Brewery News
Canada: Sleeman Breweries Ltd. attracting four bidders

At least four brewery companies are expected to make a bid for Guelph, Ont., based Sleeman Breweries Ltd., as the auction of the C$220-million beer maker enters its final stage, The Globe and Mail released July 31.

Molson Coors Brewing Co., Dutch brewer Royal Grolsch NV, Japan's Sapporo Breweries Ltd. and Labatt, owned by Belgium's InBev, could bid for Sleeman, the paper said, citing industry and investment banking sources. All are expected to make formal bids by a Sleeman-imposed deadline of the end of July 31, according to industry and investment banking sources.

Sleeman refused to confirm or deny the reports and wouldn't say when it hopes to announce a buyer.

Shares of Sleeman Breweries jumped nearly 15 per cent Monday after published reports. Sleeman shares gained C$1.95 to close at C$15.25 in trading on the Toronto Stock Exchange, for a total stock market value of more than C$255 million.

Sleeman, which holds 7 per cent of the Canadian beer market, announced a "strategic review" in May that could include the sale of the Guelph, Ontario-based company. Sources say the brewer hopes to announce a buyer by October.

Bids for Sleeman are expected to come in at more than CA$15 a share, according ...

Fomento Económico Mexicano, S.A. de C.V. (“FEMSA”) announced July 28 its operational and financial results for the second quarter and first half of 2006. 2Q 2006 consolidated total revenues increased 13%, reaching Ps. 31.869 billion. “A robust consumer environment continued through the second quarter in our main markets, particularly Mexico, and we capitalized on it as our beer operations delivered compelling volume growth with strong pricing. We continued to open Oxxo stores at a rapid pace, surpassing 700 net new stores opened in the past twelve months, and Coca-Cola FEMSA delivered solid growth in the face of tough year-on-year comparisons. Specific events such as the FIFA World Cup and the run-up to Mexican elections helped spur demand for all our businesses. The FEMSA team continues to execute on our strategy, and we are well on our way to achieving another banner year for our company,” commented José Antonio Fernández, Chairman and CEO of FEMSA.

Colombia: Bavaria first-half net revenues rose 12.3%

Colombian brewer Bavaria posted net profit July 31 of 168.6 billion pesos ($64 million) for the first half of 2006 as lower costs helped it reverse a loss of 38.2 billion pesos in the same period last year, Reuters released August 01.

The unit of London-based SABMiller said in a statement that net revenue rose 12.3 percent from a year earlier to 1.36 trillion pesos (516.5 million).

Sales volumes rose 7.9 percent in the first semester from a year earlier thanks to a stronger Colombian economy and more investment in its brands.

In the first quarter of 2006, the company - which said its results were also helped by recent exchange rate fluctuations - had posted a loss of 31.05 billion pesos. ($1 = 2,633 pesos)

Vietnam: Beer industry increased 8-12% year-on-year over the last five years

The beer brewing industry has become an attractive field for investment with more projects awaiting licensing and many operational plants planning to increase production, VietNamNet Bridge released July 31.

In 2005, Vietnam produced 15 million hl of beer, an increase of 25% over the target volume. The figure is expected to rise to 17 million hl in 2006.

The brewing industry has posted impressive growth of 8-12% per annum over the last five years. In 2004, total beer output reached 14 million hl, or 17% more than the volume targeted for 2005. The average consumption volume per capita now is 17 litres a year, double the volume in 1997.

It is expected that by 2010, total beer output would be 25 million hl/year, or output per capita of be 28 litres/year.

More investors are investigating beer production as a viable option. At the end of June, the Ministry of Planning and Investment granted license to a brewery in Binh Duong province, a joint venture between the Vietnam Dairy Products Joint Stock Company (Vinamilk) and the Netherlands’ SAB Miller. Once operational, which is scheduled for this year’s end, the plant will put out 100mil litres of beer per annum.

Net sales, income from continuing operations (after-tax) (1), net income and earnings per share increased in the quarter compared to the same period a year ago, PRNewswire released August 01.

