Malt News
Germany: The world's sixth largest maltster, Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik KG, bankrupts

Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik KG declared on March 16 about its bankrupcy. According to market analysts this fact confirms that the actual malt prices level will bring most of the maltsters into bankruptcy if no substantial prices improvement happens soon.

The Managing Partners of the Friedrich Weissheimer Malzfabrik KG announced on Thursday, March 16, the insolvency procedure for the company to the local court.

H.-G. Sarx and H. Weissheimer said: “The investment activities into new malting companies in Eastern Europe in the 90th on one hand and the low margin in the malt business during the past years on the other hand reduced the equity of the company below the necessary level.

Therefore, in co-ordination with our supervisory board and the banks, the company negotiated the increase of equity with 3rd partners. A few days ago, the binding offer of a financial investor was accepted by the company and the banks, but was blocked by one single regional bank.

As a consequence, the other banking partners withdrew their support to the company. View the value of the malting plants, the financial assets of the company and the good will which European and international clients extended to the company, we assume that the insolvency administrator will try to maintain ...

Malaysia: Beer and stout sales volume has dropped by 9%

Beer and stout sales volume has dropped by 9% in the last six months due to the increase in duty for those products last year, said Guinness Anchor Bhd managing director, Theo de Rond. He said the company was hoping the government would not impose another duty hike this year as it could impact the industry.

De Rond said the three consecutive duty hikes over the last three years had resulted in a 30% increase in beer prices and had led to a decrease in sales volumes De Rond said Malaysia had one of the highest excise duties, second only to Norway. Yet, he said the disposable income in Norway was much higher compared to Malaysia. If sales volume continued to drop, he said, the government’s revenue from beer sales would also be impacted.

For the second quarter ended Dec 31, 2005, Guinness posted a 2.95% drop in revenue to RM254.86 million due to lower sales volume but managed to record a net profit increase of 4.45% to RM29.91 million because of operational efficiency.

Peru: SABMiller offer to acquire class I non-voting stock in Peru

SABMiller plc announced that, on March 16, 2006, it made an offer on the Lima Stock Exchange for 100% of the investment shares (class I non-voting stock) of Union de Cervecerias Peruanas Backus & Johnston S.A.A. ("Backus"), at a cash price of Peruvian nuevos soles 2.47 per share (“the Offer”).

The Offer will remain open for tender for ten trading days. Assuming 100% acceptance of the Offer, at current exchange rates, SABMiller’s cash requirement for the Offer is expected to be approximately US$400 million.

On October 12, 2005, SABMiller announced the completion of the merger through which it acquired a controlling interest in Bavaria, the second largest brewer in South America. As a result of the merger, Backus became an indirect subsidiary of SABMiller.

Backus is Peru's largest brewer and is listed on the Lima Stock Exchange.

SABMiller plc is one of the world’s largest brewers with brewing interests or distribution agreements in over 60 countries across five continents. The group’s brands include premium international beers such as Miller Genuine Draft, Peroni Nastro Azzurro and Pilsner Urquell, as well as an exceptional range of market leading local brands. Australia: Foster's intending to sell its breweries from overseas

Australia's biggest beer and wine maker Foster's Group Ltd. is seeking to sell its overseas breweries for up to A$200 million, sources close to the situation said on March 15, Reuters reported.

The disposal is likely to attract interest from groups such as Scottish & Newcastle and SABMiller, as international brewers seek to gain from fast-growing Asian beer markets.Foster's, whose amber nectar is one of Australia's most heavily promoted overseas brands, is looking to focus on its domestic beer business and its expansion into wine. The Melbourne-based group is looking to sell its international side, with operations in India, Vietnam, China, Fiji and Samoa, but wants to keep control over the brand and collect royalty streams, as in Europe, the sources said.

Foster's spokesman Troy Hey declined comment on a possible sale. "All we can say is that they (the Asian breweries) are performing very well. We have a complete commitment to the Foster's brand in Asia," he said.S&N and SABMiller declined to comment.

The two British-based brewers, S&N and SABMiller, are seen as leading contenders in an auction due to their existing Foster's relationships. The former controls the brand in Europe and the later in the United States. Both are also keen to ...

