Japan & Canada: Sapporo Breweries Ltd. announced cash offer of CA$17.50 per share for Sleeman Breweries Ltd.

Sapporo Breweries Ltd. ("Sapporo") and Sleeman Breweries Ltd. ("Sleeman") announced August 11 that Sapporo has agreed to make a fully financed offer to acquire all of the issued and outstanding common shares of Sleeman at a cash price of CA$17.50 per common share (the "Offer"). The cash consideration represents a 50% premium over the closing share price on May 11, 2006, the day prior to Sleeman's announcement of its Board's decision to initiate a review of strategic options and an 18% premium to today's closing price. The Offer represents an aggregate value for Sleeman, including assumed debt, of approximately CA$400 million.

The Board of Directors of Sleeman has unanimously determined that the Offer is fair and will recommend that Sleeman shareholders accept the Offer. In addition, BMO Capital Markets has provided an opinion that the consideration under the Offer is fair, from a financial point of view, to the shareholders of Sleeman.

John Sleeman has agreed to irrevocably tender all of his shares to the Offer. Singapore: Asia Pacific Breweries reports growth of 44% in attributable net profit (before exceptional items) for 3Q 2006

Asia Pacific Breweries (APB) announced August 11its unaudited results for the third quarter ended 30 June 2006.

PBIT at $66.7 million increased by $19.7 million or 42% over last year on the back of good volume growth in most operations. Excluding the benefit of a one-off adjustment on royalties of $17.3 million, and translation and gestation losses ($2.8 million), PBIT increased by $5.2 million or 11% over last year (figures in SGD unless stated).

Attributable profit before exceptional items rose by $9.3 million or 44% to reach $30.6 million. Excluding the one-off adjustment on royalties and gestation losses, attributable profit before exceptional items increased by $5.0 million or 24% over last year.

During the quarter, the rates of brand royalty for past years payable by our operations in Vietnam to the brand owners were agreed. This has resulted in a one-time cancellation of royalties previously charged to the operations for prior years for an amount of $27 million.

A part of this benefit ($9.7 million) relates to inter-company royalties and is accordingly eliminated on consolidation at Corporate Office level. Japan: Domestic shipments of beer rose 0.3% in 1H 2006, the first increase in a decade

Japanese beer shipments are on the rise for the first time in a decade, as the world's second-largest economy toasts a brisk recovery from years of doldrums. But the future of Japan's US$24.8 billion beer industry is uncertain, Mainichi Daily News released August 14.

Changing tastes, healthier lifestyles and Japan's shrinking population are all looming buzz kills for an industry that has already undergone painful restructuring during a recently ended decade of economic stagnation.

Struggling to keep the profits coming, Japan's big brewers - Kirin, Asahi, Sapporo and Suntory - are trying everything from diversifying into baby food to expanding into China and introducing soybean beer.

"Until now, the beer market has been shrinking because people wanted cheaper drinks," said Shuji Takimoto, spokesman for the Brewers Association of Japan. "But just judging by the changing population, the future of beer also looks tough."

The good news is that in the first half of 2006, domestic shipments of beer rose 0.3 percent, the first increase in a decade, as rising wages and consumer optimism encouraged people to dine out. Shipments of all beer products, including low-malt beer and no-malt beer, climbed 1.1 percent to 230.66 million cases, its first increase in five years.

Brazil: AmBev 2Q 2006 net income increased to R$483.3 million compared to R$305.2 million a year before

Companhia de Bebidas das Americas - AmBev, the world's fifth largest brewer and the leading brewer in Latin America, announced August 14 its results for the second quarter 2006.

AmBev's consolidated results are the sum of the three following business units:

1. Brazil: comprised of (i) Beer Brazil; (ii) CSD & Nanc (Carbonated Soft Drinks and Nanc - Non-Alcoholic, Non-Carbonated beverages); and (iii) Malt and By-Products Sales;

2. Hispanic Latin America (HILA): comprising (i) AmBev's average 59.8% economic stake in Quinsa; and (ii) HILA-ex (which corresponds to AmBev's controlled operations in Northern Latin America); and

3. North America: representing the operations of Labatt Brewing Company Limited ("Labatt").

Comparisons, unless otherwise stated, refer to the second quarter 2005 (2Q05).

According to RTTNews release of August 14, AmBev 2Q2006 net income, excluding goodwill and amortization, stood at US$0.55 per ADR, compared to US$0.39 per ADR in the same quarter last year. Including items, the earnings per ADR for the quarter was US$0.34 compared to US$0.19 in the year-ago quarter.

China: Anheuser-Busch Companies has blocked the entry of Budějovický Budvar into China

The U.S. brewing giant Anheuser-Bush appealed a decision by the Beijing Intermediate People’s Court’s, which allowed the Czech brewer to register the trademark “Budějovický Budvar” in China, where Anheuser-Busch has registered “Budweiser” and “Bud,” Czech Business Weekly posted August 11.