Second quarter 2006 net sales of $1.58 billion increased 2.3 percent from the second quarter 2005. Sales volume grew 2.3 percent to 11.4 million barrels, or 13.4 million hectoliters (hls), compared to the second quarter a year ago. All $ amounts in U.S. dollars.

During the quarter, Molson Coors continued to implement merger-related synergies and cost cutting programs across the Company. In total, Molson Coors achieved approximately $27 million in synergies and other cost savings during the quarter. EU: Malt prices have moved up sharply over the past months

Malt prices have moved up sharply over the past months, market analysts commented on August 1. In domestic markets maltsters had concluded contracts in 2005 for delivery in 2006 at levels of € 230,-/240,- delivered breweries. Initial contracts this year for 2007 were done at prices of € 260,-/265,-, but meantime offers are around € 280,-/285,-.

Based on an average barley price of € 155,- for the crop year and € 80,- malting margin, that does not even give the maltster a real profit. Export prices for 2rs malt are € 280,-/285,- FOB seaport in bulk in vessel and € 15,- to 20,- more in bulk in container.

Russia: “Russky Solod” Malt Company delivered more than 60,000 t malt in July, 2006

“Russky Solod Malt Company, member of the Avangard Bank Holding delivered more than 60,000 t malt to its brewery customers during July, 2006, two times more than in the same period last year. Totally, more than 150,000 t malt was supplied to the brewery clients in the period May – July, 2006, the company released July 31.

“This unusual vast growth in light brewing malt consumption is a result of significant growth of beer production due to an abnormally warm early summer and problems on the hard liquor market” said OAO “Russky Solod Board Chairman, Kirill Minovalov”.

At present two of the three malting plants of the company have ceased production to undergo maintenance work as quality raw material for malt production is currently not available. Production is planned to be resumed when new crop barley will arrive to the plants.

“Russky Solod Malt Company is the largest in Russia and one of the largest producers of light brewing malt in Europe.

Barley News
World: IGC posted a cut of 2 million tonnes in its barley production forecast

Hot, dry conditions in the EU, the US, Canada, Turkey and Australia, result in a cut of 2 million tons in the barley production forecast to 145 million tons, still 5 million more than last year. Conditions remain favourable for Russia’s crop, the International Grains Council published in its Grain Market Report Nr. 358 from July 27.

The consumption forecast is unchanged at 147 million tons, 3 million more than in 2005/06. Improved competitiveness in relation to wheat should boost barley feeding in the EU, but tighter supplies of feed barley will reduce consumption in Canada.

There is also no change in the trade forecast of 17.4 million tons. North Africa’s reduced import needs are responsible for the 0.3m tons drop from last year. Exports by Canada, Australia and Turkey may be smaller than previously forecast, but those of Ukraine and Russia are expected to be larger.

World barley stocks at the end of 2006/07 are projected to fall to 25.2 million tons, 3.0 million tons lower than last month due to the smaller crop estimates.

The International Grains Council (IGC) is an intergovernmental organisation concerned with grains trade. It administers the Grains Trade Convention, 1995. The IGC Secretariat, based in London ...

Predicting Preharvest Sprouting Susceptibility in Barley: A Model Based on Temperature during Grain Filling

M. Veronica Rodriguez, Martin Margineda, Juan F. Gonzalez-Martin, Pedro Insausti, and Roberto L. Benech-Arnold

ABSTRACT: Preharvest sprouting (PHS) susceptibility in cereals is a conse- quence of low grain dormancy before harvest. Dormancy loss rate depends on genotype and may also be affected by environmental conditions during seed formation. To establish a quantitative relation- ship between temperature and PHS susceptibility, a malting barley Hordeum vulgare L.) cultivar, ‘Quilmes Palomar’, was sown on differ- ent dates over a 3-yr period to obtain a range of thermal conditions during grain fillin (soil type: Aeric Argiudoll). The period from pollination to physiological maturity (PM) was adjusted to a thermal time (TT) scale, which was then divided into 50 C-day intervals. Mean temperature within each interval was calculated for the different sow- ing dates. Grain dormancy was monitored using a germination index GI). We sought a linear relationship between temperature during grain filling and GI at some moment after PM.
