Brewery News
Belgium: InBev consolidated revenue increased by 8.1% in 1H 2006

InBev, the world’s leading brewer by volume, released September 06 its Unaudited Interim Report for the 6 month period ended 30 June 2006.

The consolidated revenue was 6.176 million euro, +8.1% higher (or +416 million euro) year-on-year (yoy). The implementation of revenue management initiatives across the business resulted in revenue growing above volume.

Latin America had higher revenue/Hl, due to price increases in line with inflation, together with more volumes being sold through direct distribution.

In Central & Eastern Europe, increased revenue/Hl was mainly the result of better pricing. Revenue per hl improved by +1.1 euro on an organic basis, more than offsetting an estimated negative “geography” impact of -0.4 euro/hl. This negative geography impact results when countries with lower revenue/hl grow faster than countries with higher revenue/hl.

Consolidated cost of sales (CoS) was 2.553 million euro, an organic increase of -3.6% (or -80 million euro). The CoS per hl improved by +0.51 euro organically (+2.3%), of which an estimated 0.11 euro/hl was the positive impact of the change in the geography mix previously explained.
Volume growth, higher revenue/hl, and cost control resulted in consolidated gross margin expansion of 184bp yoy.

Operating expenses were 2.226 million euro, representing an increase of -4.0% (or -79 million ...

EU: Beer tax could increase by 31% as the European Commission proposed to raise the minimum tax on alcohol

The European Commission proposed September 08 to raise the European Union's minimum tax on alcohol, which was last fixed in 1992, Easy Bourse released September 08.

Under the commission's proposal, beer and alcohol taxes in some E.U. countries could rise by as much as 31% starting in 2008. For the 10 states that joined the E.U. in 2004, tax hikes might be deferred until 2010, according to the Commission's tax spokeswoman Maria Assimakopoulou.

Under the proposal, in some countries the price of a half liter of beer at 5% alcohol by volume could rise by an average EUR0.01, the Commission said.

Ukraine: Domestic beer industry expected to increase production by 15% in 2006

Ukrainian beer production increased 2.2 times over the last 6 years. In 2006 the national beer output is expected to outperform 26 million hl of beer, 15% more year-on-year. Beer exports are forecasted to range between 2.8 and 3 million hl, The Russian Brewers Union said September 07 referring to “Ukrpivo” president, Galina Korenkova’s statement made during the press-conference dedicated to the XIII annual celebration of “Beer fest - 2006” advertising campaign.

Ukrpivo officials added that the domestic brewing industry is fairly competitive on the international market and has big potential to expand, particularly on the back of the domestic beer lovers, as Ukrainians drink on average 45-48 l of peer per year, a level which is clearly under the levels posted by Germany (120 l/year), Czech Republic (160 l/year) and the EU average of 85 l/year.

UK: Suffolk-based Green King has taken over Hardys & Hanson, the last major brewery in Nottinghamshire in a £270 million deal

Greene King bought the Kimberly firm Hardys and Hansons and more than 200 East Midlands pubs in a £270 million deal, BBc released September 05.

Hardys employed 140 people at its Kimberley plant, and 1,200 people signed a petition opposing the sale.

Senior management at Hardys and Hansons said earlier they would try to impress upon the new owners the value of the existing staff and products.

Shareholder and member of the Nottingham Campaign for Real Ale Andrew Ludlow had opposed the move. He said: "It's a very sad day. The overall result is that the company will become a part of Greene King.

"What we must now look towards is trying to persuade Greene King that the beers are maintained and the brewing is kept in Nottingham."

Hardys & Hansons plc is a pub retailer, wholesaler and integrated brewer. It operates both managed and tenanted outlets primarily in the East Midlands. The estate constitutes modern pub restaurants as well as traditional and community pubs.

Operating a sizeable estate of over 250 pubs, it sells the highest quality food and drinks, including its own locally brewed ales.

Traditional techniques and natural ingredients are used in the brewing process, combined with modern ...

China: SABMiller joint venture China Resources Snow Breweries expects sales to improve by 20% in 2006

China Resources Snow Breweries (CRSB), a joint venture in which SABMiller PLC holds a 49% share and China Resources Enterprise Ltd. owns 51%, expects sales in 2006 to increase by 20% from a year earlier, China Knowledge released September 08.

CRSB Chief Marketing Officer Hou Xiaohai told Reuters September 06 that sales in the first half rose by 30% to 3.95 hl. Sales for the upcoming fiscal year is expected to increase by 20% from the 3.9 million hl of the beer sold in China in 2005.

However, CRSB’s marketing efforts were hampered last month when the local government in Chongqing froze CRSB’s assets for allegedly giving perks totaling over RMB3.8 million to retailers in exchange for market access.

CRSB refuted allegations, claiming that it is common practice for those in the brewery industry to give a case of beer to distributors as part of marketing promotions.

CRSB holds a 13% to 14% share of China’s market, on par with market leader Tsingtao Brewery Co. Ltd., which held 13.9% of the market as at the end of June. Sales of Tsingtao rose 10.5% to 2.28 million hl in the first six months of 2006. It also plans to sell 4.4 million hl ...

USA: Anheuser-Busch sales to wholesalers are up 3.2% for the last four quarters

Results in 2006 have been encouraging and Anheuser-Busch is beginning to capitalize on opportunities for future growth, company executives told September 06 investors in a presentation given at the Prudential Consumer Conference, PRNewswire communicated September 06.

