Brewery News
Czech Republic: Staropramen brewery to merge Prague units, close Branik

Pivovary Staropramen, Czech beer producer, will close down its Prague-based unit Branik in the first quarter of 2007 and transfer its production to Staropramen, Pivovary Staropramen told CTK on February 24.

The move will require some 80 job cuts. Staropramen, also based in Prague, will take over production technologies from Branik and will be modernised with investment exceeding EUR 20 million (CZK 570 million).

"The Branik brewery has reached the maximum of its capacity and a further modernisation of the facility is not possible given its location and the fact that it is a national cultural heritage site," Pivovary Staropramen production and technical director Frantisek Samal said.

The Branik premises will probably be sold, Pivovary Staropramen spokeswoman Michaela Tryznova said.

Pivovary Staropramen operates three production units in the Czech Republic, namely Staropramen, Branik and Ostravar, and a distribution centre in Prague at present. Its parent company InBev plans to establish a centre in the Czech Republic this year for export activities for several European countries. It should give rise to more than 100 jobs.

InBev said today it wanted to create 295 new jobs in the Czech Republic and Hungary and cancel 360 jobs in western Europe within restructuring of ...

Hong Kong: San Miguel HK recorded 63.5 % increase in operating income

San Miguel Brewery Hong Kong Ltd. reported on February 27 a 2005 consolidated gross revenue of HK$1.27 billion, compared with HK$1.26 billion in 2004. Gross revenue in Hong Kong grew 1.0 percent to HK$704 million and gross revenue in mainland China remained stable at HK$564 million, it said, according to INQ7.net.

Hong Kong operations recorded a 63.5 % increase in operating income to HK$15.2 million, the company said. Flagship brand "San Miguel" retained its standing as the leading beer brand in Hong Kong, it said.

San Miguel is the largest player in the Hong Kong beer market with total market share of about 29 percent.

Commenting on the company's China strategy, San Miguel president and chief operating officer Ramon Ang said, "Our priority in our China operations is to gain momentum and improve competitiveness and build on buoyant demand for our highly popular local brand."

Malaysia: Early Chinese New Year helps Guinness Anchor Berhad interim results improve marginally

Guinness Anchor Berhad (GAB) posted on February 21 a marginal 2.7 % increase in group revenue to RM559.495 million for the half year ended 31 December 2005 from RM544.783 million in the preceding corresponding period.

Group pre-tax profit for the half year increased by 14.6 percent to RM91.978 million from RM80.288 million for the half year ended 31 December 2004 while net profit improved by 14.3 percent to RM66.247 million from RM57.945 million previously.

For the quarter ended 31 December 2005, group revenue was down 2.9 percent to RM254.863 million over the preceding corresponding quarter while pre-tax profit showed a slight improvement of 4.6 percent to RM41.464 million.

GAB Managing Director Theo de Rond said, although pre-tax and net profit for the half year were higher, this was largely due to stocking up by the market in preparation for the early Chinese New Year. He, however, noted that revenue for the last three months of 2005 was much lower and this was a clear reflection of the impact of consecutive duty hikes imposed by the Government on the industry.

“From Budget 2004 to Budget 2006, we have had three consecutive years of duty increases resulting in substantially higher beer and stout prices and lower ...

India & Japan: Sapporo Breweries is eyeing Indian beer market

Sapporo Breweries Ltd., one of the leading Japanese beer makers, is planning to enter India market in the near future. An official from Sapporo is expected to visit India during the third week of March to explore opportunities in the country, according to Business Line. Sapporo Breweries is either to create a joint venture or to acquire breweries in the country, Sify Business News posted on February 25.

"Nobody wants to miss out on one of the fastest growing markets in the world," a consultant with the beer industry said. The official is expected to hold meetings with major beer companies in India before finalising plans for the company's foray into the country, sources said.

Sapporo's trump card to make an immediate presence in the country could be its `third beer' brand, Draft One, a beer-like low-alcohol beverage, which it might bring into India, though it could still face competition from the country's booming strong beer market.

While beer is made from malt, third beers use pea or soy protein or soy peptide and have light and crisp taste. They have found an instant market in Japan beating even mainstream beer brands there. At the same time, sales of the big ...

Chile & Argentina: CCU S.A. reports consolidated fourth quarter 2005 and full year results

Compania Cervecerias Unidas S.A. (CCU) announced on February 28 its consolidated financial results, stated in Chilean GAAP for the fourth quarter and full year ended December 31, 2005. For the forth quarter revenues up 13.4%, Operating Income increased 9.7%, EBITDA(1) up 7.3%,
Net Income decreased 20.6% to US$0.59 per ADR. All US dollar figures are based on the exchange rate effective December 31, 2005 (US$1.00 = Ch$512.50).

CCU also had a positive fourth quarter of 2005. Consolidated revenues grew by 13.4%, operating income increased 9.7% and EBITDA grew by 7.3%. These good results are attributable to higher volumes and prices in almost all of our business segments. The increases in volumes were partially attributable to the higher investment in marketing, which reflects CCU’s commitment to compete through the creation of brand value in order to ensure the long-term sustainability of the Company.

All business segments improved their results during Q4’05, with the exception of wine. Without considering Viña San Pedro (VSP), affected by the appreciation of ...

Barley News
Canada: First CWB PRO for 2006-07 range from C$1 to C$5 per tonne lower for malting barley

The CWB released on February 27 its first Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2006-07 crop year. The 2006-2007 feed barley PRO (Pool A) is down C$12 per tonne, while malting barley PROs range from C$1 to C$5 per tonne lower, compared to the February PRO for the 2005-06 crop year.

Feed barley
Global feed barley import demand is projected to decline in 2006-07, due primarily to increased barley production in North Africa and the Middle East. Barley production is also projected to increase in the Black Sea region, as Ukraine and Russia are expected to increase spring barley area due to greatly reduced winter wheat area. Burdensome Australian barley supplies are expected to weigh on export values over the next number of months until its supply situation eases. Barley production in the European Union is expected to increase, but the EU has not been aggressive in subsidizing exports. Canada's potential for feed barley exports will be influenced by the volume of the Canadian domestic crop, ocean freight rates, and foreign exchange.

Designated barley
Global malting barley trade is projected to increase due to stronger demand in China and the United States. Rising beer production in China will continue to increase malting barley demand, ...

Australia: ABB Grain said top up payments approved for pool barley growers

ABB Grain Ltd announced on February 28 that its board has approved a top up payment for growers who have supported its pools of up to A$15/tonne.

ABB’s general manager marketing, Nigel Officer, said the top up of $15/tonne for feed barley No.1 and A$7.50/tonne for malting barley No.1 would be paid on March 9 and apply to ABB’s 2005/2006 standard loan and traditional pools.

“This year the barley pool is nearly two million tonnes and ABB has to make some judgments regarding the value of what the unsold barley is,” he said.

“As our selling season progresses we’re now in a stronger position to make additional payments to growers – and this is what the top up is. It’s a payment process that’s been well established with growers and will continue.”

Mr Officer said that growers who didn’t wish to receive the March 9 top up should notify ABB by close of business on March 3. “They will, however, be able to return this money and will not be charged interest, if it’s returned before the end of March,” he said.

The top up payments are in addition to the harvest advances of A$132/tonne for malting barley and A$123/tonne for feed barley announced by ...
