Brewery News
Vietnam: SABMiller plc announces investment in high growth Vietnamese beer market

SABMiller plc (“SABMiller”) announced on January 13 that it has entered into a joint venture with Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (“Vinamilk”) to establish a greenfield brewery in the Binh Duong province in southern Vietnam, subject to certain conditions being fulfilled.

Under the terms of the agreement, SABMiller and Vinamilk will each hold a 50% interest in the joint venture investment vehicle, for which the total initial investment capital will be US$ 45 million. SABMiller’s share of the investment will be settled in cash from existing resources.

The initial capacity of the brewery, which is expected to be operational by 2007, will be 500k hectolitres, with the ability to expand production to 1 million hectolitres. Such expansion would be funded from operating cashflows.

Vinamilk is a widely recognised and successful company in Vietnam, and with an estimated 70% market share in milk and related products and beverages, is the national market leader in this sector, with a strong distribution network throughout Vietnam.

The Vietnamese Ministry of Industry estimates that the beer market in Vietnam has grown from 13 million hectolitres in 2003 to 15 million hectolitres in 2005. The Vietnamese beer market is one of the fastest growing beer markets in the world ...

Australia: Lion Nathan extended its takeover offer for Coopers for March

Lion Nathan Ltd announced on January 12 the extension of its troubled A$420 million (US$316.72 million) hostile takeover offer for Coopers Brewery Ltd to March, Asia Pulse posted on January 12.

The takeover offer remains open even though Coopers shareholders voted in mid-December to alter the company's constitution to remove Lion Nathan's pre-emptive right to buy Coopers shares - a move which Lion Nathan had said would effectively kill the bid.

But Lion Nathan managing director Rob Murray said in late December that Lion Nathan was pursuing legal action to reverse the Coopers shareholders' decision and keep the takeover bid alive. Lion Nathan today extended the offer period from January 20 to March 20.

Lion Nathan said that it had received transfer notices from Coopers shareholders in respect of 23,369 Coopers shares.

Coopers - an unlisted public company with 117 shareholders mostly related to founder Thomas Cooper - has resisted Lion Nathan's offer since the bid was launched in September 2005.

Lion Nathan originally offered $260 per share for Coopers, increasing it to A$310 per share in November, valuing Coopers at A$420 million. Lion Nathan shares were one cent higher at A$7.61 on January 12 2006.

Lion Nathan brews and distributes around 900 million ...

Japan: The overall domestic beer market is expected to stay flat in 2006

The overall domestic beer market is expected to stay flat in 2006 despite booming sales of new, low-priced "third-type" beers, Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Kirin Brewery Co. reported on January 12, according to Reuters.

The size of the domestic market, including beer, low-malt "happoshu" brews and third-type, beer-like drinks made from hops and bean protein, is expected to fall 1 % in 2006, after an estimated 3 % drop in 2005, Kirin Brewery, Japan's second largest beer maker, said. The president of Asahi Breweries agreed, telling a news conference he saw the overall market staying flat or falling slightly this year.

Both firms, however, unveiled bullish sales forecasts, projecting more than 3 % sales growth for the year.

Asahi said it aimed for a 3.4 % rise to 200 million cases from its beer business this year through higher sales of its flagship "Super Dry" beer. One case is equivalent to 12.66 litres. The company suffered a 5.2 percent fall in overall beer sales in 2005, well short of its target announced in January last year of 1.7 percent growth and a revised 0.5 percent gain announced in August.

Kirin, known for its flagship "Lager" brand beer, said it ...

UK: Tony Blair paves way for extended ban on smoking in U.K.

U.K. Prime Minister Tony Blair said his Labour Party lawmakers are free to vote as they wish on legislation to restrict smoking, paving the way for a ban in all offices, restaurants, pubs and clubs by 2007, Bloomberg posted on January 11.

The move heads off a revolt by a fifth of Labour lawmakers who objected to exemptions proposed by Health Secretary Patricia Hewitt that would allow smoking in private members' clubs and pubs that don't serve food.

Hewitt herself had backed a full ban in all offices, pubs and clubs, before being forced in October by her predecessor as Health Secretary, Defence Secretary John Reid, to allow exemptions that Labour had promised in the May 2005 general election. In a parliamentary petition, 70 Labour lawmakers had called for a free vote, enough to defeat Blair in the House of Commons if they had rebelled against his party line. “We recognize that the public debate has moved on,'' Blair's spokesman Tom Kelly told reporters. ``It's sensible to listen.''

Lawmakers are normally expected to vote as their party tells them. Kelly said all party members, including government ministers, would be free to vote as they wished when the legislation comes before ...

USA: Major marketing support for Heineken Premium Light introduction

Heineken N.V. announced on January 12 that Heineken Premium Light was successfully test marketed in the USA in 2005 in Providence, RI; Tampa, FL; Phoenix, AZ and Dallas, TX. The brand will be launched nationwide in the US beer market in the on-trade in March 2006 and in April 2006 in the off-trade channel.

The launch of Heineken Premium Light in the USA will be supported by a $50 million (?42 million) incremental marketing budget. Heineken estimates that it will sell around 5 million cases (app. 400,000 hectolitres) of Heineken Premium Light in the first year. For 2006, a negative impact on the EBIT of Heineken N.V. is forecast of approximately ?25 million. Heineken Premium Light is expected to break even in the year 2007. The national launch of the brand will be supported by a comprehensive and integrated marketing campaign featuring television, print, radio, Internet and out-of-home advertising.

Heineken Premium Light will be positioned as a luxury light beer in the top of the light segment. This growing light segment is almost 50% of the American beer market and amounts to approximately 115 million hectolitres in 2005. Heineken Premium Light is brewed in the same high quality tradition ...

Barley News
Denmark: 2006 barley and malting barley forecast. Barley varieties 2006

In 2005 spring barley area was of 569,000 ha of which 49% of malting quality. For comparison in 2004 spring barley area was 575,000 ha of which 28% of malting quality, H. Abildstrom & Co ApS reported on December 30 2005.

In 2005 Denmark harvested 2.89 million tonnes of spring barley of which 1.4 million tonnes of malting barley. In 2004 Denmark harvested 2.86 million tonnes of spring barley of which 0.8 million tonnes of malting barley.

On this basis it would indicate a spring barley area for 2006 of about same as 2005 but H. Abildstrom & Co ApS considers that some malting barley farmers would have changed to rapeseed due to the profitability although returning to barley may take some years. Thus at present moment it is not expecte 2006 area to be above 550,000 ha. Under good conditions with yield 5.0 t/ha malting barley % could reach 45 i.e. roughly estimated production 2006: 1.25 million tonnes.

Prognosis barley varieties to be sown in Denmark Spring 2006:

PRESTIGE 12%
POWER 11%
TROON 10%
CLASS 9%
SIMBA (feed) 16%
HYDROGEN (feed) 6%
SEBASTIAN 5%
