group operating profit of 112 billion yen ($965 million), above its own forecast in August of 110 billion yen, for the calendar year, the paper said.

Kirin introduced a so-called "third-type" beer, Nodogoshi Nama, in April, snatching top share of the growing lower-priced segment -- in which it now controls about 35 percent -- from Sapporo Holdings Ltd .

The product, along with the company's popular low-malt "happoshu" brews, boosted Kirin's sales in the third quarter by 5 percent while the overall beer market shrank.

But the paper said Kirin's consolidated sales for 2005 slipped 2 percent to 1.63 trillion yen, falling short of its own forecast by about 20 billion yen, hit by poor sales at its subsidiary Kirin Beverage Corp.

Thailand: Thai Beverage will reconsider its plans for Singapore listing

Thai Beverage Plc should reconsider its plans to pursue a stock listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange for Thailand's national interest, The Bangkok Post cited Kittiratt Na Ranong, the president of the Stock Exchange of Thailand on January 10.

Mr Kittiratt said ThaiBev's decision to list in Singapore would represent a huge lost opportunity for the Thai capital market.

ThaiBev officials last week said they would consider a listing on the SGX following months of delay in its application to list on the SET. The company, owned by billionaire Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi and the brewer of market leader Chang Beer, said it would consider a dual-listing on the SET as well if local authorities eventually approve its listing.

The Thai Securities and Exchange Commission last year delayed consideration of ThaiBev's application for months following large public protests by social activists and religious groups.

Authorities have said they would reconsider the listing application following revisions to laws controlling the sale and promotion of alcoholic beverages.

But Mr Kittiratt said a ThaiBev listing would be a huge gain for the Thai market, adding tens of billions of baht to the SET's market capitalisation and potentially boosting daily trading volume by up to half a billion baht.

For the full year 2005 beer shipments by Anheuser-Busch to wholesalers were 101.1 million barrels, a 1.8 percent decrease compared with 2004 as the company reduced wholesaler inventories below 2004 year-end levels.

Barley News
Finland: 2006 barley and malting barley forecast. Barley varieties 2006

Expected area seeded with barley in 2006 is to remain almost unchanged at about 590,000 ha, H. Abildstrom & Co ApS reported on December 30 2005. In 2005 barley area was of 594,000 ha of which 159,300 ha with malting barley. For comparison in 2004 barley area was 531,800 ha of which 136,200 ha with malting barley.

In 2005 Finland harvested 2,102,900 tonnes of barley of which 607,200 tonnes of malting barley of which acceptable/accessible for malt production 300,000 tonnes; Domestic demand malting barley 200,000 tonnes; Theoretical exportable surplus: 100,000 tonnes.

However:
1) Not all Finnish surplus can be exported, as several foreign buyers do not accept
the main variety SAANA,
2) others do not want SCARLETT as having enough of this variety themselves,
3) a lot of malting barley is situated closer to intervention silos than ports and/or
railway junctions causing Finnish malting barley to follow the feed into intervention.

H. Abildstrom & Co ApS’s estimate for Finnish exports: would hardly exceed 30.000 tonnes.

Prognosis barley varieties to be sown in Finland Spring 2006:

SCARLETT 35%
SAANA (mainly feed) 25%
PRESTIGE 10%
BARKE 10%
ANNABEL 7%
BRAEMAR 3%
MAREN 2%
OTHERS 8%

OTHERS can be Carafe, Sebastian, Power, Inari.
