China: Tsingtao Brewery profits increased by 22.5% in 1H 2006

Tsingtao Brewery, the largest beer maker in China, posted a 22.5 percent rise in first-half earnings August 28 as surging sales in the fast-growing mainland market helped offset fierce competition, Reuters acknowledged the same day.

Tsingtao, which is 27 percent-owned by top U.S. beer maker Anheuser-Busch Cos. Inc., is relying on growth of its flagship brand to help lift prices and margins in a country where a 640 ml bottle - just over a pint - can cost only 12 U.S. cents.

China's beer market is the world's largest by volume and is growing at an annual rate of 7 percent to 10 percent as incomes rise, attracting a flood of investment from global players such as SABMiller, Heineken and Carlsberg, driving up valuations despite narrow profit margins.

Tsingtao, which has battled higher costs for power, transport and raw materials, said its net income for the six months through June 30 totalled CNY212.74 million (US$26.69 million), compared with CNY173.64 million a year earlier.

That beat a forecast for a roughly 11 percent increase in first-half earnings by consulting company KGI.

Turnover at Tsingtao rose 15.9 percent from a year earlier to CNY5.77 billion in the January to June period.

Peru: SABMiller plc announces $102 million investment in Peru

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced August 25 that its Peruvian subsidiary Backus and Johnston will invest US$102 million in infrastructural projects in Peru. The investment, which will be made by March 2007, will include the expansion of the brewhouse at its Ate facility to the east of Lima; a new brewhouse at the brewery in Motupe in northern Peru; and a significant upgrade of packaging capability across the country. The investment will also include a further $12 million expenditure on fridges, coolers and trade equipment to improve the accessibility of cold product to all Peruvians.

In addition to the investment above, Backus and Johnston has also announced a proposed merger with Cervesur, its majority owned affiliate and other affiliate companies. This nilpremium transaction will serve to simplify and streamline SABMiller’s operations in Peru into a more directly manageable and accountable holding structure.

Commenting on the new investment, Robert Priday, the president of Backus and Johnston, said: “The investments will serve to extend the production capacity in the brewery plants in Lima as well as interior of the country, which will comply with the most modern technology in brewing, fermentation and packaging processes. The investment will ensure that we ...

USA: Gambrinus’ shipments of Corona dropped 5%, rival Barton increased imports by 16%

The shortage of Corona Extra and Corona Light has created a "dire situation" where the No. 1 import is losing tens of thousands of case sales each week, said Don Mann, market group general manager for San Antonio, Texas-based Gambrinus Company, which imports and markets the Grupo Modelo brands in eastern markets, Brandweek released August 25.

The shortage has become acute during August and more so apparently in the Gambrinus markets than in the West territories served by Barton Beers, Chicago. Some large markets are saddled with zero inventory, claims Mann, and are waiting for shipments from Modelo. An upstate New York retailer reports that his stores were out of Corona Extra for 10 days before finally receiving a pallet delivery earlier this week. He also just started to receive six-packs of 7-ounce bottles after being out all summer and hasn't had any shipments of Corona Light for weeks. Various Eastern wholesalers also claim their stocks are low or depleted. The cause is a bottleneck with the production of long neck bottles, perhaps a glass shortage or a problem with the label-painting operation.

"They haven't really given us more explicit information than that," said Mann, referring to Grupo Modelo. As early as ...

Mexico: Grupo Modelo-Constellation Brands joint venture received HSR clearance to import and market in USA and Guam through 2016

Grupo Modelo, S.A. de C. V., Mexico's leading company in the brewing, distribution and sale of beer, and Constellation Brands, Inc. , a leading international producer and marketer of beverage alcohol brands, announced August 25 they have received notice from the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") that the Hart-Scott-Rodino waiting period for review of their proposed joint venture to import beer brands to the U.S. and Guam is terminated, PRNewswire released August 25.

The FTC notice signals the closing of the review by FTC and Department of Justice regulators, and lifts all constraints under the Hart-Scott-Rodino Act to establish the joint venture. The companies are proceeding with plans to form the joint venture, including satisfaction of unrelated regulatory and licensing requirements. The joint venture will become operational effective Jan. 2, 2007. On July 17, 2006, the companies announced an agreement to form the joint venture, which will import and market Grupo Modelo brands in the United States and Guam through 2016. The joint venture will conduct business as Crown Imports LLC.

Founded in 1925, Grupo Modelo is the leader in the production and marketing of beer in Mexico, with 62.8 percent of the total (domestic and export) market share, as of Dec. 31, ...