Angola & Portugal: Unicer is to invest 150 million euros in Angolan factory

Unicer Group, Portugal’s biggest beer maker, plans to invest 150 million euros in a beer factory in Angola, a country in which is currently its largest export market, the company's chairman has said on March 16, according to MacauHub.

Speaking to Portuguese daily Publico, Ferreira de Oliveira said that the new unit based in Bom Jesus, on the outskirts of Luanda, which will be the first the Portuguese group has opened on foreign soil will be operational by mid 2008 and will have a production capacity of 70 million liters in its initial phase, and 140 million liters at full capacity.

"We hope that very soon it can be approved in a Cabinet Meeting so that we can then move ahead with the process. If that happens by April, we can approve the engineering and tenders by the end of the year and the factory can come into production in mid 2008,” Oliveira said.

The Cristal brand of beer is the one which Unicer sells most in Angola, followed by SuperBock, and in the premium segment it leads with Carlsberg.

In 2005, Unicer exported 60 million liters of beer to Angola, more than half of the total sold abroad, and the company expects the ...

Denmark: Carlsberg expands market for draught beer

Carlsberg launches a new draught beer system for professional and private users under the name DraughtMaster™. The professional system offers customers a number of benefits, like perfect taste every time, easy handling, one-way kegs, 21 days shelf-life from first serve, perfect temperature control and very easy cleaning and maintenance, the company announced on .

A special home version of DraughtMaster™ offers the consumers a whole new opportunity to enjoy fresh and cold draught beer at home, served directly from the tap.

Carlsberg is the only brewery in the world offering this new technology, replacing metal kegs with plastic (high barrier PET) kegs – a system protected worldwide by principal patents.

The new Carlsberg DraughtMaster™ system is launched in Denmark, Norway, Portugal and Sweden today. Later, the system will also be launched in other countries, inside and outside Europe.

The major gain is that the genuine taste of draught beer is preserved all the way from the brewery to the consumer - due to the DraughtMaster™ keg being a completely sealed system. The beer keg (barrel) is filled with ready-to-drink beer in a new optimized process that allows no oxygen to enter the keg. Without oxygen the process of decay has no nourishment and ...

Barley News
USA: A new developed two-rowed barley variety in North Dakota

A new two-rowed barley variety, Rawson, was developed and released by the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station, said Al Schneiter, North Dakota State University Department of Plant Sciences chair, according to the Farm and Ranch report of March 16.

Rawson has parentage that includes mostly experimental lines to incorporate leaf spot resistance and low-grain protein. Logan is one of the grandparents. Jerry Franckowiak, leader of the NDSU two-row breeding project, made the initial cross in the NDSU greenhouse in 1998.

The first generation following the cross was grown at Langdon in 1998, with subsequent generations grown in North Dakota and the winter nurseries near Christchurch, New Zealand, and Yuma, Ariz. Based on five years of trials at Research Extension Centers in North Dakota, Rawson has slightly higher yield and better leaf disease resistance than Conlon. Rawson heads out about two days later and is slightly taller than Conlon. Rawson has stronger straw than Conlon, but seems to yield lower when severe lodging occurs.

Rawson is similar to Conlon in fusarium head blight (scab) severity and slightly higher in deoxynivalenol (DON) levels. It is susceptible to some isolates of net blotch, but has excellent resistance to spot blotch and some resistance to Septoria speckled ...

Hops News
Australia: Hops harvest down. Only six hops producers left in Victoria

A smaller crop yield will mean hops producers in Victoria get to enjoy an after work beer a little earlier this year.

The harvest started a week ago, and growers say despite a hot summer, leaf quality is good. Many Australians would call this the most important three weeks of the year -- the hop-picking season.

But manager of Victoria's largest hops garden, Graham Hughes says not as much is being produced. "We're down to very few growers left in Victoria regrettably, there's only about six growers left and we're the biggest by far," he said. "The situation is that yes, we're learning to produce more off the same area but at the same time the brewers have learned to use hops more efficiently and really have managed to reduce their demand even though beer production maybe increasing."

Yesterday, 90 workers in the Derwent Valley were frantically picking the key ingredient for Australia's iconic beverage -- beer. Hop harvesting has been mechanised for the past eight years, but yesterday pickers revived the skills used in the Bushy Park hop fields stretching back 150 years and picked the vines by hand.

Workers wearing long sleeves and gloves to protect against the thorny vines climbed ...
