Brewery News
Denmark: Carlsberg A/S net revenue climbed 8% to a total of DKK 19.3 billion as at 30 June 2006

Carlsberg A/S announced August 09 its financial statement as at 30 June. Beer sales in the first half were 33.9m hl (calculated pro rata), which is 6% higher than sales in the same period of last year, corrected for loss of the volume contribution from Hite Brewery. This trend is attributable to higher sales in BBH and Asia, and the good weather during the World Cup also contributed to a positive trend in Western Europe in the second quarter.

The Carlsberg brand achieved an increase of 5%, including a significant contribution from Western Europe. The Tuborg brand continued to grow, with a global increase of just under 12%, primarily as a result of strong development in BBH.

Net revenue rose by 8% to DKK 19,251m, driven by good development in Western Europe and continued progress in BBH. Activities in Asia also contributed increasing revenues, partly as a result of acquisitions made and partly as a result of continued organic growth.

Operating profit before special items was DKK 1,722m, an increase of 30% on the same period last year. Excluding the earnings contribution from Hite Brewery in 2005, operating profit for brewing activities increased by DKK 419m or 34% as a result of a ...

Netherlands & Spain: Heineken to sell existing brewery site in Seville

Heineken N.V. announced August 07 that its subsidiary Heineken España, S.A. in Spain has signed an agreement for the divestment of the land and buildings of the current brewery site in Seville. As the result of the sale Heineken will realise a book gain of €329 million before tax in the second half of 2006, which will be treated as an exceptional item. The amount of the book gain after tax is €279 million. Heineken España is in the process of constructing a new brewery just outside of Seville and will abandon the current site, which has a size of more than 150,000 m2, on 31 March 2008.

The land and buildings will be sold to the Spanish development group Viviendas Ciudad de Sevilla, S.A., which is part of the Grupo Urvasco, S.A. Parties have agreed not to disclose the consideration for the transaction. Heineken will use part of the proceeds of the sale to repay debt incurred to finance the construction of the new brewery in Seville. The sale of the land is consistent with Heineken’s strategy to release cash that is locked up in non-core assets.

Heineken N.V. is the most international brewer in the world. The Heineken brand ...

UK: Scottish-Newcastle revenue up 6.0% at £1,994 million for the six months to June 30 2006

Scottish-Newcastle Breweries announced August 08 its interim results for six months to 30 June 2006. S&N UK has firmly established its market leadership with around 26% beer market share despite shedding 1% market share by passing the control of MGD and Beck’s back to the brand owners and the licensing of Kestrel in 2005.

Adjusting for this portfolio rationalisation, the branded beer and cider business showed strong growth with 4.9% volume increase and net sales up 6.4%. This compares with total beer and cider market volume growth of 2.8%, 2.2% in the on-trade and 10.4% in the off-trade. The top four brands, Foster’s, Kronenbourg 1664, John Smith’s and Strongbow continue to grow well ahead of the market with volumes up 8.9% and net sales up 10.3%.

In the UK, S&N maintained marketing spend at over 10% of branded net sales in the six months to June.
Investing in innovation continued to be a priority; new products launched during the period included the premium ciders Bulmers Original and Jacques. In the UK, we are driving a virtuous growth cycle of higher A&P spend leading to higher brand sales and margin, which in turn has allowed higher spend on A&P and technical innovation.

Switzerland: Beer consumption dropped by 23% during last 15 years

According to a local publication study which tried to explain the vertiginous drop of beer consumption in Switzerland, beer saw its love-quote downgrading since a few years ago despite recent Football World Championship fever and extreme heat, TSR informed August 06.

Local sources said beer consumption dropped 23% from 1990 till 2005, from 71litres per capita annually down to 55 litres.

This “performance” is a very worrying one if it’s referred to similar Czech, German and Austrian figures which rank from 160, 116 and 109 liters respectively on an annual basis.

The key factors which lead to this situation were said to be the anti-alcoholic campaigns and all related Government’s politics which were undertook to this purpose. In addition, there is always a strong competition coming from wine which holds a solid share among domestic drinkers’ preferences.

The conducted study questioned it-self if beer really makes people fat, as the adage says, an admission which negatively reflects itself upon beer consumption. A dietician estimated that reasonable beer drinking doesn’t makes you fat. With only 130 calories for 3 dl of brew, it doesn’t worth more calories than a fruit juice - 120.

The study also unveiled that 83% of consummated beer in Switzerland is ...

Latin America: InBev announces closing of the AmBev transaction to increase its shareholding in Quilmes Industrial S.A. ("Quinsa")

InBev announced August 9 that AmBev has closed the transaction with Beverage Associates Corp. ("BAC") to acquire all of BAC's remaining shares in Quinsa for a total purchase price of 1.25 billion U.S. dollars. AmBev's equity interest in Quinsa has increased from 56.72% to 91.18% of its total share capital.