"Positive momentum has returned to the U.S. beer industry," said August Busch IV, president of Anheuser-Busch, Inc. "Industry volume has seen gains in each of the last four quarters with total industry volume up 2.7 percent year- to-date through July." Over this same period, Anheuser-Busch's sales-to-wholesalers were up 3.2 percent vs. the same period last year. Through Labor Day, Anheuser-Busch sales-to-retailers were up 1.3 percent year-to-date and up 0.5 percent (selling day adjusted) in the third quarter. The domestic beer company's healthy volume performance in 2006 has been led by its core Bud Light brand, which is up 5 percent year-to-date, and every Anheuser-Busch brand family has shown positive or improving trends so far this year.

"Going forward, we expect volume growth to continue, but at a more moderate rate due to challenging comparisons for the industry and A-B in the second half of 2006," said Busch. "However, the pricing environment in the U.S. beer industry continues to be favorable."

The domestic beer company's revenue per barrel(1) ...

Malt News
EU: Malt prices stood at €/t 320.00 FOB seaport

Malt business has been reported at price levels from the €280's early in the month to €320.00, FOB seaport, in bulk, at the end of August, experts commented September 01.

Present calculations of 2row spring barley malt are based on an average cost of barley for the season of €175.00/180.00 delivered malthouse. The malting margin approaches €90.00 per t, which includes the additional risks of raw material, energy and transport prices. That translates into a malt price of €310.00/315.00 per t EXW. Esterel malt costs €25.00 less.

Barley News
USA: Scientists discovered heat tolerant barley enzymes which result in more fermentable product for brewing beer

US scientists have discovered heat tolerant barley enzymes, which could make malting more efficient for beer, Food Navigator said September 09.

The three new barley enzymes can yield up to 30 percent more sugar than enzymes found in conventional barley lines, said the scientists from the US Department of Agriculture's Agricultural Research Service (USDA ARS).

The enzymes are said to perform exceptionally well at temperatures of 70 degrees Celsius, or 160 degrees Fahrenheit, and because they produce more sugar, they result in more fermentable product for brewing beer.

Before brewing can begin, barley kernels must be 'malted', explained the ARS. Malting begins with steeping the kernels in water until the seeds begin to sprout, or germinate. This process helps cue production of enzymes that are crucial for turning starch into sugar. In nature, the young seed needs this sugar for energy to grow. In malting, brewers need it for fermentation.

But this manipulated growth spurt must be carefully controlled. About the time rootlets can be seen sprouting from the seeds, the kernels are blown dry in a 120 degrees Fahrenheit kiln to halt any further maturing in the seed. Soon after, the barley kernels are thrust into the heat again, where ...

EU: Barley crop estimated at 55.2 million t, barley crop figures by country still speculative

Harvest has finished in the southern half of the EU, but barley crop figures from most countries are still speculative, analysts reported September 01.

In Spain there is a sharp contrast between the Ministry's figure of 8.2 million t and trade figures of 7.0 – 7.5 million t. French figures stabilized at 7.5 million t of winter and 2.9 million t of spring barley vs. 7.1 and 3.2 million t last year. The IGC estimates the EU barley crop at 55.2 million t vs. 53.1 million t in 2005, but it seems quite possible that the final figure will not be higher than last year's crop.

Wheat and maize crops will be smaller than last year, high prices of feed wheat and maize have made feed barley an attractive feeder, usage is expected up by 3 - 4 million t. Prices are firm, feed barley, July, FOB Creil, costs €111.00, delivered Rouen €116.00, October/December, delivered Northwest Germany €126.00, and delivered Holland 130.00. For comparison, in surplus years prices stay close the intervention price of €101.31.

Hops News
World: Hop farmers try not to be too optimistic

August 21, 2006 Crop Report
By Douglas MacKinnon

The latter half of July brought
with it above average temperatures on both sides of the Atlantic. In the United States, this slowed the growth of aroma hops, which are not fond of such weather. Due to the presence of drip irrigation in all alpha hop fields, alpha hop yield was not seriously affected. In Europe, where irrigation is the exception rather than the norm, both aroma and alpha hop varieties were stressed. During July, the year 2006 was shaping up to be the worst since the draught of 2003.

In both cases, the end of July and the beginning of August brought relief. In the United States, cooler temperatures have prevailed during the month of August, easing the stress on all hop varieties. In Germany and the rest of Europe, August has brought with it above average rainfall.

Hop farmers try not to be too optimistic, and indeed you can never know the crop until it is in the bale, but it appears that each passing day has brought with it a greater sense of relief as to what the crop will bring. Plants on both sides ... More Info

Quality Risks Associated with the Utilization of Fusarium Head Blight Infected Malting Barley P. B. Schwarz and R. D. Horsley, Department of Plant Sciences, North Dakota State University, Fargo 58015; B. J. Steffenson and B. Salas, Department of Plant Pathology, University of Minnesota, St. Paul 55108; and J. M. ABSTRACT
Fusarium head blight (FHB) has adversely affected the quality of bar-ley grown in the northern Great Plains of the United States and the east-ern Prairie Provinces of Canada since 1993. Objectives of this study were to document the occurrence of deoxynivalenol (DON) on barley within North Dakota and Minnesota, investigate relationships among FHB, DON, and malt quality, and to determine at what level FHB/DON-con-taminated barley can be safely utilized for the production of quality malt. Since 1993, mean DON levels have ranged from 10.3 to 0.4 µg/g, with a corresponding 81 to 32% of the regional barley crop in excess of 0.5 µg/g. Strong relationships were not observed between either kernel size or kernel weight and DON. As a consequence, cleaning is unlikely to achieve significant reductions in DON levels in most cases. In terms of barley and malt quality, the strongest relationships were observed be-tween barley DON and malt DON and malt DON and wort color. How-ever, malt DON levels could not be reliably predicted from barley at <1.0 µg/g. Barley with a DON level of <1.0 µg/g produced acceptable malt.
