Brewery News
China: Yanjing Beer made an additional investment in its Guangdong subsidiary

Thailand: New CEO of Boon Rawd Trading International makes ambitious plan for Singha beer

The new chief executive officer of Boon Rawd Trading International Co has set an ambitious plan to raise the profile of the Singha beer brand internationally, with the aim of tripling exports to 25% of total sales over the next five years, Bangkok Post reported on March 29. Tom Kruesopon is the first outsider to run the 73-year-old operation, which until last month had been controlled by the founding Bhirombhakdi family.

He also was offered some shares in the company, but he declined to reveal the amount.''I am very proud to have a chance to work with Boon Rawd, which is well known for its long history. If I fail to achieve the sales target, I will consider resigning from the post. This is a self-imposed mission and Boon Rawd has never forced me to set any target,'' he said.

Last year, the brewer of the Singha, Leo and Asahi brands earned 30 billion baht in total sales. Over the next five years, the sales figure is expected to reach 50 billion baht.To achieve the target, Mr Tom said he would strengthen Boon Rawd's operation, which has suffered from the stagnation in the 80-billion-baht market at home, where competition has intensified with ...

Malaysia: Beer consumption in decrease because of higher prices says Carlsberg

Consumers are increasingly choosing wine or hard liquor over beer because a steady increase in beer prices over the last three years has made it relatively more expensive, says Carlsberg Brewery Malaysia. The brewer, according to Businnes Times, along with rival Guinness Anchor Bhd, have raised the prices of beer and stout by 30 % in less than three years to pass on higher excise duties imposed on them by the Government.

"The continued inequitable increase in duty has narrowed the price gap between beer and hard liquor or wine on a per serving basis. Consequently, there has been a greater shift in consumption from beer to wine or hard liquor," said Carlsberg chairman Datuk Lim Say Chong in the company's 2005 annual report.

He said this, and other factors resulting from the duty increases, will result in 2006 being a "very challenging" year.He expects consumption of beer and stout - collectively known as malt liquor - to fall further this year. Analysts expect consumption to decline by as much as 10 %.

"The presence of low-priced imported beers and the increasing levels of smuggled beer products will also further exert pressure on the recovery of the growth of the Malaysian beer and ...

Colombia: SABMiller will choose an investment bank to value its subsidiary Bavaria

London-based brewer SABMiller Plc will choose an investment bank in May to value its subsidiary Bavaria ahead of a compulsory offer to buy 3 percent of the Colombian company's stock from minority shareholders, a company official said on Thursday, March 30, according to Reuters report

"We hope to take the decision in May," said SABMiller's president for Latin America, Barry Smith, at a Bavaria shareholders' assembly in Bogota.

SABMiller bought 97 percent of Bavaria last year for about $9 billion in a stock-and-cash deal, including debt and interests in subsidiaries, which it said created the world's second-largest brewer by volume. It paid $19.48 a share, but minority shareholders opted to make use of a Colombian law allowing them to seek an audit of the price.

SABMiller will have to offer the price decided by the auditors at the investment bank, which could be higher or lower than $19.48.

Bavaria shares closed up 0.14 percent at 44,240 pesos on the Colombian Stock Exchange on Thursday.

Malt News
Vietnam: The second Vietnamese malting plant will be launched this year

Beer production in Vietnam has reached about 15 million hl per annum and is growing by 8% every year. Nowadays the country accounts only one malting plant with a capacity of 45,000 tonnes per year. The second one with a production capacity of 90,000 tonnes will be launched during 2006 and will cover in such a way 50% of Vietnam malt needs.

In the meantime Vietnam imports about 250,000 tonnes of malt mainly from EU, Australia, China and USA.

Barley News
World: IGC’s estimation of Barley Supply and Demand 2005/06 and Outlook 2006/07

World barley production for 2005/2006 is estimated by the International Grains Council (IGC) at 138.7 million tonnes, similar to last month, IGC posted in its Grain Market Report on March 30. Forecast total consumption is also little different at 142.0 million tonnes, increases in feed use in North Africa and Near East Asia being balanced by reductions in the EU and Russia. The strengthening feed demand, with particularly large shipments to Iran and Saudi Arabia, is reflected in an 0.6 million tonnes increase in estimated total trade to 18.0m tons, although the forecast for malting barley is lower, at 4.3 million tonnes. Revisions to the EU’s barley use statistics increase its estimated stocks, and the world total at the end of 2005/06 is now projected at 26.7 million tonnes.

Despite sowing delays, barley production in the EU is expected in 2006/2007 to be significantly higher than in 2005, when yields were low, according to IGC. Sowings of spring barley in the CIS countries will probably increase to make up for losses of winter grains and production will likely be higher. Farmers in Canada are expected to switch to barley from canola, while good rains in North ...

Australia: Barley producers willing to retain the barley export monopoly

Barley growers in South Australia want to retain an export monopoly but have indicated they want it to operate more independently from current manager ABB Grain Ltd. (ABB.AU), according to a statement issued on March 28 by South Australian Farmers' Federation, Dow Jones reports.

Of the 5,909 barley growers in the state, some 1,762, or 30%, participated in a ballot, which was completed late last week, about the barley export monopoly, with 80% saying they wanted it while 20% said they didn't.

Asked about maintaining the status quo, 41% wanted the monopoly managed by ABB Grain to continue while 59% wanted more independence for the export monopoly, the federation said.

How this might happen wasn't stated. A third question canvassed growers' preferences for other marketing arrangements, were the export monopoly not be supported by most growers. To this question, 89% said they would prefer the introduction of a licensing authority, similar to one operating in Western Australia, while 11% favored total deregulation. Brett Roberts, chairman of the federation's grains council, said the ballot showed South Australian barley growers back the export monopoly, or single desk, as its known locally.

"There is a lot of pressure on governments to abandon marketing ...