AmBev expects the transaction to increase synergies between the operations of Quinsa and AmBev throughout Argentina, Uruguay, Paraguay, Bolivia and Chile. The transaction reflects AmBev's commitment to grow in these markets.

InBev is a publicly traded company based in Leuven, Belgium. The company's origins date back to 1366, and today it is the leading global brewer by volume. InBev's strategy is to strengthen its local platforms by building significant positions in the world's major beer markets through organic growth, world-class efficiency, targeted external growth, and by putting consumers first. InBev has a portfolio of more than 200 brands, including Stella Artois®, Brahma®, Beck's®, Leffe® and Skol® - the third-largest selling beer brand in the world. InBev employs some 77,000 people, running operations in over 30 countries across the Americas, Europe and Asia Pacific. In 2005, InBev realized 11.7 billion euro revenue.

Boston Beer Co., Inc., a provider of malt beverages and hard cider products, announced the second quarter financial results, reporting a profit that increased from last year on higher revenues. In the recent quarter, the company's earnings per share were well above analysts' estimates, Trading Markets learned from RTTNews August 08.

The Boston, Massachusetts-based Boston Beer's second quarter net income increased to $7.99 million or $0.56 per share from $5.14 million or $0.35 per share in the corresponding quarter of the prior-year. On average, four analysts' polled by First Call/Thomson Financial expected the company to report second quarter earnings of $0.38 per share.

Reflecting a 22.8% increase in core shipment volume, Boston Beer's quarterly revenues rose to $87.64 million from $68.49 million in the same quarter of the previous-year. The company's second quarter net revenues increased 28.7% to $79.33 million from $61.63 million last year.

Malt News
EU: Malting capacities are at low level, at least temporary

Analyst said August 01 there is a lack of malting capacity in EU, at least temporary. The Grandes Malteries Modernes in Lille will stop production at the end of August, two Alba Domu factories in Hungary with an annual capacity of 110,000 tonnes have not produced malt since December of 2005, and the Weissheimer factories in Germany, capacity 255.000 tonnes, have run down their production since the new announcement of insolvency a few weeks ago.

Barley News
USA & Canada: Barley forecasts stressed by heat and drought

The USDA reduced its barley production forecast from 4.46 to 4.13 million tonnes. Crops are being stressed by heat and drought, specifically in Montana and North Dakota, analysts explained August 01.

It is too warm and too dry in Western Canada as well. The CWB expects a crop of 10.15 million tonnes of barley for the Western Provinces and maximum 11 million tons for the whole country.

In view of stressed crops in Canada and apparent problems in the other malting barley countries of the world the Canadian Wheat Board has increased its PRO for 2row malting barley by CA$13.00 to 174.00 per ton.

Canada: Barley supply expected to fall by 13%

Barley production is forecasted to decrease by 15%, due to lower area and yields, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada released August 04 in its Grains and Oilseeds Outlook. Supply is expected to fall by 13%. Exports are forecast to decrease by 8%, as lower feed barley exports are only partially offset by higher exports of malting barley.

Despite lower exports and domestic feed use, carry-out stocks are forecast to fall significantly. The average off-Board feed barley price (No.1 CW, in-store Lethbridge) is forecast to increase by $20/t from 2005-06 (figures in CA$). The CWB PRO for No. 1 CW feed barley for Pool A in 2006-07 is $124/t, vs. $125/t for Pool A in 2005-06. The CWB PRO for SS2R malting barley is $174/t vs. $171/t for 2005-06, due to lower expected exportable supply in Australia and strong import demand from the US.

Scientific Digest
Agrochemicals Accepted by the British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) and Brewing Research International (BRi) for use on Barley and Hops

The Purpose of the BBPA’s and BRi’s List
The BRi and BBPA aim to test agrochemicals which, because of their chemical nature or timing of application to barley or hops could potentially affect either the malting, brewing or fermentation processes, or could cause undesirable off-flavours in the finished beer. In the EU, Council Directive 93/71/EEC (Annex III) requires the effects of pesticides on transformation processes to be taken into account and requires an evaluation of the possible occurrence of adverse effects on transformation processes, such as brewing and malting, or on the quality of their products.
In order for a chemical to be included on the list of accepted chemicals, BRi will carry out an initial assessment of factors including; chemical nature; mode of action; time of application; available test data. Following this initial assessment, BRi will conduct any further additional malting or brewing trials necessary to come to a decision. These further trials do not replace or duplicate the toxicological or efficacy testing required by the Pesticides Safety Directorate (PSD) before the chemical can be registered, but are designed to test the suitability of treated crops for processing specifically within the malting and brewing industry.