Malt News
Czech Republic: Malt production increased 2% year-on-year in 1H 2006

According to the Czech Beer and Malt Association statement of August 24, Czech malt houses raised output in the first half of 2006 by 2 percent year-on-year to 266,000 tonnes. More than half of the amount was sold abroad, above all to Poland, Romania, Germany, Cuba, Slovenia and Austria.

Barley News
World: Export perspectives for barley are comparatively favourable, forecasts rank to 5.1-5.2 million t

Barley export perspectives are quite favorable. Barley production forecasts for EU and Australia have been substantially decreased amid drought, UkrAgroConsult released in its Grain Market report of August 24.

Black Sea region could remain the biggest barley supplier in the 2006/07 MY. UkrAgroConsult forecasts increase in prices for Black Sea barley from US$115-118/t FOB in the nearest future.

The price rise allows increasing barley export forecast from 5.1 to 5.2 million t. Further demand for barley could be possibly generated by increase in corn prices in EU.

In spite of record crop in 2006 Ukrainian prices for barley remain stable. It confirms low level of farmers’ barley sales, while large export contracts were made for September – November.

UK: Barley exports sank by 29% reaching 612,054 t

Barley exports in 2005/06 MY dropped by 29% to 612,054 thousand tons, ProAgro-News released August 28. Shipments of barley to Spain, the main destination of Geat Britain’s grain exports, decreased by 8.7% down to 313,766 tons. Barley exports to Ireland quadrupled and reached 76,496 tons.

Barley shipments to non-EU countries also plunged 7.6 times to 23.417 tons. Exports to Tunis decreased 4 times down to 22,700 tons.

Hops News
USA: Hops were under less stress in USA than in Europe

The latter half of July brought with it above average temperatures on both sides of the Atlantic. In the United States, this slowed the growth of aroma hops, which are not fond of such weather. Due to the presence of drip irrigation in all alpha hop fields, alpha hop yield was not seriously affected, the International Hop Growers Convention released August 21 in its 2006 Crop Report.

In Europe, where irrigation is the exception rather than the norm, both aroma and alpha hop varieties were stressed. During July, the year 2006 was shaping up to be the worst since the draught of 2003. In both cases, the end of July and the beginning of August brought relief.

In the United States, cooler temperatures have prevailed during the month of August, easing the stress on all hop varieties. In Germany and the rest of Europe, August has brought with it above average rainfall. Hop farmers try not to be too optimistic, and indeed you can never know the crop until it is in the bale, but it appears that each passing day has brought with it a greater sense of relief as to what the crop will ...

Transformation Of Barley (Hordeum Vulgare) Using The Wheat Puroindoline Gene by Yusuke Odake

ABSTRACT
Feed and malting barley are major crops in Montana. Harrington, a two-rowed spring malting barley variety, is the most cultivated variety in the state. Barley was the last of the world’s major cereals for which transformation methods were developed because in vitro-cultured barley rapidly loses regeneration ability or gives rise to albino plants during selection for transformed tissue. Previous research used the variety Golden Promise because it regenerates well under research conditions, though it is not commercially used. Transformation could be an important method to improve varieties in North American barley cultivars. The puroindoline proteins (PINA and PINB) can be isolated from wheat endosperm and are basic cysteine and tryptophan-rich proteins that might play a role in defense against pathogens. The puroindolines show antifungal activity both in vitro and in vivo. Milk stage seeds were harvested to obtain embryos. Embryos were placed on induction media [2.5 mg/L 2,4-Dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) and 0.01 mg/L 6-benzylaminopurine (BAP)] for 12 to 51days until calli formed. The biolistic method was chosen for transmitting the gene of interest into the calli, using a Biolistic PDS-1000/He Particle Delivery System (BioRad, Hercules, CA) with 900 psi rupture disks. Approximately 4,500 calli were bombarded with two plasmids; pinA driven by the maize ubiquitin promoter (Ubi1) which is expressed constitutively, and the hygromycin phosphotransferase (hph), which confers hygromycin B resistance and is driven by the CaMV 35S promoter for selection. The bombarded calli were selected on medium containing 30 mg/L Hygromycin B for 9 to 21 days, and subcultured to intermediate medium (1.0mg/L 2,4-D and 0.5 mg/L BAP), followed by regeneration media (1.0-3.0 mg/L BAP). Thirty hygromycin B resistant calli regenerated and 5 died in magenta box. Thirty five putative transgenic plants derived from 25 calli grew in soil and were harvested. Some plants tested by polymerase chain reaction (PCR) tested positive with primers for pinA and hph. Southern blots were performed to detect the presence of hph in T1 barley genomic DNA but were negative. Northern blots performed to detect the presence of pinA and hph transcribed RNA in the T1leaf tissue were also negative, showing that no stably transformed plants were obtained.
