Brewery News
Czech Republic: Domestic breweries raised exports by 17 percent in 1H 2006

Czech breweries raised exports by 17 percent year-on-year to 1.7 million hectolitres in the first half of the year, the Czech Beer and Malt Association said August 24, Czech News Agency Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge accordingly released.

Production for the Czech market increased too, adding 2 percent to 7.85 million hectolitres. On the whole, Czech breweries produced 9.55 million hectolitres in the period, up 4.4 percent from a year ago.

"The first-half results confirm a trend of the past few years: Czech beer production continues to grow, and exports in particular increase," said Frantisek Krakes, chairman of the Association. "Practically all Czech industrial breweries export part of their production," he added.

The share of exports in production rose to almost 18 percent from 16 percent in the first half of 2005. Germany was the largest foreign market with a share topping 40 percent, followed by Slovakia. Exports to Ukraine, Belgium, Finland, Sweden and Russia grew the fastest, while exports to the USA and Britain dropped year-on-year.

Krakes said first-half sales to the domestic market blossomed on good weather, although the climate had the biggest impact only in July, when some producers reported record sales. Another factor was an increase in the ...

Denmark: Carlsberg to lift debt by up to DKR20 billion trough right acquisition targets

Carlsberg’s chief executive signalled August 23 that the Danish brewer could lift its debt by up to DKR20 billion (£1.82 billion) if the right acquisition targets became available. Nils Andersen told The Times August 24 that although the company had no specific targets in mind, he would be “happy to invest between DKR15 billion and DKR20 billion if the right opportunities come along”.

Mr Andersen said that the issue of gearing, particularly in the context of private equity investments, had become a hot topic in Denmark. However, Carlsberg had been constrained by the DKR20 billion of debt built up from its spending spree two years ago.

In January that year Carlsberg paid more than €1 billion to acquire Holsten, the German brewer. The next month it paid DKR14.8 billion to buy out the 40 per cent stake in its Carlsberg Breweries subsidiary held by Orkla, its Norwegian partner.

Mr Andersen said that in the wake of those deals Carlsberg’s debt had lost investment grade status, but that it had now been restored.

Danish analysts reckon that Carlsberg is targeting growth markets such as Asia and Eastern Europe. However, Mr Andersen said: “We have a strong operational focus and we ...

Colombia: SABMiller's Bavaria to build US$175 million brewery

SABMiller PLC said August 24 that its Colombian subsidiary, Bavaria, plans to invest US$175 million in a new brewery in western Colombia, Dow Jones Newswires released August 24.

The construction of the brewery on the outskirts of Cali is due to be completed in late 2007. The company said it was building the brewery in order to "keep pace with growing demand in the region."

It will have an initial capacity of 3.5 million hl, increasing to 4.5 million hl by 2009. It will replace an existing 1.3 million hl facility in the center of Cali.

"This move will allow us finally to catch up with the growing demand in this part of the country," said Karl Lippert, Bavaria's president, in a statement.

"A new brewery such as this is also a great opportunity to take steps forward in production techniques, quality, ergonomics and environmental care, to the benefit of our consumers and our other stakeholders."

USA & Japan: Anheuser-Busch to assume marketing and selling responsibility for Kirin Brewery Company’s brands on the American market

Anheuser-Busch's 10-year alliance with Japanese brewer Kirin in the United States has expanded, with the American brewer assuming marketing and selling responsibility for the Kirin brands, the two companies announced August 24.

Anheuser-Busch has brewed and distributed Kirin Ichiban and Kirin Light for Kirin in the United States since 1996. The new agreement assigns Anheuser-Busch full oversight of the Kirin brands in the United States, while Kirin retains trademark responsibility for the brands.

"American consumers have a great interest in high-end Asian cuisine and culture, including Asian beer," said August A. Busch IV, president of Anheuser-Busch Inc. "We are aggressively expanding our range of high-end beers to meet the diverse needs of our consumers. The Kirin beers are of the highest quality and have enormous potential, as the Asian influence is rapidly growing. This new agreement enhances a truly global relationship between our two companies. Now, we also share a deeper commitment to each other's success."

Referring to the new agreement, Hitoshi Oshima, CEO of Kirin International, stated that "Kirin has been working with Anheuser-Busch in the U.S. market for almost ten years and we have great respect for them. Anheuser-Busch and Kirin share mutual understanding to enhance brand value through consumer focus ...

UK: Carling’s performance has been undermined by price promotions and an ill-defined positioning

Carling's value sales fell from £155 million-£160 million to £135 million-£140 million, knocking 11% off its sales in grocery stores according to the recent TNS Worldpanel 2006 Biggest Brands survey, Brand Republic posted August 23.

Although the value of beer and lager sales overall has been eroded by widespread price promotions such as multi-buys, many of the Coors Brewery-owned brand's competitors have recorded sales increases.

