China: SABMiller associate announces acquisitions in Zhejiang and Anhui provinces

China Resources Snow Breweries Limited ("CR Snow"), an associate of SABMiller plc and a subsidiary of China Resources Enterprise, Limited ("CRE"), announced July 24 that it has agreed to acquire a 100% equity interest in Zhejiang Yinyan Brewery Company Limited or "Yinyan Brewery" for a cash consideration of US$42.3 million, FIN24 released July 24. In addition, CR Snow will acquire the brewing related assets of the Anhui Huaibei Xiangwang Brewery Company Limited or "Xiangwang Brewery" for a consideration of US$10.1 million.

Japan & China: Asahi Breweries to invest ¥800 million aiming to increase Beijing plant capacity

Asahi Breweries Ltd. will invest JPY800 million to double capacity at its plant in Beijing, Shanghai Daily reported citing Japanese newspaper Nihon Keizai, China Knowledge released July 24.

According to the report, the new equipment at the brewery is expected to start operating in April.

The report also mentioned that with Asahi’s plan to open a new brewery in Zhejiang province in May, the combined capacities of the Bejing and Zhejiang breweries will raise the brewer’s annual capacity to 820,000 kiloliters, the largest among Japanese breweries in China.

Japanese beer companies are shifting their attention to China due to poor sales in their own country; and major beer companies like Asahi Breweries, Suntory and Kirin Brewery are attracted to their neighboring country where demand for beer is growing.

Last year brewers made 300 million hl of beer in China, an increase of 5% over the same period the previous year, more than in any other nation.

In 2004, China beat the U.S. to become the top consumer of beer in the world.

However, foreign beer-makers find it difficult to make profits in China due to Chinese drinkers’ preference for cheaper locally-brewed beer.

Foreign brewers like Foster’s and Lion Nathan have pulled out of China ...

Hungary: Brau Union Hungaria Breweries Plc. dominates 30% of the domestic beer market

In an effort to produce beer of the highest quality, Brau Union Hungaria Breweries complies with the latest standards and applies a Quality Control System compliant with localised Hungarian Standard (MSZEN) ISO 9001:2001, and runs an MSZEN ISO 14001-compliant HACCP-integrated Environment Management System, The Association of Hungarian Brewers (AHB) published in its 2005 Annual Report.

In 2005, a new Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) system from Japan was also introduced to further improved quality and production efficiency.

Brau Union Hungaria Breweries is operating in Hungary as an affiliate of the international Heineken Group. The history of the Group and the famous Dutch Heineken beer dates back to 1863, when its founder Gerard Adriaan Heineken purchased the largest brewery in the Netherlands, known as De Hooiberg (the “Haystack”). With a mission to brew the best quality beer in the world, Mr. Heineken and his colleague, Dr. Elion (a former student of Louis Pasteur in Paris) developed the famous A-yeast. This yeast still guarantees the special unique flavour of the beer today and has contributed to making Heineken the “most international” beer of the world, marketed in 175 countries.

USA: Beer imports of USA were 2/3 of Mexican origin in 2005

Corona Extra, Modelo Especial and Tecate are 3 of top-4 beer brands which represented nearly 40% of all beer exports to USA in 2005. And they are all of Mexican origin. Shipments of these brands progressed by 1.42 million hl exceeding 2/3 of all import growth, analysts estimated.

Barley News
UK: Heatwave to heavily reflect on winter barley crop

Winter barley has been cut at less than 11 per cent moisture content in the Borders and Fife in one of the earliest harvest starts on record, The Scotsman published July 22.

More usually, grain moisture contents - normally at least 15% in Scotland, often higher - have been about 12 per cent. Harvest has started five to ten days earlier than usual in the continuing July heatwave.

Cutting started in the south of England well over a week ago and it is now estimated that about 40 per cent of all UK winter barley has been cleared.

No-one is anxious to talk about specific yields, with "average" the general description, but Home-Grown Cereals Authority estimates indicate about 6.7 tonnes per hectare so far, against 6.5 tonnes last year.

However, that refers mainly to England, and a spokesman said: "It is still anyone's guess what the final figure will be."

Dr Keith Dawson, the Scottish Agricultural College's principal crop consultant, remained "quietly confident" about crop prospects in Scotland. He said: "Having seen some pretty poor crops in some European countries recently, I would far rather be in Scotland this year."

Lower quality grain for animal feed is making, if farmers are ...

Ukraine: Barley crop estimate lifted to 11.8 million t

The information-analytical agency APK-Inform increased their forecast of grains and legumes harvest in Ukraine in 2006 - from 33.4 to 35.2 million metric tons (MT) on a cleaned weight basis, down 3 million MT from gross grain yield in 2005, AgReport Farm Market News reported July 25.

According to the last estimations of the agency harvest of barley is forecasted at 11.8 million MT (against 9 million MT).

The experts increased their forecast of harvest after final data publication of State Statistics Committee concerning sowing areas of grains in Ukraine in 2006 and taking into account yield estimations of Meteorological Center.

As it was informed by APK-Inform, according to the official statistics in 2006 Ukrainian farmers had sowed 14.66 million ha area under grains and legumes, down 2.3% from 2005 index. At the same time areas under barley increased by 18% to 5.3 million hl.

Hops News
Germany: Hop prices rise in the medium term

Hop acreage continues to decline worldwide. In 2005, only slightly less than 50,000 ha was farmed, over 600 ha less than in the previous year, Barth-Haas Group released July 20.

According to the 2005/2006 Barth Report, hop acreage in the world’s biggest hop growing country, Germany, alone fell by more than 300 ha to 17,161 ha, although the production volume of 34,466 metric tons was slightly positive. Nevertheless, the industry anticipates changes in the market situation in the medium term, which could lead to higher hop prices.

According to Stephan Barth, hop trader and managing partner of Joh. Barth & Sohn in Nuremberg and one of the world’s leading hop marketers, acreage is expected to decrease by a further 400 ha in 2006. In his opinion, the pain threshold has been reached in terms of simply being able to satisfy the 2 – 3 percent annual growth in world beer demand. He expects prices to rise in the medium term, adding that business is already ”very hectic” today. This is because production of the highly sought-after high-alpha varieties alone fell worldwide by 226 metric tons to 7,877 metric tons in 2005. Price increases are already being reported, as the stocks ...

Storage Conditions Affect the Quality of Malting Barley

R. Reuss, J. Cassells and R. Nischwitz

CSIRO Stored Grain Research Laboratory, Canberra, ACT 2601, Australia
Barrett Burston Malting Co, Richmond, Victoria 3121, Australia

INTRODUCTION: The effect of storage conditions on the quality of barley is of considerable importance to the barley, malting and brewing industry. Storage can either reduce barley quality (Woods et al. 1994, White et al. 1999), or increase maltability (Woonton et al. 2001). To maximise quality of previously stored barley entering the malt house, the influence of storage environments on post-harvest maturation and changes in malting quality of contemporary Australian barley varieties needs to be better understood. Here we present some preliminary results of a three year project that aims to understand the interaction between storage conditions and barley quality. Samples of the malting barley varieties Stirling, Sloop and Gairdner were selected for storage trials, and stored under controlled conditions. The quality of the grain was then followed using germination tests, kernel colour measurements, enzyme analysis, Rapid Visco Analyser (RVA) tests and malting quality analysis.
