Belgium: Duvel Moortgat’s consolidated turnover rises by 8.2%

Belgium’s brewery Duvel Moortgat has posted 2005 consolidated turnover of EUR 66 million, up 8.2% on 2004. Global turnover increased by 5% with growth pushed by speciality beers such as the 3 Maredsous abbey beers (+17%), Bel (+12%) and Vedett (up almost 100%).The Turnover of the locally brewed Czech Bernard beers rose by 28%. Ommegang products in the United States are up 39%.

However, with Belgian beer consumption decreasing by 0.93% in 2005, Duvel Moortgat had no choice but to continue the internationalisation. Last year some 35% of turnover, versus 30% in 2004, came from international activities. In Belgium and the Netherlands, turnover increased by respectively 3% and 8%, not taking into account Freya natural fruit juices. In France, turnover is up 19% and sales of beers in the UK rose 47%. Sales in the United States also shot up, increasing some 40%.

"Abroad, the brewery will continue to expand its sales teams and strengthen its marketing efforts to reinforce Duvel's image and distribution in on-and-off trade outlets. Vedett will continue to focus its commercial efforts on the Belgian market," the company said yesterday in a statement.

Duvel intends to invest some EUR 12 million in 2006. The main investments ...

Vietnam: Hatay Brewery qualified for world's quality management standards

Asia Pacific Breweries Limited’s subsidiary, Hatay Brewery Limited Co. based in the northern province of Ha Tay, was qualified for the world's quality management standards, and received the ISO 9001:2000 and the HACCP certifications which were assessed and accredited by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service (UKAS), Vietnam News Agency (VNA) communicated on March 22.

With a designed capacity of 30 million litres of beer a year, the Hatay Brewery is considered by the beer producer Heineken as its most modern facility in Southeast Asia, and ranks third among 115 factories in 65 countries in terms of production stability and quality.

It is the first beer factory applying automatic robots in packaging and meeting all strictest standards on quality management and food safety. The factory also invested over 1 million USD for a wastewater treatment system and spends about 200,000 USD annually for maintaining a quality management system.

The 65 million USD Hatay Brewery Limited Co. 100% owned by the Singapore-based Asia Pacific Brewries Ltd., produces many different kinds of beer such as Heineken, Tiger, Anchor, and Bivina.

Poland: Changes in Kompania Piwowarska’s distribution system

As of April 1 (beginning of the fiscal year), Kompania Piwowarska is planning to introduce changes to the existing distribution system for the traditional market, the company announced on March 21.

The new strategy will implement the concept of the “Business Partner of Choice” through building long-term relations with strategic business partners of Kompania Piwowarska. The distribution model will continue to be based on supplies delivered through wholesalers. This is an optimal solution for the Polish market from the point of view of the clients and also to assure product availability to customers.

The proposed changes are to contribute to improved profitability of both Kompania Piwowarska, the beer market leader (with a 38.3% market share in Q4 2005) and its business partners by reinforcing the existing business model through reciprocal support of both parties.

KP has decided to support its business partners both technically and financially. Wholesalers will be able to benefit from rebates formerly available only to Kompania Piwowarska for the purchase of fixed assets. There will also be joint promotional and sales activities carried out in points of sale. KP will also support its partners by running central and regional support programs for individual brands. As part of ...

USA: Belgium's InBev may reportedly sell Rolling Rock

The world's biggest brewer, InBev NV, is looking to sell its U.S. Rolling Rock brewery and brand, L'Echo reports Thursday, March 23, citing an unnamed U.S. spokesman for the company. The sale would come to allow InBev to concentrate on more important brands such as Stella Artois and Beck's, the newspaper says. The paper says that both Anheuser Busch (BUD) or Boston Beer Company (SAM), producer of Samuel Adams, are interested in buying Rolling Rock.

According to Reuters, Belgium-based InBev, brewer of Stella Artois and Beck's, is keen to resolve its poor U.S. performance, and new Brazilian Chief Executive Carlos Brito wants to focus InBev on being a strong player in the U.S. import beer sector.

InBev says it has decided to concentrate its U.S. sales and marketing resources on imported brands such as Bass, Brahma and Labatt Blue, as well as Stella Artois and Beck's, and is examining all options for the future of Rolling Rock.

"The company has started examining opportunities both inside and outside InBev to determine how to optimize the full potential of Rolling Rock and the Latrobe Brewing Company ... No final decision has been made at this time," an InBev spokeswoman told Reuters.

One option is ...

UK: Budget 2006 – Missed chance for British Beer, according to British Beer and Pub Association

Gordon Brown's decision to raise beer duty is a missed opportunity to create a clear, long-term strategy for beer taxes and correct a long-standing tax distortion between beer and wine, the British Beer and Pub Association commented on March 22.

“The Chancellor’s inconsistency is shown in his decision to freeze tax on spirits and cider,” said Mark Hastings, Director of Communications at the British Beer and Pub Association. “It seems curious that the strongest alcoholic drinks, such as spirits and wine, have enjoyed consistently better tax treatment than beer, which has suffered a 22 per cent tax hike since 1997.

"Rather than the annual Budget merry-go-round, what business needs is a clear strategy for beer duty that delivers the stability we need for planning. Instability, uncertainty and pressures on the sector have cost 1000 jobs in the brewing industry over the last 12 months.

“The Government's unequal treatment of the beer and wine taxes is now costing the Treasury an estimated ?200 million a year. Stronger beer is taxed more than weaker beer, but stronger wine is taxed the same as weaker wine. Consequently, because wine has increased significantly in strength it is now taxed less relative ...

Scandinavia: Scandinavian Malting Barley situation: analysts’ point of view

The activities consisting of short coverings by trading houses more than purchases by the malsters, H. Abildstrøm & Co. ApS commented on March 23. New crop which has been rather undeveloped for a while is picking up again at slightly higher levels than during the winter.

Underlying pressure on the prices still emanating from the industry which is a world under severe strain. For 2007 seems malsters have been able to obtain slightly higher levels at the breweries, but competition is ferocious and quality capacity overwhelming.

Hence have reasons to believe due to 1) bearish malting barley balance sheet and 2) no immediate improvement of malsters situation that we may see another season with low malting barley prices. The impact of feed-barley demand/pricing will obviously still govern basic levels in some regions of the Scandinavian markets as usual, but Avian-Flu could move the fundamentals. The disease has been found both in Sweden and in Denmark, still not in Finland but considered avoidable there as well. Situation causing kind of vacuum in compound industry.

General turnover slow and thin. Farmers – mainly on the Danish Islands are still holding back malting barley and an exporter having to complete some 25.000 ts vessels ...

New Zealand: Fungicide resistance in barley crops

The Foundation for Arable Research announced on March 23 that the confirmation of fungicide resistance in powdery mildew on barley in Canterbury has serious implications for the entire arable sector. The foundation communicated that the samples taken so far, resistance to strobilurin fungicides is highest among barley mildew.

FAR states it is important that growers now limit their use of strobilurins, or risk development of fullscale resistance to the fungicide. It says when wheat powdery mildew resistance was discovered in Europe in the late 1990s, strobilurin fungicides had little effect after two seasons. Accroding to FAR , it has been confirmed that the New Zealand mutation is identical to that found in Europe.

Andrew Gillanders, the Federated Farmers grains spokesperson, says growers have been doing all they can to slow the development of resistance. Mr Gillanders says another way of tackling powdery mildew is by growing crop varieties that are resistant to it.
