Turkey: Anadolu Efes closed and signed a 3 year term US$500 million loan facility

Anadolu Efes Biracilik ve Malt Sanayii A.S. (“Anadolu Efes”) and its 70% subsidiary Efes Breweries International N.V. (“EBI”), have successfully closed and signed September 14 a 3 year term US$500 million Term Loan Facility (the “Facility”), for which Citibank, N.A. (“Citibank”) and HSBC Bank plc (“HSBC”) (the “Mandated Lead Arrangers” and “Bookrunners”) have been jointly mandated to arrange, the company released September 14. The Facility will be used for general corporate purposes including the refinancing of existing indebtedness.

The Facility was well supported by the Group’s relationship banks and resulted in the transaction being 2.5 times over-subscribed. The Facility was not increased from its original launch level of US$500m.

“We are happy to have completed the process for the syndicated loan that has been arranged jointly by HSBC and Citibank. This facility is also an important one, since it represents a debut for Anadolu Efes” commented Ahmet Boyacıoglu, President of Efes Beer Group. “We are also delighted to see the significant interest from the banking sector to this Facility, which will contribute significantly to the growth of Efes Beer Group, especially in the international markets.”

Japan &Russia: Japanese breweries increase exports to Russia to meet increasing demand

The big Japanese brewers are expanding their business in Russia to meet growing demand as more young Russians choose beer over vodka, officials of these companies say, Beverage World released September 14.

Sapporo Breweries said it had started exporting 2,250 cases per month of its Yebisu brand through a trading firm in the eastern Russian port of Vladivostok.

"More and more people are choosing beer over vodka in Russia. We would like to develop our business actively in Russia, whose economy is growing," said Katsuhito Ogawa, a spokesman for Sapporo.

Sapporo, which entered the Russian market in 1996, aims to increase its sales of beer there to 22,000 cases this year, 40 percent more than last year.

Kirin Brewery Co Ltd said it had become the first big Japanese company to make beer inside Russia, with shipments due to start this month.

"It will bring benefits to Russian consumers in terms of prices and quality," said Kirin spokesman Yoshiki Yamashita.

Asahi Breweries Ltd said it had begun exporting to Russia its Prime Time brand. It said it hoped to expand exports to Russia.

In 2004, Russia was tied with Brazil as the world's fourth largest consumer of beer, guzzling down 8.45 million kiloliters, according to the results ...

Colombia: SABMiller introduces Nastro Azzurro to Colombian beer drinkers

SABMiller plc, one of the world’s leading brewers, announced September 14 the introduction of its premium Peroni Nastro Azzurro brand into South America for the first time. The brand will be launched in Colombia becoming the company’s first foreign imported beer into the region.

Peroni Nastro Azzurro will initially be made available in high-end on-trade premises in Bogotá and Medellin, with seasonal availability in Cartagena. The launch will be supported by an integrated marketing campaign including above and below the line activity embodying Peroni Nastro Azzurro’s unique Italian style.

This introduction continues SABMiller’s global expansion of Peroni Nastro Azzurro and will mean the brand is now represented in appropriate outlets in all SABMiller regional markets. It also highlights the move by Bavaria, a subsidiary of SABMiller plc, to develop the premium segment of the beer market in Colombia alongside existing local brand Club Colombia - driving not only growth in mix, but volume growth in the key value end of the beer category.

Buoyant trading conditions were experienced across the region during the past quarter with sales increasing 7.5% against the comparable period last year. This growth was underpinned by improving economic conditions, increased brand and trade investments as well ...

Malt News
France: Lesaffre Group sold its shares in International Malting Company to Archer Daniels Midland

Lesaffre Group has sold its shares in IMC - International Malting Company, to their partners ADM - Archer Daniels Midland, analysts reported September 01. The malting group with factories in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand has a total capacity of 800,000 t. The Lesaffre Group, after having closed its French malthouse at Lille, is now withdrawing completely from the malt business and will concentrate on its core business - yeast. The disappearance of Lesaffre from the malt sector is, of course, a consequence of the lack of profitability of the industry since a number of years.

Lesaffre is today one of the world leaders in the production of yeast and yeast extracts. The business activities of the Lesaffre Group have developed essentially around the culture of yeast and the experience gained in fermentation technology.

Archer Daniels Midland Company (ADM) is a world leader in agricultural processing and fermentation technology. In addition, ADM produces value-added food and feed ingredients. Headquartered in Decatur, Illinois, ADM has over 26,000 employees, more than 240 processing plants and net sales for the fiscal year ended June 30, 2006 of US$36.6 billion.

Barley News
China: 2006 barley imports expected to reach 2.4 million t despite limited supplies

Chinese barley imports in July were 122,000 t, in January/July 1.404 million t, of which 1.035 million t from Australia and 354,000 t from Canada. It still looks like total imports in 2006 will reach 2.4 million t, although international malting barley markets have risen to record high levels and supplies are limited, analyst estimated September 01.

CIF offers to China are called US $ 230.- to 240.-. Private estimates of the Chinese malting barley crop show figures around 2.5 million t, which would leave import needs of only 1.5 million t. However, theory and practice have never been the same in the Chinese malt market.

EU: Barley crop estimated to drop by 0.6 million t

Strategie Grains published September 15 their latest estimates, continuing to revise lower the EU grain crops, the Home-Grown Cereals Authority accordingly released.

EU barley output is now predicted at 54.5 million t, down by 0.6 million t from August estimates but still 1.3 million t higher than last season. Those figures have been continually revised down since the beginning of the season due to the unfavourable conditions observed this year over Europe.

USA: Prices for Aroma hops worldwide to remain stable at high levels

Weekly American Crop Report
By: Douglas MacKinnon

The Aroma harvest has ended in the
United States and only bitter hops remain. Harvest typically continues through the end of September in Washington State but many growers in Oregon have already finished. It is impossible at the moment to predict the outcome of the American alpha crop. At this time, it appears that it will be average or better, but that can change. Aroma hop yields are down by 15 percent in some varieties. We can therefore expect prices for Aroma hops worldwide to remain stable at high levels. The American microbrewery industry demand is increasing. Therefore, additional acreage of aroma hops will likely be necessary in America in 2007 to maintain balance between supply and demand. Aroma hops in America are typically not grown on speculation. Growers will likely plant additional acreage only if it is contracted.

A serious concern of growers in Washington State is the labor shortage. Some farms are running with only 85% of their normal work force and that is making harvest difficult. The minimum hourly wage, which increases in Washington and Oregon States with the rate of inflation, is ... More Info
