Brewery News
China: China Resources Snow Breweries CR Snow acquired the first brewery in Fujian Province

China Resources Snow Breweries Limited (or “CR Snow”), a subsidiary of China Resources Enterprise, Limited (or the “Company”) (HKEx: 0291) and a joint venture with SABMiller plc, announced that it has acquired a total 85% interest in “Quanzhou Qingyuan Brewery Limited” (“Qingyuan Brewery”) for an estimated RMB72 million. The residual 15% is owned by (“Q.F.G.C. (Limited)”).

The consideration for the acquisition will be based on the appraised net asset value of Qingyuan Brewery to be determined after due diligence, which is expected to be about RMB85 million. Qingyuan Brewery had a net debt of RMB42 million as at 30 September 2005. The annual production capacity of the brewery is 118,000 kilolitres, and could be increased to 280,000 kilolitres after upgrade for an additional RMB65 million investment. The major product line for Qingyuan Brewery is its “Qingyuan” series of beer, distributed for sales mainly in the Quanzhou area.

Quanzhou, a major coastal city with a population of over 7 million people, is located at the southeast coastal area of Fujian Province. Total beer sales of Fujian Province was 1.35 million kilolitres in 2004, while annual consumption per capita was 39 litres, far exceeding the per capita level of 23 litres on a ...

Russia: Beer production to grow 5%-7% in 2006 - forecast

Beer production will grow by 5%-7% in Russia in 2006, the same level as in 2005, Vyacheslav Mamontov, chairman of the executive committee of the Russian Brewers' Union, said at a press conference on Monday, February in Moscow, according to Interfax.

"The main reason behind the growth is the social and economic condition of most beer consumers," he said. "Beer consumption is higher, for example, in the central region, where people are better able to afford it. This figure is lower of course in the subsidized regions," he said.

Russians consumed an average of more than 60 liters of beer per person in 2005, the Brewers' Union said. However, Russia is still in 20th place in beer consumption in the world.

The slowdown in the growth of beer production is also tied to the government's excise policy, which puts restrictions on advertisements and increases transport costs, Viktor Pyatko, vice president of the Heineken group of companies, said at the press conference.

The Brewers' Union has prepared a social report on the brewing industry for the first time and has come up with an initiative to distribute stickers with information about the ban on beer sales to minors, Mamontov said. "These ...

Mexico & USA: Grupo Modelo - the top seller among U.S. imports since 1997

The largest beer maker in Mexico and biggest beer importer into the United States should put Mexico's Grupo Modelo in an enviable position, Miami Herald commented on February 4.

Grupo Modelo's trendy Corona Extra beer has been the top seller among U.S. imports since 1997, the year the Mexican brew unseated its Dutch rival, Heineken, also a lager. ''It's true that Corona Extra is the imported beer with the highest sales in the United States,'' said Jorge Siegrist P., a Grupo Modelo spokesman. “Still, other brands from our group are also experiencing success in the U.S. market.''

However, Grupo Modelo faces competition at home from Grupo Femsa, maker of Tecate and Dos Equis beers.

In the United States, domestic beer sales are flat in the face of a growing American taste for wine and spirits, although imports are still rising at a moderate pace. But Modelo, which is partially owned by U.S. brewing giant Anheuser-Busch, is optimistic its dominance will continue. Not only has it got other brands waiting in the wings to sell in the United States, it also wants to conquer the world.

Modelo Especial is the sixth most favored beer import in the United States and Corona Light is ...

Japan: Asahi Breweries and Sapporo Holdings upgraded by Standard & Poor's

Standard & Poor's said on January 6 it has upgraded its long-term ratings on Asahi Breweries Ltd. and Sapporo Holdings Ltd., citing improved profitability in their alcoholic beverage businesses and continuous debt shrinking efforts, Kyodo News posted on February 6.

The U.S. credit-rating agency also revised its rating outlook on Kirin Brewery Co. to stable from negative after its strong business performance in the first three quarters of fiscal 2005.

The agency raised its long-term corporate credit rating on Asahi to A-minus from BBB-plus, and that on Sapporo to BB from BB-minus. The outlooks on the new ratings are stable. It assigned an AA-minus as Kirin's long-term rating.

S&P noted the rating or outlook on Asahi could be further revised upward if the company is able to diversify its businesses into nonalcoholic beverages and strengthen its cash flow generation.

