South Africa: SABMiller's highly acquisitive personality makes it the most extensive beer group

SABMiller's acquisition of South American beer group Bavaria ensures that it is geographically the most extensive beer group and that, among the major global players, it has the greatest exposure to emerging markets, The Business Report posted June 6.

When SAB first listed in London in 1999, its profile as an emerging market beer group held back its share rating. Three years later the acquisition of the second-largest beer group in the US, Miller Brewing, not only helped to ensure that SAB would be big enough not to be swallowed up, but also gave it a position in the single largest First World market.

It has also helped that the world investment community has become familiar with the highly acquisitive SABMiller, its management and its widespread portfolio and has also become familiar with the strong profit growth that can come from emerging markets.

Results for the 12 months to March would seem to justify management's affection for emerging markets. They indicated that there was little relief from the difficulties facing Miller, but that most other operations, which are largely in emerging markets, continued to show reasonable progress.

Latvia: Brewery Cesu Alus is planning to take 20 pct of Latvian beer market this year

Brewery JSC Cesu Alus, Latvia’s second biggest brewery, in May 2006 sold 4.21 mln litres being an all time record, Baltic Business News released June 05. Last month the company increased beer sales by 33 pct to 3.13 million litres in comparison to May of 2005.

“The first five months were very successful and creative for our company,” says Eva Sietinsone, chairwoman of JSC Cesu Alus. In first five months of the year JSC Cesu Alus has produced and sold in total 10.6 mln litres of beer, up by 18 pct year-on-year.

The sales of cider and alcopops increased by 49 pct January-May of 2006, but sales of soft drinks increased by half.

In first five months of the year sales of juices and juice based soft drinks increased by 12 pct year-on-year.

In total sales of JSC Cesu Alus production in first five months of the year has increased by 23 pct.

Brewery Cesu Alus is planning to take 20 pct of Latvian beer market until the end of this year. Last year Cesu Alus ended with having 17 pct of Latvian beer market, results of Q-1 this year shows, that company had increased its market share to 18 pct.

China: Tsingtao Beer among the most valuable brands worldwide

On June 5, the 25 brands of greatest value were published by the latest Chinese version of Fortune. Among the 25 brands, 6 are from China. Tsingtao beer has made its first presence in the list, ranking the 20th, according to People's Daily Online.

According to the Chinese version of Fortune, Tsingtao Beer, with its experience of international brand building, has been greatly acknowledged worldwide.

The top 25 brands are: BMW, Microsoft, Intel, Benz, CocaCola, IMB, Haier, Nokia, Wuliangye, Kweichow Moutai, Airbus, Porsche, Audi, Lenovo, Motorola, Walmart, Boeing, Google, Tongrentang, Tsingtao beer, Pepsi, Siemens, Sony, Nike and General Motors.

Czech Republic: Mestansky pivovar Strakonice posts Kc3.4milion profit in 2005

Czech brewer Mestansky pivovar Strakonice made a profit of Kc3.4 million last year on sales worth Kc95.4 million, the company's managers told journalists June 01, CTK communicated the same day.

Beer output fell by 4 percent to 73,000 hectolitres against a 12-percent decline the previous years. Mestansky was a state-run company until end-2004 when it was taken over by the Strakonice municipality.

The Strakonice brewery celebrated the 350th anniversary in 1999. The issues brands like 8° pale Nektar, 9° Silver, 10° pale Nektar Gold, 10° dark Nektar, 11° pale lagerbeer Nektar, a 12° pale lagerbeer Strakonický Dudák.

France: Heineken’s below-the-line advertising to raise the image of beer to compete with wine

In a country where alcohol is barred from television and high-profile sports sponsorships, underground advertising is fermenting into new exotic forms like cocktail-shaking classes and dried-fruit Heineken recipes for "Moelleux à la Bière Brune," The International Herald Tribune posted June 04.

Along the tourist path of the Champs-Élysées, the Dutch brewer Heineken has created an ultramodern preserve called Culture Bière with menus color-coded for matching the proper beer with tuna steaks or cumin-flavored tortillas. The sleek club lounge, thematic restaurant and boutique are designed with one overriding message: to raise the image of beer to compete with wine, which seems as essential as water in France.

"Globally, one of the issues that we face in France is that it is not a beer country but a wine country, and the image of beer is very poor," said Richard Weissend, managing director for Brasseries Heineken in Paris. "It was our task to create a plan to improve that and to show that the colors, the aromas and the flavors of beer could be just as rich as wine."

