USA & EU: European Union upholds Anheuser-Busch's right to "Bud"

Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc. announced another legal victory June 26 in an ongoing fight to trademark its top-selling Budweiser beer in Europe, Associated Press communicated June 26.

The Board of Appeal for the European Union's Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market ruled that Anheuser-Busch can register its trademark "Bud" beer throughout Europe, the company announced.

The ruling is just one piece of a massive legal fight in several European courts between Anheuser-Busch and the Czech brewer Budejovicky Budvar. At issue is the famous Budweiser brand, which both companies claim an historical right to use.

The Czech brewery was founded in 1895 in a town called "Budweis" by the German immigrants who founded it - a beer brewed there would have been known as a Budweiser. Anheuser-Busch launched its own U.S. Budweiser brand in 1876, picking the name because it evoked German brewers but was still easy for U.S. consumers to pronounce.

The European court's ruling is subject to appeal, but is a major step forward in Anheuser-Busch's effort to market Budweiser in Europe, according to the company.

China: Tsingtao to lift market share in Beijing to 40% by 2008

Tsingtao Brewery Co, China's biggest beermaker, is stepping up its push into Beijing, aiming to double its market share in the home of Beijing Yanjing Brewery Co by the time the city hosts the 2008 Olympic Games, Shanghai Daily posted June 28.

Tsingtao plans to boost market share in China's capital to 40 percent by 2008 by selling its Dayou brand beer for 1.5 yuan (19 US cents) a bottle and employing an army of 1,500 salespeople to visit bars and neighborhoods and offer drinkers one free bottle for every five bought, company spokeswoman Yuan Lu said June 27.

"Beijing is an important city with consumption of 1 million tons of beer a year," Yuan said in a phone interview from the company's base in Qingdao, eastern China. "Most people know Tsingtao but few drink the brand. We want to change it by selling low-cost beer."

Tsingtao, which is 27 percent owned by US-based Anheuser-Busch, the maker of Budweiser, is counting on Beijing to boost its volume sales in the north China region, the slowest-growing area for the company. Yanjing has about 80 percent of the market in the country's third-biggest city.

Germany: Breweries revenues rise 10% in June during World Cup

Revenues during the World Cup have been stronger than originally expected, said Bavaria's Brewer President Michael Weiss in Munich. Due to the international soccer event, Bavarian brewers are now expecting an additional increase of 10 percent for the month of June. Till now they had counted on only a 5 percent revenue increase, Deutsche Welle posted June 24.

Udo Franke, spokesman for Carlsberg Germany said, "It's because of good weather and German victories that we're selling more beer." Good weather during the World Cup has made soccer fans especially thirsty.

It's no surprise that beer is the preferred thirst quencher of soccer fans. "We definitely expect our sales to double during the World Cup," predicted Georg Schaefer, manager of a private brewery. Slightly less optimistic, individual retailers in Cologne expect sales increases of 20 percent,.

With 19,000 hectoliters (501,927 gallons), the Veltins Brewery set an output record June 23 and June 19. In May, the Krombacher Brewery had the best month in the history of the company with 600,000 hectoliters (15.85 million gallons). Bitburger also reached June 23 a record with 29,000 hectoliters (766,000 gallons).

Czech Republic: Prazdroj to invest CZK 4 billion by 2011

Plzensky Prazdroj, the largest Czech brewery, will invest CZK 4 billion (US$176.150 million) in 2006-2011, mainly in its plant in Plzen, capital investment manager Adam Gunn told CTK June 23.

Prazdroj will spend 60-70 percent of the sum in Plzen, where it brews its top-selling brands, Gambrinus and Radegast. The rest will be used to buy tanks for fermentation and ageing for the Radegast and Velke Popovice breweries.

Prazdroj will draw solely on its own funds to finance the investment, said Gunn.

Prazdroj launched the operation of ten new fermentation tanks in Plzen June 23 and expanded the Plzen brewing house by a second line to produce wort.

In October, the Prazdroj is looking to launch a new bottling plant worth CZK 1 billion, the biggest investment in the Plzen brewery since 1989.

Prazdroj, a unit of the SABMiller group, raised sales by 4 percent year-on-year to almost CZK 13.6 billion in the financial year from April 2005 to end of March 2006.

Net profit grew to almost CZK 3.4 billion from less than CZK 3 billion. Prazdroj will spend CZK 2 billion on dividends this year, flat from 2005.

Japan: Kirin plans to cash in 30% of beer sales income from shipments to overseas by 2015

Kirin Brewery Company Ltd. is seemingly about to make use of its Chinese operations in order to ship beer which was initially brewed for the South Korean beer market. As reports say, Kirin’ Ichiban Shibori brand will be brewed by its Chinese affiliates in order to make China the production ground for all Asian beer markets in which Kirin identified commercial interest, Japanese media released.

The brewer’s company strategy is also designed to allow Kirin to generate 30% of its sales income form overseas beer markets by 2015, or the domestic beer market is now hardly recovering from a stagnation phase.

As beer sales fall 50% bellow of the market for five of the most important Japanese breweries, they decided to put their highlighting on low-alcohol drinks, like the chuhai market section which courses a boom period.

