Germany: Carlsberg Deutschland sells Landskron Brauerei

Carlsberg Deutschland has sold Landskron Brauerei in Görlitz to further optimize the production structure in Germany. Another reason is that the local brand Landskron no longer matches with Carlsberg Deutschland's brand strategy, the company released June 29.

Purchaser is Dr. Lobeck Stiftung which also owns a brewery in Schwelm. The price of Landskron Brauerei will not be disclosed. Landskron Brauerei has 75 employees and a capacity of 0,2m hl per year.

After the sale of Landskron Brauerei – effective as of 1 July – Carlsberg Deutschland runs four plants: In Hamburg, in Lübz, in Dresden and in Braunschweig.

Carlsberg Deutschland employs 1360 people and has a total capacity of 7,9m hl per year.

Carlsberg is one of the leading brewing groups in the world, with a large portfolio of beer and soft drinks brands. Its flagship brand – Carlsberg – is one of the fastest-growing and best-known beer brands in the world. More than 30,000 people work for Carlsberg at 92 local production sites in 48 countries, and its products are sold in more than 150 markets. In 2005 Carlsberg sold more than 100 million hectolitres of beer, which is about 83 million bottles of beer a day.

Romania: The domestic beer market is approaching to a record sales level of EUR 700 million in 2006

The Romanian beer market will record sales of nearly EUR 700 million, Rompres communicated June 27. The increase is about to touch every market segment, Banii Nostri released. While specialists argue that the increases is namely explained by the increasing popularity of the PET recipients, others estimate that ”Finally, beer has won its place on the Romanians table”. The World Football Championship has largely contributed the progress of the Romanian beer in 2006.

On the other side, according to the Romanian Brewers Association, the present ascendant tendency continues the growing trend which was recorded during the first three months of 2006, when 1.85 million hl of beer were sold, by 16% more year-on-year. Statistic figures are showing that the average beer consumption per capita is nowadays 70 litres annually, against 66 litres in 2004.

The domestic beer market totalled 1.52 million hl of beer in 2004, by 4.7% more year-on-year.

Canada: Sleeman Breweries Ltd. low share prices isn’t enough to help the brewer find a buyer

Share prices in Sleeman Breweries Ltd. are falling amid reports an international company isn't looking to bid on the Guelph brewer, Guelph Mercury posted June 29.

What it means for Sleeman's future is still unclear.

The Globe and Mail reported June 8 that SABMiller PLC, the British company that owns the Miller Genuine Draft and Pilsner Urquell brands, would not likely bid for the Guelph brewer. Since then, shares have dropped from CA$16.10 on the Toronto Stock Exchange to CA$14 June 28.

But the lower share prices won't likely be enough to help the company woo a buyer, according to analyst Peter Holden of Veritas Investment Research, who said Sleeman is overpriced. "I still think it's a long way from being a bargain," he said.

He noted that the Rolling Rock brewer, a Pennsylvania-based brewer slightly smaller than Sleeman, sold its brand last month for the equivalent of CA$92 million.

Holden estimated Sleeman's brands, breweries and debt would cost a buyer about CA$340 million to acquire.

"I don't think there's much chance of a sale at those prices," he said.

China: Beer Industry recorded total sales of CNY15.9 billion in the first quarter of 2006

Chinese brewers are looking to the World Cup and new marketing strategies to help them boost beer consumption and absorb some of the sector’s substantial unused capacity, Decision News Media released June 29.

After several years of low margins, China's beer sector has begun to consolidate, allowing the bigger players to increase profits. But even the bigger firms need to do more to improve efficiency, according to Adam Zhou, analyst at KGI Securities.

“Tsingtao had a capacity utilization of about 70 per cent during 2005,” he told AP-Foodtechnology.com. The industry average is around 80 per cent.

But stronger sales during the World Cup, as well as hotter than average temperatures in June, will lift consumption and demand.

In addition, some companies are investing in new marketing campaigns to boost sales. Tsingtao has rolled out a football programme in collaboration with CCTV, and is also looking to roll out its sponsorship of the annual Qingdao beer festival to festivals in other cities.

“In the first stages of growth, during 2001-2001, brewers tried to compete on capacity rather than the market. There was a flood of low margin products.”

India & Singapore: APB Makes further strategic investment in India

Riding on its second wave of regional expansion, Asia Pacific Breweries Ltd (APB) is about to add more fresh froth in India’s largest beer consuming state, Andhra Pradesh, through a joint venture partnership with Jaipuria Beverages & Food Industries Private Limited (“Jaipuria”) which is associated with the Jaipuria Group, one of the largest manufacturers of soft drinks in India, the company released June 30.

Called Pearl Breweries Private Limited (PBPL), the new joint venture company of which APB holds the majority stake of 67%, will build a greenfield brewery with an initial brewing capacity of 250,000 hectolitres just outside Hyderabad, the economic heartbeat and city of Andhra Pradesh. The brewery is expected to commence operation by end 2007.