Slovak Republic: Pivovar Saris A.S. announces results for the financial year ended 31 March

Pivovar Saris, a subsidiary of the second largest global brewer in the world, SABMiller, announced June 06 results for the financial year ending 31 March 2006. These results will be subject to approval by the General Meeting that will take place on 10 July 2006 in Veliki Saris, SABMiller released June 06.

According to the release, the Revenue grew by almost 17 % to SKK 2.213 billion. Total investments of the company reached the level of SKK 162.3 million and their large part was aimed at SAP implementation. Operating income reached the level of SKK 23 million. Net loss was SKK 19.0 million for the accounting period due to increased investments and tougher conditions in the Slovakian beer market

During the financial year ending 31 March 2006, Pivovar Saris managed to maintain its share of the market while increasing turnover and continuing to invest in the future of its brands. Total volume of sales of Pivovar Saris declined 3% to 1,238,551 hectolitres, ahead of the decline in the Slovakian beer market which fell 4% over the period.

Ireland: Greencore to restructure this year its malting core operations in the UK and Ireland

In its recent interim statement, Greencore Group plc, a major international manufacturer and supplier of food ingredients and prepared foods with manufacturing sites located in Ireland, Great Britain, The Netherlands and Belgium and employing over 9,000 people, highlighted that international malt prices reached a low point in the cycle at the end of 2005, driven, in large part, by industry over-capacity.

That pricing impact, allied to energy increases of more than 50% year on year, had a negative impact on the profitability of the Greencore Group’s malt business. During the period, the business benefited from a legal settlement of €4.9 million. Last year, Greencore took the step of closing three maltings; this year the focus is on restructuring its core operations in the UK and Ireland, the net costs of which are €4.6 million. This work is ongoing and Greencore believes it will ultimately leave it well placed to benefit from the anticipated improvement in the malt cycle.

However, malt remains a challenge but the anticipated upturn in malt prices, which is taking longer to materialise than Greencore had hoped, is expected to assert itself in late FY06 and FY07.

World: The latest market outlook on barley

According to the South West Terminal Marketing Group’s last week Market Outlook, The International Grains Council (IGC) is forecasting world barley demand to up 3 million metric tonnes next year to 147 million metric tonnes. The production forecast is increased by 1 million tons to 148 million tons, 8 million up from 2005.

The US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is reporting that US feed barley prices have risen 15 to 20 cents US per bushel during the last half of May due to increases in other commodity prices.

The US Economics Research Services is predicting that this year’s American barley crop will be 7 million bushels less than last year due to a lower harvested area (down 69,000 acres) and smaller yields (0.7 fewer bushels).

Some analysts are predicting that US corn prices will be improving next year and as a result Canadian feed barley prices will be firming up as well. The USDA’s May Supply and Demand report estimates that next year’s US corn production will down about 5 million metric tonnes from this year and with the increased demand for corn, next year’s corn carryout stocks will be chopped by about 37 million metric tonnes.

EU: Supply of malting barley is gradually diminishing

According to some recent reports on barley and malting barley markets progress, the supply of barley is gradually diminishing, despite forecasted surplus of spring malting barley harvest and declining malt production. Barley exports to third countries as well as the poor quality of barley in South-West Germany and France are likely to provide a close explanation to this generally problematic situation.

It appears that Scandinavia remains the only supplier of old harvest barley, or all other suppliers seem to have already exhausted their stocks. However, there are still malt producers who are in need for barley from the old crop until the new barley becomes available. According to these reasons, they are to pay some EUR 150 per malting barley tone, which is nearly EUR 20 more than they used to pay a year ago.

Malting barley prices are disappointing the growers. Unlike that, other field crops are being remunerated by better selling prices. Hence, fields under new malting barley harvest continue to statistically contract.

Producing a Quality Malt from Hulless Barley

Abstract:
The significantly higher levels of extract from hulless barley malt offer tremendous economic potential for the brewery. In the past this advantage has been negated by a need for intact hulls to act as a filter bed in the lautering process. New technologies for spent grain separation, such as pressure mash filters and centrifugation, have increased interest in hulless barley malt. Another concern has been the potential for embryo or acrospire loss during malting due to the missing protection of the hull, and low malt friability was thought to be an indication of such loss. However, research with the Canadian hulless variety, CDC Dawn, indicated that poor friability values were not explained by embryo loss. The Calcofluor test showed that modification had reached the distal end in over 90% of the kernels. Inadequate malting conditions were then postulated as a cause of poor friability possibly due to higher percentages of ß-glucan and protein in hulless barley. Improved friability results were obtained when steep-out moistures or germination times were increased, but values still did not reach the commercially acceptable range. However, the use of hammer mills in preparing malt for new separation technologies will reduce the need for as high a level of malt friability and the commercial use of hulless barley malt with its high extract levels will be possible.
