Brewery News
Poland: Carlsberg opens financial services centre in Poland

Carlsberg AS said on April 11 it has opened a financial services centre in Poznan in the west of Poland that will serve its Polish and German operations, according to AFX.

The centre will become operational in November and will employ 70 accounting specialists. Initially, it will serve Carlsberg's Polish breweries, and will start serving the German ones in March 2007.

Poznan won the location of the financing centre against Budapest and Bucharest. Carlsberg did not say how much it is investing in the centre.

The Danish brewer has three breweries in Poland and markets eight brands of beer there. Its own brand holds a 14.5 pct share of the Polish market.

Carlsberg's Polish sales in 2005 were 845 mln zlotys (213 mln eur), up 8 pct from a year earlier. The net profit rose from 5 mln zlotys to 65 mln zlotys or 16.4 mln eur.

Germany: Anheuser-Busch being barred from using Budweiser brand in Germany this summer

Anheuser-Busch, the US giant behind the World Cup's official beer, is being barred from using the Budweiser brand in Germany this summer because of a trademark dispute, the Independent announced on April 9.

Anheuser-Busch is thought to have paid around $40m (£23m) for Budweiser to become one of 15 premium sponsors, beside McDonald's, Coca-Cola and MasterCard. Various campaigns and promotions are already running. Nevertheless, unlike fellow sponsors, the Budweiser brand will not appear on the all-important pitch-side hoardings because of a long-running row with the Czech brewer Budvar over which owns the name.

"USA does not pitch up to the World Cup but the exposure is still massive," Nigel Currie, director of the sports marketing group Brand Rapport, said of the tournament. "You have 180 countries tuning in and brand coverage for three solid weeks."

The group wanted to use the name Bud instead of Budweiser, but the German brewer Bitburger complained it was too similar to its Bit brand. The US giant will use Anheuser-Busch Bud. Bitburger will sell its beer in the stadiums.

"The event provides Anheuser-Busch with an excellent opportunity to continue to build our brand," said Tony Ponturo, vice-president of global media and sports marketing at the US giant." ...

CIS: Scottish & Newcastle to acquire the Foster’s brand in Europe

Scottish & Newcastle plc (“S&N” or the “Group”) announces that it has agreed to acquire the Foster’s brand in Europe (including Turkey), the Russian Federation and other countries in the Commonwealth of Independent States (“CIS”) from Foster’s Group Limited (“FGL”) for approximately £309 million payable in cash on completion (the “Acquisition”). The Acquisition is conditional only on regulatory clearance under Australia’s Foreign Acquisitions and Takeover Act 1975.

Background and rationale. In 1995, S&N acquired from FGL the licence to brew, package and market Foster’s in the UK, the Republic of Ireland and Continental Europe (including the Russian Federation and certain other Eastern European countries of the CIS). However, ownership of the Foster’s brands and associated rights remained with FGL. Sales of Foster’s in these territories have grown considerably under S&N’s management and the brands accounted for some 14 per cent. of S&N’s total sales (by volume) in the year ended 31 December 2005. Pursuant to the terms of the 1995 agreement, S&N was obliged to pay FGL annual royalties from sales of Foster’s as well as support the brands with a minimum contractual marketing spend. In the year ended 31 December 2005, royalty payments amounted to £15 million.

Foster’s worldwide volumes amounted ...

China: The sales of Yanjing Beer exceeded 30 million hl in 2005

The vice director of Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co., Ltd. (Yanjing Beer), one of China's biggest beer brewers, Dai Yongquan said on April 8 that the sales of Yanjing Beer exceeded 3 million kiloliters in 2005 and edged into top 10 in the world's beer market by its production and sales, according to China Business Daily News.

Yanjing Beer registered a net profit for 2005 of CNY276.8m (US$34.6m), up 2.3% from 2004, on the back of a 13.8% rise in sales to CNY5.3bn. Company’s beer volumes increased by 10.3% to 2.85 million tonnes.

Another vice director of Yanjing Beer Ding Guangxue said that since the sales of Yanjing Beer exceeded 1 million kiloliters in 1999, it kept a rapid growth of 1 million kiloliters every 3 years.

Now, Yanjing Beer has wrapped up an agreement with China National Women's Volleyball Team (CNWVT) on developing the market of beer and soft drinks in the period of Beijing 2008 Olympics.

Malt News
Germany: The malt market turned around in a big way

Already the earlier developments, but most of all the Weissheimer case have turned the malt market around in a big way.

Some weeks ago a large German brewery still managed to purchase malt for 2007 at prices around € 260,- delivered plants, now levels are between 270,- and 280,-. Comparable prices last year were 230/240, market analysts said on April 3.

German beer sales recovered from a bad January and stand at plus 1,1 % for the first two months of the year.

EU: No maltster can accept such losses for another year, according to experts

For the crop year 2005, delivery 2006, many malt sales were done at prices, which will leave losses of € 20,-/30,- per ton in the maltsters' books. Balance sheets were bad for 2005, but will be worse for 2006, malt market experts posted on April 3.

No maltster, and no maltster's banker, can accept such losses for another year. The turning point of malt markets came closer, when maltsters started to reject low bids from Thailand and South America in the late months of 2005.

British malting companies had been the first to close older capacities, they were followed by French and German firms.

Germans and Scandinavians kept some malthouses shut for limited periods, which took further pressure from the market. A German merger and a Danish acquisition created stronger groups, albeit at a still modest level. The real shock was the insolvency of the Weissheimer maltings in Germany and Hungary. The market had suspected that the former No. 1 in Germany had been in trouble, but expected that they would overcome their problems. Their downfall (which may not be final yet) sent waves through the market and brought about greater caution in the malting industries and at least some ...

Barley News
EU: Feed and malting barley markets were calm in March, analysts said

Feed and malting barley markets were calm in March, market analysts have recently commented. The EU Commission granted no export refunds, sold a mere 16,000 tonnes from intervention stocks.

Exporters of feed and malting barley booked 105,000 tonnes of export licences without refunds. Disappointment with markets showed in an increased intervention activity, a total of 1.74 million tonnes have been sold resp. offered to the intervention boards during the crop year 2005/06. Barley intervention stocks are manageable and even small when compared to wheat and maize stocks, 7.9 and 6.15 million tonnes respectively.

Large stocks in the new member countries, particularly Hungary, cost a lot of money to move to deficit areas or export points. The situation will not become easier, when Bulgaria and Romania join the EU in 2007 or 2008. A recent "evaluation" study of the EU Commission, which is not published yet, will suggest major changes to the intervention system.

Whether intervention of some grains (barley) is abandoned or intervention points with price guarantees are reduced to a few central places or wheat and coarse grains will not have a common intervention price any more, any changes would certainly mean lower prices. The protectionists in the EU ...

Brewing beer

Brewing is the production of alcoholic beverages and alcohol fuel through fermentation. This is the method used in beer production, although the term can be used for other drinks such as sake, mead and wine. The term is also sometimes used to refer to any chemical mixing process.

Brewing has a very long history, and archeological evidence tells us that this technique was used in ancient Egypt. Descriptions of various beer recipes can be found in Sumerian writings, some of the oldest known writing of any sort.

All beers are brewed using a process based on a simple formula. Key to the process is malted grain, traditionally barley, but often also wheat and, less commonly rye. (When malting rye, due care must be taken to prevent ergot poisoning (ergotism), as rye is particularly prone to developing this toxic fungus during the malting process.).... Read full article