InBev's Stella Artois, the grocery market leader, experienced modest sales growth of 4% to £310 million-£315 million, in the year to 23 April 2006. Carling, while still top in the on-trade, where it is growing, is number two in the off-trade and is more likely to have lost customers to Scottish Courage brand Foster's, in third place, which recorded a 32% sales hike to £105 million-£110 million.

Christmas brought little joy for Carling as its reliance on price promotions proved to be its undoing, with consumers lured by brands perceived to be more premium, also being sold at a discount. In recent months, Carling says it has increased prices, while some rivals continue to discount.

Carling has a long-standing tie with football, having invested £100 million in the game over the past 15 years. Current involvement includes the ...

Canada: Well-documented management failures left breweries like Sleeman Breweries Ltd susceptible to a foreign takeover

The planned acquisition of Sleeman Breweries Ltd. by the Japanese company Sapporo Breweries Ltd., announced on Aug. 11, was widely considered a soft landing for a company that had been ailing financially and in search of a buyer since last May. Sleeman burst onto the Canadian beer scene in the late 1980s and, helped along by its unique clear bottles, became a huge success and a national brand, McLean’s released August 24.

But in recent years it struggled to find a place in the highly competitive beer industry. Now, in Sapporo, Sleeman may find an owner that wants to keep the brand around, perhaps using it as a stepping stone into the U.S. market rather than dismantling it. "This is a good news story," said company founder John Sleeman, following the announcement. "People working here should be able to go home with a lot fewer worries about their jobs."

In seeking refuge in a foreign buyer, Sleeman is following what's become a Canadian beer-makers' tradition: Labatt Brewing Co. Ltd. sold to Belgium's InBev SA in 1995, and Molson Inc., the makers of the brand "Canadian," merged with American company Adolph Coors Co. in early 2005. But if the impending sale was welcome ...

Czech Republic: 1H 2006 malt production increased 2% year-on-year

According to the Czech Beer and Malt Association statement of August 24, Czech malt houses raised output in the first half of 2006 by 2 percent year-on-year to 266,000 tonnes. More than half of the amount was sold abroad, above all to Poland, Romania, Germany, Cuba, Slovenia and Austria.

Denmark: Carlsberg-owned House of Beer recorded a profit of €1 million from selling imported beers

Carlsberg’s House of Beer had last year a profit of €1 million by selling upto 100 different imported beer-types, H. Abildstrøm & Co ApS released in its Scandinavian Malting Barley report No/09 of August 24.

It also marketed some of the Danish micro-brewery products. It presently has almost 100 Danish micro-breweries in production or nearby planned. Their expectations before the market is satiated are about 200 breweries within 5 years. By then the House of Beert will still only represent not more than 15% of the Danish beer market.

The House of Beer was founded by Carlsberg as a wholly owned import company in. It quickly became the exclusive Danish importer for many foreign beers.

Canada: CWB issued its Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2006-07 crop year

The Canadian Wheat Board (CWB) released August 24 its Pool Return Outlook (PRO) for the 2006-07 crop year. The designated barley and Pool A feed barley PROs are up $5 per tonne, feed barley export values are expected to move higher.

Global malting barley values have continued to strengthen given concerns over dryness in Australia, disappointing EU-25 harvest results and the ongoing tight supply situation in the United States. Western Canadian barley production expectations have also declined due to dry weather over the past six weeks

Towards understanding the genetic basis of adaptation to low rainfall environments

ABSTRACT
Water deficit is one of the most important constraints to cereal production in the Mediterranean-type dryland cropping environments of the world. The present project aims to identify and develop barley with improved adaptation to low rainfall environments, and to develop molecular markers for key traits associated with drought stress tolerance. While markers for these traits will find application within current breeding germplasm, this work also targets the identification of novel alleles from wild and landrace barley.

A population was developed from a cross between a Syrian landrace barley and an improved ICARDA line. The two parental lines are well adapted to low rainfall conditions, exhibit similar maturity, and also represent significant genetic diversity. In 1999/2000, this population was evaluated at two low rainfall sites in Syria and four sites in Jordan. The sites experienced significant drought stress and a number of lines out-yielded the parental lines and well adapted local varieties, and the differences in yield were not associated with maturity effects. A range of traits associated with performance under drought stress were measured including growth habit, early vigor, tiller number, leaf chlorophyll content, plant height, days to heading, biomass, kernel weight, grain yield and harvest index. A molecular map has been constructed with 247 molecular markers (73 SSR, 174 AFLP) used to genotype 94 RIL’s from this population.

Tolerance to drought stress has been a difficult trait to characterise and quantify, and our current understanding is largely based upon comparative physiology. The application of molecular genetics strategies in conjunction with physiology and field evaluation promises to deliver significant advances in both our understanding of stress tolerance, and our ability to positively select for stress tolerance in crop improvement.
