Brewery News
Slovakia: SABMiller has received permission to takeover Topvar brewery

SABMiller, one of the world's largest brewers, has received permission from the Slovak anti-monopoly agency on March 14 to acquire Slovakia's third-largest brewery, Topvar, in a deal with an estimated value of $15-million, according to media sources.

SABMiller confirmed on March 14 that Slovakia's anti-monopoly agency PMU had given its stamp of approval to the deal, saying it did not threaten competition. SABMiller already owns the country's largest brewer, Saris.

The $15m was expected to lift London-based SABMiller to the No 1 position among Slovakia's beermakers, overtaking its Dutch rival Heineken.

SABMiller announced plans to buy out Topvar's small shareholders last May, when the company's hometown of Topolcany agreed to sell its 15% stake.

SABMiller and Heineken have been buying Slovak breweries for several years and together control an estimated 80% of the market. SABMiller already owns the country's largest brewer, Saris, while Heineken controls another local favourite, Zlaty Brazant.

SABMiller spokesperson James Crampton said the company expected the transaction to close in the "next week or two", as there were still some technical requirements that needed to be finalised.

Topvar sold 569 000 hectolitres of beer in 2004, and had a net asset value of $15.2-million. Industry analysts said ...

USA & Singapore: Anheuser-Busch to unleash Tiger Beer in United States

Singaporean, Asia Pacific Breweries, and Anheuser-Busch announced on March 13 that Anheuser-Busch will become the U.S. importer of Tiger Beer, a leading premium brew from Singapore, expanding the American brewer's portfolio in the growing U.S. import category, the two brewers jointly announced today.

The agreement gives Tiger Beer access to Anheuser-Busch's broad marketing and sales expertise and to its wide-reaching U.S. distribution network, which is considered the best in the industry. The deal follows the recent announcement of a similar partnership with the Dutch brewer, Grolsch, continuing an aggressive push by Anheuser-Busch into the high-end beer category.

"Tiger Beer is recognised as one of Asia's finest beer exports," said August A. Busch IV, president of Anheuser-Busch Inc. "Tiger Beer is a high-quality, premium brand that is a perfect complement to our growing portfolio of import beers."

The new agreement significantly broadens Tiger Beer's U.S. distribution opportunities by giving Asia Pacific Breweries access to Anheuser-Busch's network of nearly 600 independent wholesalers. In return Anheuser-Busch wholesalers will have the opportunity to add this exotic and sophisticated Asian beer that has been warmly received in markets such as Europe, Australia and North America. Last year, the brand recorded high, double-digit growth in the ...

Russia: Heineken to focus on Russian market as China is "not an easy nut to crack"

Dutch brewer Heineken NV’s chief executive said in a newspaper interview on Monday, March 13 the brewery would concentrate on expanding on Russian beer market, after struggling to grow in the Chinese market, according to Reuters.

Jean-Francois van Boxmeer told Het Financieele Dagblad that China -- the world's fastest-growing market for beer and accounting for 16 % of global consumption -- was "not an easy nut to crack".

In particular the higher cost of Heineken beer and its bitter flavour to Chinese tastes posed problems, Van Boxmeer said. "The price difference between premium and standard beer is much wider there than the 40% seen elsewhere. We can't let the price drop too much, otherwise it becomes attractive for people to export locally produced Heineken to Australia and Japan," Van Boxmeer said.

"We can't let the price drop too much, otherwise it becomes attractive for people to export locally produced Heineken to Australia and Japan."

Heineken is the world's fourth-largest brewer in terms of sales.

Russia's beer market is also growing fast, however, and Heineken has expanded its position with a string of buys, gaining it a 14 percent market share, he said. Heineken had sufficient scale and beer brands to ...

Japan: February shipments of beer and beer-like alcoholic beverages increased by 11.8%

Shipments of beer and beer-like alcoholic beverages by Japan's top five brewers surged 11.8 % in February from a year earlier for the second straight monthly rise, partly because those of so-called third-category beer fared well, industry figures showed Monday, March 13, according to Kyodo News.

The overall shipment figure posted double-digit growth for the first time in one and a half years, according to the Brewers Association of Japan and beer brewers.

Shipments by Kirin Brewery Co., Asahi Breweries Ltd., Sapporo Breweries Ltd., Suntory Ltd. and Orion Breweries Ltd. came to a total of 33.22 million cases. One case holds 20 633-milliliter bottles.

Kirin appears to have taken the top position with the biggest market share, keeping Asahi in second place for the second month in a row.

Shipments of the third-category beer, or beer-like sparkling drinks, nearly tripled to 7.00 million cases, accounting for 21.1 percent of the market. Products in this category are cheaper than both regular and low-malt beer, known as "happoshu," as they are subject to a lower tax rate.

Shipments of regular beer posted a sizable 9.3 percent gain to 16.71 million cases for the second consecutive monthly rise, while happoshu shipments dropped 21.0 ...

Belarus: The sale of beer will be restricted for the health sake

Belarus authorities will impose restrictions on retail trade in beer and low-alcoholic drinks, Itar-Tass communicated on March 13.

The sale of beer and low-alcoholic drinks will be banned in trade outlets located at educational institutions, health institutions, children’s theatres and institutions, industrial enterprises and at construction sites.

Beer and low-alcoholic drinks will also be banned in buildings that house governmental agencies, at sport facilities, and service stations, as well as through mobile trade outlets and vending machines.

The restrictions will apply mainly to places that are frequented by young people. The new rules will become effective three months after official publication.

Russia: Russky Solod is provided a EUR15 mln syndicated loan

ОАО "Russky Solod", being under control of Avangard Bank, has attracted a syndicated loan facility in the amount of EUR 15 million, the Bank's press service reported on March 14, according to AK&M.

The loan, arranged by Credit Swiss and Nordkap Bank, is provided for a term of five years. The purpose of the loan is to refinance credits extended by Avangard Bank for construction of malting plant in Ostrogozhsk. This year "Russky Solod" intends to attract no less than EUR 50 million from the foreign banks.

"Russky Solod" is the biggest in Russia and one of the largest in Europe producers of light brewer's malt.

Barley News
EU: New crop prospects are indicating a large crop of winter barley

New crop prospects are indicating a large crop of winter barley, albeit feed barley, as France planted much less of Esterel and Vanessa varieties, according to analysts. Total winter barley acreage in France is up from 1.048 to 1.096 million ha, and in Germany even from 1.360 to 1.475 million ha.

Forecasts of spring barley acres are down everywhere, nowhere as much as in Germany, where the Raiffeisen Assn. estimates a reduction from 606,000 to 500,000 ha. Many local experts believe that the final figure will be higher, and we are using 525,000 ha in our estimates below (official and private figures) of the most important malting barley producers of the EU.

China: In January 2006 China imported about 172,000 tonnes of barley

In January 2006 China imported about 172,000 tonnes of barley, of which 86,000 tonnes from Canada, 78,000 tonnes from Australia and 7,000 tonnes from France.

In 2005 the country imported 2.179 million tonnes of malting barley, an increase of almost 30 % from a year earlier. Main suppliers were Australia with 1.16 million tonnes, Canada with 705,000 tonnes and France with 297,000 tonnes.