Latvia: Aldaris posts a 12% increase of beer sales May 2006

The Latvian brewery Aldaris, a joint venture between Carlsberg, Scottish & Newcastle’s and Baltic Beverages Holding, has sold over 63,400 hl of beer in last May, 12% more year-on-year. This increase was mainly motivated by the Hockey World Championship which was held in Riga. Glass bottled “Aldaris Gaisais” was sold alone 10,000 hl – 73% more year-on-year, The Union of Russian Brewers informed June 26.

Referring to the non-alcohol beer, this segment saw a triple-increase: from 27,000 litres in May 2005 up to 75,000 litres of beer last May. Bottled water sales rose roughly to 13,320 hl, which is 1.5 times more than the records of May 2005.

Accordingly, beer sales exceeded twice the annual average beer sales recorded by the brewer up to 20,000 hl of beer.

The legendary history of the traditional Latvian beer brewery Aldaris started centuries ago, in 1865. Nowadays Aldaris is the biggest brewery in Latvia and one of the biggest in the Baltic.

Netherlands: Dutch Prime Minister opens Holland Malt’s new maltings in Eemshaven

Yesterday, June 27, Dutch Prime Minister Jan Peter Balkenende officially opened Holland Malt’s new maltings in Eemshaven, Groningen, the Netherlands.

UK: Crisp Malting Group seeks new partnership

A new three-year contract for Norfolk malting barley has been launched by one of the country's leading independent maltsters, Rural Affairs posted June 25.

Bob King, commercial director of Crisp Malting Group, outlined a proposal to run from the 2007 harvest to Norfolk farmers at its base at Great Ryburgh, near Fakenham.

He told the 60 specialist malting growers that Crisp would work on an “open book” approach with two local agricultural merchants and farmers' representatives.

The Crisp group, which was taken over by a consortium of investors including David Thomp-son, chairman of Wolverhampton & Dudley Breweries, is keen to forge a new partnership for the medium and long term with growers and merchants.

Mr King said: “There is increased competition for Norfolk barley. We've got barley going to Scotland, to the near continent and into Suffolk.”

On the rising costs of moving barley, he said: “We have a situa-tion where we move 25,000 to 30,000 tonnes of barley into Norfolk to replace malting barley going out of Norfolk.”

Canada: There is a notable decline in capacity expected for the malting barley sector

Canada’s malting capacity is expected to decrease by about 10%, to 2,990 tonnes per day, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada published on June 22 in its Bi-weekly Bulletin. The decrease in malting capacity is attributed to a steadily declining domestic market for beer and reduced prospects for exports of barley malt.

Reduced beer consumption in Canada is reflective of an aging population and changes in consumption patterns. In addition to the lower per capita consumption of beer normally associated with an aging population, Canadians are consuming more imported beers, which reduces domestic demand for barley malt. As well, there has been significant growth in the discounted beer market which typically uses less barley malt in the production process.

For the last 20 years, Canada’s share of the export market for barley malt has trended upward. More recently, that trend seems to have temporarily reversed. For example, exports of barley malt to Japan have been negatively affected by increased consumption of low-malt and no-malt beer beverages.

Canada’s malting industry processes about 1.0 Mt of malting barley annually, of which about 270,000 t is for the domestic beer industry.

New Zealand: A new generation of hops is being developed

A new generation of hops for beer is being developed by researchers in New Zealand, as the brewing industry looks to science to help it catch up with changing consumer tastes, Beverage Daily released June 20.

Scientists at New Zealand's HortResearch said they have mixed together hop varieties from New Zealand and Europe to create new strains that will produce tastier, richer beer.
So-called premium beers with stronger aromas have increasingly held up otherwise stagnant beer markets across Western Europe and the US over the last couple of years.

“Light, fizzy beers are losing popularity and we are seeing an increased demand for a broader number of styles such as dark beers, pale ales, and pilsners,” said Ron Beatson, hop breeder at HortResearch.

Market research backs him up. So-called craft beers in the US outperformed the country's shrinking beer market there over the last year, while premium brands in Europe, such as Leffe and Grimbergen, have continue to defy market growth problems in some countries there.

Beatson said the work to cross European and New Zealand hop varieties to target changing consumer tastes had gone well so far.

Assessing the Impact of the Level of Diastatic Power Enzymes and Their Thermostability on the Hydrolysis of Starch During Wort Production to Predict Malt Fermentability

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 63(4):185-198, 2005 In this study, commercially produced malts were used for small-scale simulated mashing trials to investigate the impact of differences in the level and thermostability of malt diastatic power (DP) enzymes on the resultant wort fermentability. A modified European Brewery Convention/ American Society Brewing Chemists mashing protocol was used with mash-in temperatures ranging between 45 and 76°C for full-malt and 30% rice adjunct mashes. Malt extract yield varied little with mashing temperature for most varieties in this temperature range. However, the fermentability, maltose content, and free amino nitrogen of that extract was considerably affected by mashing temperature with 65°C achieving the highest fermentability for all malt varieties. Multilinear regression analysis of full-malt and rice adjunct mashing trials at 65°C using 43 commercial malts showed that the level of a-amylase and total limit dextrinase activity, Kolbach Index, and the total ß-amylase activity level and thermostability were the most important malt quality predictors of wort fermentability. These conclusions suggest that the conventional DP assessment could be replaced with the measurement of its component enzymes outlined above so that maltsters could better satisfy brewers malt quality expectations by blending and defining their malt quality in terms of these fermentability predicting factors. This information would be particularly useful to brewers who brew with multiple varieties and blends from different suppliers.