"We believe the Czech Brewer’s trademark registration would infringe on our world famous brands,” said Stephen J. Burrows, CEO and president of Anheuser-Busch International in an e-mail. “The Anheuser-Busch trademarks for Budweiser and Bud remain valid and unchallenged in China,” he said.

Since 1995, A-B has made “a significant investment” in the Budweiser brand in China and will continue to “aggressively protect” its trademarks from any infringement, Burrows said. China is one of the most important markets for A-B outside the United States. Budvar couldn’t be reached for comments August 11.

The dispute in China has lasted since 1997. Last month, the Chinese court ruled that Budějovický Budvar can’t be confused with Budweiser and “Bud“ trademarks, according to Budvar’s statement issued on July 12. “The court’s final ruling is an important step toward the definite registration of our trademarks. Hungary: Brau Union 1H 2006 after-tax profit double year-on-year on modest rise in sales

The Brau Union Hungaria Brewery had after-tax profit of HUF 1.416 billion in the first half of 2006, more than double profits of HUF 688.02 million in the same period a year earlier, the company said August 14, Hungarian News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge released August 14. Sales revenue rose 5.6pc to HUF 19.953 billion during the same period.

First-half operating profits increased 87pc year-on-year to HUF 1.284 billion. Financial profits totalled HUF 148 million, more than four times their level one year earlier.

In volume terms, Brau Union's sales rose 3.9pc to 1.02 million hl, including exports of 28,000 hl, giving the brewery a 30.1pc share of Hungary's beer market, slightly more than a year earlier.

Exports, largely to the parent company's Croatian and Slovakian subsidiaries, grew 238pc, but still accounted for just 1pc of total sales.

Material costs fell 1.9pc, but still exceeded HUF 10bn. However, the company saved 14pc, or more than HUF 300 million, on payroll costs.

Total assets rose 8.7pc to HUF 28.619 billion in the twelve months to June 30, 2006, and net assets increased 9.6pc to HUF 21.491 billion.

EU: Export flow of 2.2 million tons of malt to be maintained with difficulty

EU malt export restitutions for 147,000 tons were booked in July, a very low figure, which would not be sufficient to maintain the export flow of 2.2 million tons on a year basis. However, the figure must be misleading, as export business has been very good, not only for shipments in 2007, but also for the later months of this year, analyst commented August 01.

Malt markets are active, prices are firm and have probably not reached their highest levels yet. One obvious reason is the scarcity of good quality malting barley from this year's crop and the high and still rising barley price levels. Another reason is the precarious P/L situation of the whole malting industry, which is obliged to show profitable balance sheets after two years of horrendous losses.

The increase of the cost of energy and transport is a further factor. The dry and hot summer, which has damaged the barley fields, has also dried up river beds, so that the usually cheapest means of mass transport by barges has become extremely expensive on and around the Rhine, and even impossible on Elbe and Oder.

Netherlands: Bavaria N.V. to launch superlative large-scale malthouse in the new North Sea port of Eemshaven

The Dutch brewery group Bavaria N.V. with headquarters in Lieshout has been a loyal Buhler customer for over 50 years. Together, the two partners gradually increased Bavaria’s malting operation in Lieshout to its current annual output of about 150,000 metric tons of malt between the years 1971 and 1990. Today, three tower malthouses based on different process technologies stand in Lieshout. To them has been added the most recently built two-floor round kiln with a rotary kiln floor housed in a steel building, Powder and Bulk released August 14.

Bavaria has accumulated decades of practical experience operating malthouses based on different systems and sizes. This, in conjunction with the changing malt market, prompted the Bavaria management to construct a new large-scale malthouse for making export malt at a logistically strategic location. To also ensure easy supply of the necessary high-grade malting barley, Bavaria entered into a joint venture with the Dutch agricultural cooperative Agrifirm, a specialist in the field of barley growing. The site selected was the new North Sea port of Eemshaven. On the one hand, it is located near the barley growing areas, and on the other the port allows direct loading of the malt onto ships.

Germany & Austria: Malting barley yields remain around 50,000 tons in Germany, crop result is fair to good in Austria

The acreage of winter barley is in Germany apparently even larger than the first official estimate of 1.445 million ha. As analysts pointed out August 01, yields and quality are good, but the share of malting varieties remains around 50,000 tons. The harvest of spring barley started off well in the valleys of Rhine and Neckar in the Southwest, but everywhere else the crop disappointed. Low yields and poor calibration are general, in some parts, e.g. in Thuringia proteins are too high.

In Austria, the reported crop result is fair to good, yields and calibration are slightly below average, but moisture is very low and protein average.

While barley is being genetically modified for research purposes and will likely be commercialized in the near future, other GM crops such as corn and rice are in commercial production.