The initial investment in PBPL is estimated to be USD 15 million (approximately S$ 24 million) out of which the equity contribution is estimated not to exceed USD 10 million (approximately S$16 million), which will be contributed by APB and Jaipuria in proportion to their respective shareholdings. APB’s contribution will be funded through a combination of internal resources and external borrowings.

The joint venture marks APB’s second investment in India which follows its investment in Aurangabad Breweries Limited (AUBL) in May 2006.

Canada: Canada Malting Company Limited to buy Mariapolis elevator owned by Delmar Commodities Ltd.

A Winkler-based grain company and Canada’s largest maltster are working on a deal which could ensure the future of a southern Manitoba shortline railway currently up for sale, Manitoba Co-operator posted June 29.

Canada Malting Company Limited is offering to buy an elevator at Mariapolis currently owned by Delmar Commodities Ltd., the Co-operator has learned.

Mariapolis is located at the western end of an 80-mile stretch of rail track owned and operated by Southern Manitoba Railway.

Southern Manitoba Railway (SMNR) was listed for sale in early April. If no buyer is found, the company could apply to the province to have the rail line abandoned.

It’s considered unlikely that Canada Malting would buy a grain facility on the line if it were unsure of the railway’s long-term future.

“I would think that would be an important component,” said Steve Van Wagenen, SMNR’s general manager.

Van Wagenen said he has talked to several prospective buyers for the rail line, including Delmar Commodities and Canada Malting.

“I’ve talked to them and others,” he said from his office in Salt Lake City, Utah, adding, “There’ve been no firm discussions about purchase as of yet.”

World: Barley markets were generally weaker in June, according to IGC

Barley markets were generally weaker in June, with EU and Black Sea values down on slow export demand and a mostly favourable production outlook, International Grains Council (IGC) commented in its Grain Market Report on June 29.

2006 barley production is forecast by IGC at 147 million tonnes, 1 million tonnes down from last month, but 7 million tonnes up from 2005. Reductions in the EU and Canada more than offset an increase in Russia. The consumption forecast is unchanged at 147 million tonnes (143 million tonnes). Lower production and better malting quality will reduce barley feeding in Canada, but feed demand is strengthening in Near East Asia.

World barley trade is projected at 17.4 million tonnes, 0.1 million tonnes above the previous forecast but down 0.3m from 2005/06. Russia’s export projection is increased on a better crop estimate but Black Sea competition may reduce EU sales. Forecast barley stocks at the end of 2006/07 are increased by 0.7 million tonnes, to 28.2 million tonnes (0.3 million tonnes more than a year ago), because of an increase in the EU.

New Zealand: A new generation of hops is being developed

A new generation of hops for beer is being developed by researchers in New Zealand, as the brewing industry looks to science to help it catch up with changing consumer tastes, Beverage Daily released June 20.

Scientists at New Zealand's HortResearch said they have mixed together hop varieties from New Zealand and Europe to create new strains that will produce tastier, richer beer.
So-called premium beers with stronger aromas have increasingly held up otherwise stagnant beer markets across Western Europe and the US over the last couple of years.

“Light, fizzy beers are losing popularity and we are seeing an increased demand for a broader number of styles such as dark beers, pale ales, and pilsners,” said Ron Beatson, hop breeder at HortResearch.

Market research backs him up. So-called craft beers in the US outperformed the country's shrinking beer market there over the last year, while premium brands in Europe, such as Leffe and Grimbergen, have continue to defy market growth problems in some countries there.

Beatson said the work to cross European and New Zealand hop varieties to target changing consumer tastes had gone well so far.

Assessing the Impact of the Level of Diastatic Power Enzymes and Their Thermostability on the Hydrolysis of Starch During Wort Production to Predict Malt Fermentability

Abstract:
J. Am. Soc. Brew. Chem. 63(4):185-198, 2005 In this study, commercially produced malts were used for small-scale simulated mashing trials to investigate the impact of differences in the level and thermostability of malt diastatic power (DP) enzymes on the resultant wort fermentability. A modified European Brewery Convention/ American Society Brewing Chemists mashing protocol was used with mash-in temperatures ranging between 45 and 76°C for full-malt and 30% rice adjunct mashes. Malt extract yield varied little with mashing temperature for most varieties in this temperature range. However, the fermentability, maltose content, and free amino nitrogen of that extract was considerably affected by mashing temperature with 65°C achieving the highest fermentability for all malt varieties. Multilinear regression analysis of full-malt and rice adjunct mashing trials at 65°C using 43 commercial malts showed that the level of a-amylase and total limit dextrinase activity, Kolbach Index, and the total ß-amylase activity level and thermostability were the most important malt quality predictors of wort fermentability. These conclusions suggest that the conventional DP assessment could be replaced with the measurement of its component enzymes outlined above so that maltsters could better satisfy brewers malt quality expectations by blending and defining their malt quality in terms of these fermentability predicting factors. This information would be particularly useful to brewers who brew with multiple varieties and blends from different suppliers.