On Sapporo, the agency said the company's profitability and cash flow will be affected by the probable future introduction of a large tax hike on low-alcohol beverages since the company relies heavily on its "Draft One" low-alcohol beverage for its earnings.

But this could be offset by beefing up Sapporo's position in the premium beer market and reinforcing its cash flow from ...

Thailand: Brokers call for authorities to approve ThaiBev's entry on SET

Local securities brokers and fund managers urged on Friday, February 3, the Securities and Exchange Commission to approve the application of Thai Beverages to list on the local stock market, The Bangkok Post communicated on February 4.

The Federation of Thai Capital Market Organisations, led by chairman Kongkiat Opaswongkarn, yesterday met with SEC secretary-general Thirachai Phuvanatnaranubala to show their support for the ThaiBev listing.

Regulators have delayed consideration of the listing until formal passage of a new alcoholic beverage law. Dozens of religious and social groups have protested against the listing on moral grounds.

ThaiBev, a giant holding company controlled by Charoen Sirivadhanabhakdi, is the producer of market leader Chang Beer, Mekhong rum and dozens of other spirits and whiskies. The company has said that it would seek a listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange if its application to the SET is rejected. Dr Kongkiat said that ThaiBev, with sales of 90 billion baht, paid taxes totalling 50 billion baht each year, equal to 5% of total government tax receipts.

Allowing the company to list on the Singapore exchange would result in the SET losing the chance to boost its market capitalisation by as much as 200 billion baht, he said. Local brokers ...

Malt News
EU: EU malt exporters fixed licences for shipments of 1.21 million tonnes

EU malt exporters fixed licences for shipments of 1.210 million tonnes from July 1, 2005 until January 24, 2006, 118,000 tonnes less than a year ago. But converted to a year figure, bookings could reach 2.170 million tonnes, only 50,000 tonnes less than in 2004/05. Last year, fixations fell sharply in the latter half of the campaign.

Pessimistic expectations earlier in the crop year had put EU malt exports as low as 1.8 million tonnes. This seems to be wrong by now, and it can be hoped that losses versus the year before will not be too great. Quantity losses to Russia and Japan were at least partly compensated by larger deliveries to South America, Africa and Southeast Asia.

Russia: SUN Interbrew to construct malt-house in Siberia

SUN Interbrew is planning to construct a malt-house in Angarsk, South Siberian Russia, on the Angara River, AK&M Analytical Information Agency of Russia cited Company's President Joseph Strella reporting to journalists. The malting plant will supply the raw materials for a new brewery the first production line of which with a capacity of 2 million hl will be launched in 2008.

SUN Interbrew founded in 1999 is one of the biggest breweries in Russia and the largest in Ukraine. SUN Interbrew produces the beer in Russia under the brands Stella Artois, Beck's, Staropramen, Brahma, Hoegaarden, "Klinskoye", "Sibirskaya korona", "Tolstyak", "Volzhanin", "Rifey", "Permskoye Gubernskoye", "Bag Beer", "Pikur", "Premier", "Stalingradskoye" and "Piterskoye", and in Ukraine - Stella Artois, Beck's, ?aller, "Chernigovskoye", "Rogan" and "Yantar".

Barley News
UK: New malting barley varieties could gain market share quickly, according to experts

With over 80% of Scottish malting barley supplied by three ageing varieties – Chalice, Decanter and Optic, advances in breeding techniques mean new varieties could gain market share quickly, said Baird’s Malt’s Eddie Douglas, according to Farmers Weekly Interactive statement from February 7. “We need varieties that can give us good, sound grain quality and excellent malting potential.”

The Scottish Agricultural College’s cereals specialist, Steve Hoad expects the main new contenders to be Oxbridge, Troon, Westminster, Tipple and Appoloosa.

“Appoloosa, which is currently under test for provisional IoB [Institute of Brewing] approval, yields 10% more than Optic and, despite being (like Optic) weak on Rhynchosporium, could find favour among the distillers due to its low GN [glycosidic nitrile] level,” he noted.

“Malt distillers now require high hot water extract and spirit yield, whilst grain distillers require high enzyme potential – but both need non-GN producers,” explained Nickerson’s Mark Glew. He says that Oxbridge, which is provisionally approved by the IoB, is a non GN producer and yielded 105% on the SAC Recommended List, compared to 99% for Optic.

The variety also offers good disease resistance - rated seven for mildew and Rhynchosporium and also scores eight for brackling, he said.

“Overall, growers need a clear ...
