Brewery News
China: Inbev is buying an extra stake in China

InBev, the world's leading beer maker, plans to spend CNY 124.9 million (US$15.5 million) to buy an additional 1.31 % stake in Zhujiang Brewery,China's fourth-largest brewer, Asia Pulse and China Daily cited InBev saying on January 20.

InBev currently holds a 24% stake in Zhujiang, which cost it only US$19.5 million about three years ago, sources said. "The jump in share value is because of the good operation of Zhujiang Brewery," InBev's vice-president for legal and corporate affairs, Frank Wang, said in a statement.

After the share increase, Zhujiang will become a Foreign Invested Enterprise (FIE), as the Belgian firm's stake will exceeds 25 per cent. The FIE status will deepen Zhujiang and InBev's strategic partnership as they will then become official joint venture partners. The new money will likely be used to build more breweries in Guangdong Province.

Global beer giants like SABMiller, Anheuser-Busch and InBev have been putting more money into buying local brewers in China. Anheuser-Busch paid US$694 million for Harbin Brewery, based in Northeast China.

It was reported that InBev outbid Anheuser-Busch and Heineken for Fujian Sedrin Brewery, paying US$750 million. That could have been the largest foreign purchases in China's beer industry.

Wang said InBev was always ready to ...

Czech Republic: Beer exports reached the highest level in 2005

Czech brewers produced about 19 million hectolitres in 2005, an increase by 1.5% year-on-year, Jan Vesely, chairman of the Czech Association of Breweries and Malt Houses, told CTK Czech News Agency on January 19.

The growth was attributed highly to exports, which exceeded three million hectolitres, reaching the highest level so far, he added. Beer exports grow considerably, with the pace at some 20 % a year in the past two-to-three years, Vesely said. Exports can be expected to grow in future, he added.

Vesely said that the conditions for exports of Czech beer simplified after the Czech Republic joined the European union in 2004. Moreover, many small breweries started to export their products.

Domestic beer consumption last year remained roughly at 16 million hectolitres, that is, about 160 litres per capita, said Vesely, adding that beer consumption in the Czech Republic would still be stagnant or "decrease very slowly", maybe by 0.5 %or 1 % a year.

"The overall production should remain flat or grow slowly also in future," said Vesely, adding last year's output can be regarded as a very good figure, as it is still one of the highest.

In 2004, Czech beer makers brewed about 18.7 million ...

World: Mexico is the world’s leading beer exporter for the third consecutive year

Mexico exported about 15.9 million hl of beer in 2005, an increase by 10.3% compared to the previous year that maintained Mexico as the world’s largest beer exporter for the third consecutive year, according to a statement of Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO).

The Netherlands and Germany have exported 14.9 and 14.8 million hl of beer respectively in 2005 taking the second and the third place in the world.

Mexico has become the leading beer exporting company in 2003, outpacing the Netherlands. Today Mexican beer accounts about 16.2% of world beer market, with an export revenue of about USD 1.5 billion per annum.

Russia: Baltika announces details of proposed merger of Russian assets

The Board of Baltika Breweries has on January 18 announced details of its proposed merger with the Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo brewing companies whose majority owner is Baltic Beverage Holding AB (“BBH”). BBH is a 50:50 joint venture between Scottish & Newcastle plc and Carlsberg Breweries A/S.

The Board of Baltika believes that the merger will strengthen the business and enable it to develop into the largest and most professional consumer goods business in Russia.

The key points of the transaction are as follows:

The proposed merger will result in a business with:

an unrivalled brand portfolio

leadership by volume

increased national coverage

strengthened management team

stronger financial profile

improved efficiency and potential synergies

BBH has confirmed its commitment to take shares, not cash, in the enlarged Baltika in exchange for its holdings in Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo. This demonstrates BBH’s commitment to the business and the Russian beer market.

ZAO Deloitte & Touche CIS was appointed to provide independent valuations. Citigroup provided the Board of Baltika with a fairness opinion.

The proposed merger, which is subject to approval by Baltika, Pikra, Vena and Yarpivo shareholders, is expected to complete by December 2006.

Germany: Anheuser-Busch now faces a legal challenge from Bitburger Brauerei

USA’s largest beer maker, Anheuser-Busch Cos., which has fought a Czech competitor over the Budweiser and Bud names for decades, now faces a legal challenge from the German brewer, Bitburger Brauerei, Bloomberg posted on January 17.

Based in the German town of Bitburg, Bitburger Brauerei, wants the European Union's trademark office to annul the Anheuser Busch Bud and American Bud trademarks.

Anheuser Busch Bud “is difficult to pronounce, especially after drinking beer'' and so consumers tend to shorten it to “Bud,'' the brewer said in documents at the European Court of First Instance in Luxembourg on January 17. When ordering in noisy bars, the use of “Bud'' can lead to confusion over Bitburger's trademark “Bit,'' the brewer said.

Bitburger has about 5 % of the German beer market compared with market leader Inbev NV's 12 percent, said Marcel Hooijmaijers, an analyst at Kepler Equities in Amsterdam.

St. Louis, Missouri-based Anheuser-Busch said there's no risk of confusion, arguing that the German pronunciation of “Bit'' and ”Bud'' are completely different. In addition, most beer is bought at stores and consumed at home, away from noisy bars where consumers have to shout to order drinks, the company said. A ruling is expected this ...

Malt News
UK: United Kingdom malt scheme gains international recognition

Assured UK Malt (AUKM), an accreditation scheme, was launched two years ago by the Maltsters' Association of Great Britain in a bid to give brewers and distillers confidence about the supplies they were receiving from group's members, Food Production Daily published on January 18.

The scheme was set up to help the tracking and traceability procedures to help ensure food safety. New laws on traceability went into effect throughout the EU on 1 January. "Traceability has become very important in the EU," an AUKM spokesperson told FoodProductionDaily.com. "There are other schemes for assuring grain, so we decided to create the scheme for assuring malt as the next step to help our customers."

The scheme requires malt suppliers to follow hygienic food safety practices. They must be able trace the origin of the grain through the supply chain and guarantee it is not contaminated. The AUKM service has since expanded its service to include programmes on legality, good operational practice and product quality.

Recently, AUKM received accreditation from the International Accreditation Forum as a registered vetter of malt manufacturers. Accreditation reduces risk for business and its customers by assuring them that the vetting organisation is competent to carry out the work they undertake.

Hungary:Weissheimer is seeking bankruptcy protection

Weissheimer Malzfabrik's Albadomu Bt, Hungary's largest malt producer, is seeking bankruptcy protection as the company is struggling to pay off debts to suppliers, amounting to Ft 6.6 billion(26.5 Mio euro), daily Nepszabadsag reported. Albadomu's troubles started early last year when its owner, the German Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik overstretched itself by buying the malt processing plant of Borsod Brewery Rt while upgrades at two of its existing plants were already underway. The company's management is set to meet debtors on Monday to settle the issue, but the latter signaled it would file criminal charges against Albadomu if a deal is not reached, claiming that it had siphoned off the suppliers' money into offshore companies.

Barley News
Australia: ABB Grain Ltd cuts barley pool outlooks by A$2/tonne

ABB Grain Ltd announced on January 18 it has reviewed its gross barley pool indicators for 2005/2006 and has reduced both its malting and feed barley estimates by A$2/tonne.

The slight adjustment means that the new indicator prices are A$193/t for malting barley in the Victorian No.1 malting barley pool which closed on October 31, and A$168/t for feed barley in the Victorian No.1 pool. In the east coast pool (Victoria, NSW and Queensland) the gross barley pool indicators for 2005/2006 are A$188/t for malting barley No.2 and A$163/t for feed barley No.2.

The slight adjustment means as well that the new indicator prices are A$188/t for malting barley and A$163/t for feed barley for SA. But a $5/t premium applies to Baudin and Sloop malting varieties, although this is the last season in which this premium will apply.

ABB’s general manager marketing, Nigel Officer, said that reduced commodity prices for barley in international markets and recent currency appreciation were responsible for the amended estimates.

“There has been a fall in international malting barley prices of around 5% since late December which has influenced our revised estimates,” Mr Officer said.

“This fall has been largely driven by other exporters of Australian barley from deregulated markets ...
